Imagine this, instead of starting an eve client to play eve, you turn off your computer, and restart it in a custom EVE OS. The OS would be a hyperadvanced version of the client with support for easily creating apps like Evemon for it. The existing client would be built into the OS, so you could, basically, be playing eve from the desktop. just an idea though, I would pay for an advanced, upgradable, customizable version of the eve client to run as its own OS. |

CCP would have to write drivers for all kind of graphic cards, sound cards, network cards, chipsets, CD/DVD/BD drives etc. Lot's of work already done by underlying system.
You can make EVE as shell in Windows and after logging in you will istantly get login screen. Even better, closing EVE will close the system. Now, after disabling all unused system services you can get EVE plus some drivers and memory menagement. It's as close as you can get now. |

LOL
Btw i don't think is a completely bad idea, it could be interesting for sure, just thinking about some nice adds that could be introduced, but i seriously think that it will never happen (luckly maybe). |

In other words, imagine if instead of running within an operating system, you launched a video game directly as the only operating program running on the system at the time, like every game used to run? :) |

Someone has to say it:
You really want an OS that's based on the UI of EVE? |

Must have missed the memo where they declared the EVE UI as "working" and "good design"
Not that i ever saw a problem with it, but it's been the number 1 gripe of UI people around the world. |

Graphic Card Yes, Sound Card Yes, Network Cards Obviously, Chipset Maybe, Depends on what the Chipset brings to the table, CD/DVD/BD Drive WHY? You don't use them in Eve. this would be an OS for playing Eve. If you want an Every Day OS use Windows, or Mac or Linux. This OS would Cut down on the Crap in the background and Allow you to use more of your hardware to play Eve. Less System based Lag and Higher Frame rates. |

i bought the new EveOS but as i left the supermarket a car came screeching out of the carpark, smashed my trolly over and it's contents all over the floor, before swerving wildly into a brick wall instantly killing the driver.
a few moments later, family members of the now-dead car driver came running out of the doorway of the supermarket where they'd been hiding and grabbed all my shopping off the floor.
they ran of shouting "LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!! PWND NOOOOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Edited by: Atnal on 16/01/2009 13:32:05 An EVE OS does seem like a good idea but it won't work in the long run.
Just customize windows to instead of opening explorer.exe have it open the eve client instead. You could customize a windows/eve client profile just specifically for the eve online client. It'll take a bit of work of course.

In other news, as eve is set in the future I'd like to know what OS they are running... Windows Space?
and going on from that is it possible to convert the ingame ship OS to current day computers thus making use of the puturistic probramming?

Years ago when I was working in a little retail computer store a guy brought in a PC to get it worked on. I'm not a programmer, so I have no clue how exactly he did it, but he someone hacked around with the Windows 98 kernal and made his system boot straight into Quake 3. Made it so the only thing that was running was drivers and Quake. Was really cool and made a dramatic difference in performance for the type of PC he had.

Not that hard actually. I have a Windows account, that launches the Amiga workbench instead of the standard desktop when you log on.

Windows installed - Check LiteStep desktop manager - Check (Get there) EVE Theme - Check! (Get there)
This is my current environment on my windows boot: EVE Theme I change background from times to times with snapshot I take while playing.
LiteStep replaces the uses for Explorer as a window manager (does not uninstall Explorer, you can still use it), takes less ressources, overall faster than explorer as an interface.
Lots of modules, skin/themes as much as you like.
Just my two cents. Have fun! :)
