So the latest dev blog says they're phasing out premium. Does this mean we get a premium Linux client now? Please add 16x9 support while you're at it ;) |

Whew. And here I was thinking that I had missed a spot in the blog post, what with the title implying "phasing out [classic and Linux]"
I don't use the Linux client but it's a pretty good selling point when I can say, "If you have a system made in the last 7 years, it will run. Yes, even on Linux."

I hope so. I want this **** that everyone calls Windows off my pc. Hopefully one day Linux will be the OS that everyone uses. Then again, that would probably put me out of a job.

The reason there is no Premium linux/mac client is because the cedega wrapper doesn't support shader model 3.0 yet. Since premium lite will use shader model 2.0, it will run just fine on linux. |

Laptops built last year can't do SM3 so the SM2 discontinuance is a bad idea, probably a game killer, however they may well rethink that part of it, at least I hope they do.
However it is likely in 6-9 months they'll see a drop off in alt accounts, you can't run as many premium accounts at the same time as you can classic due to resource constraints. So folks will probably ditch alts. I suppose they've thought of that but not sure, it could be they think they'll get enough new subscribers to make up for it.
Makes me think of the NGE.... |

Couldn't they just ditch Mac & Linus support instead to free up resources? Wouldn't that be a much lower potential loss of player base?

Check the sticky at the top of the page…
That said, I'd personally rather see SM2 to continue since that would mean that I could keep using my skill-change-and-trade monitoring laptop to… well, change skills and monitor my trade.
Oh, and for the "upgrade" crowd: it's a 2008 laptop — it's just not built for gaming.

No it wouldn't, since those resources would just go to another company. It would also mean missing the Linux/Mac bandwagon, and lose future clients. They'd cater to a shrinking group of people (SM2-only players) at the cost of a growing group (Linux/Mac gamers). ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Actually, it was because a significant proportion of the player base were interested in Mac and Linux clients that CCP decided to give it a shot. Since most of the work was outsourced to TransGaming, I'm not sure how many CCP resources would be freed up by such a move.
In any case, general opinion seems to be that Wine continues to outperform the Cedega-wrapped client in most cases, and supports SM3 (given a compatible video card) already (albeit without shadows).

The problem will be, how much OpenGL supports. I haven't been able to get the premium version of EVE working in Linux, although (I have the classic version working) because OpenGL doesn't support all of the features required of it.

What? They're phasing out SM1 and making SM2 the minimum requirement. You won't be forced to use Premium, only Premium Lite which is a less intensive version of the Premium client that should run on a lot of computers, or perform suitable well for running multiple accounts.
Edit: Oh, and as for the actual topic..
Hmm, it's hard to say. They have just announced that they have a proper Premium version in beta for the Mac, so they might have one for Linux at some point. I would expect they will make sure Premium Lite runs on Linux regardless so it should probably be ok. People need to read the dev blogs before going insane. |
