I've created a page on EVE's official wiki describing how to install EVE with wine. It is here. If I made a mistake or left something out, please edit it in |

Few comments: 1) Does new player still need to add some registry options (OffScreenRenderingMode, VideoMemorySize, DirectDrawRenderer)? 2) Setting virtual desktop to on globally is bad idea since only eve needs that workaround. Such option should be described in eve launcher. 3) I didn't set overrides, but proprietary d3dx9_35 works perfectly for me. Is this step necessary for installation from scratch? 4) One doesn't need to set proper virtual desktop resolution as any fullscreen application forces its own anyway.

1) Last time I installed eve (about 2 weeks ago) I didn't need to touch the registry. 2) k. 3) I'm not sure. 4) The first time EVE launches it will take the resolution of the virtual desktop. It will force the resolution every time after that though. You can make the resolution go higher, but you can't make it go lower. So, I went with 800x600.

Good idea Aurix. I'll see if I can contribute anything worthwhile when I sober up. Regarding things like the registry tweaks, I always use them but if they're not needed perhaps that info could be included as optional.

Quote: Configuring wine to work with EVE
Open winecfg (usually found in Applications > Wine > Configure Wine), click on the graphics tab, and click "emulate a virtual desktop". You will need to download d3dx9_35 and place it in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32. Once that is done, open winecfg again and click the libraries tab. Find d3dx9_35 in the drop down list and add it. Click on d3dx9_35 in the existing overrides window and click edit, then click "Native then builtin".
That bit in the wiki regarding the d3dx9_35 file...I've NEVER needed to do that and EVE has worked fine. Just curious but why is that necessary?
Quote: You will also need to install arial.ttf. To do this, install the package "msttcorefonts". After the package is installed, move /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/arial.ttf to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts.
I do NOT recommend that as a solution. Creating a symlink of the folder "fonts" and replacing the default "fonts" directory with it in the .wine folder works as well, OR just COPY the arial file over. Many of us use the arial font for other things, and if you move it out of the true type directory this can cause problems for other applications.
Under the multiple clients section, you also will probably want to add (for clarity) that the user CAN change the windowed resolution to whatever suits them. 800x600 is awfully small and 'under' the minimum recommended rez for running EVE anyway.
My thoughts.
Good stuff setting that page up....should save us time and effort over ludicrously difficult and fruitless forum searches. bravo!
UPDATE-- I added a talk point with the above suggestions as well.

d3dx9_35 stub has been added to wine recently, so probably it's a necessary step - i didn't reinstall eve after that though.

It isn't necessary for classic, but people have said it is necessary for premium over in wine's appdb. I haven't tested it myself.

Oops, I meant to say copy.

Just fyi, but I've never run the classic 'windows' client under wine. its always been premium, and ahh say, ahhhh say agin' sir, I've never ever EVER had to install an "ms" or non wine ".dll" to get EVE working.
Just fyi.

Edited by: Kadesh Priestess on 18/01/2009 10:55:57 Recently CCP changed the way game handles installation of dx lib - previously game checked each startup and ran redist if dll was missing, now it's installed only during game installation. Probably installer checks for that dll, finds that it's in place and decides to not install it. So obviously if you had all necessary in place you didn't have to follow mentioned steps. Reinstalling game from scratch into clean .wine directory may require them.

Edited by: Igus on 18/01/2009 15:45:43 I am not sure exactly which ATI Radion cards this applies to, but under the Graphics tab in winecfg you need to change "Vertex Shader Support:" from "Hardware" to "None".
For me the ATI Radion HD 4850 requires this or the ships will not be drawn at all or correctly.
Also if you want to change the resolution in game the "Vertex Shader Support:" must be set to hardware or the game will freeze when it changes the resolution.

That option makes client to disable premium graphics content - you can do that manually. |

It misses some information on the wiki.
e.g. that turning of managed mode in wine prevents the clients from crashing when alt-tabbing. Signature removed. Please do not imply profanity in your signature. Navigator

OP - good idea.
I re-installed my machine when 8.04 came out (had Ubuntu already - but wanted to get rid of long unused windows partition :-) ).
I didn't re-install EVE - just moved the folder from backup so dunno what is required during during setup.
But besides installing mstcorefonts (and changing the usual 3D wine reg settings) I don't remember having to provide any DLLs at that time (DX DLL was needed before when I first switched to Linux). AFAIR no original windows DLLs are needed anymore. Running classic. Premium works - but at only about 10% of my classic FPS. Perhapps I would get decent FPS with Windows DLL - but never bothered to find out. --- Save the forum: Think before you post. ISK BUYER = LOSER EVE TV- Bring it back! Recently we (the guys from eve-ru.com forums) found out that latest wine from git with reverted commit (0dc0444c14c34cf90aba8b8a1af401571c959ccd) not only fixes selection size, but also eliminates random 'texture penetration' :P (when random images from video memory randomly replace some effects (like glowing on minmatar stargates) after couple of hours of gameplay) |

Since most Linux newbies goes massively to ubuntu, I would like to add some .deb file association and builds explanation.
I am a Debian/Gentoo nutshell so I could help a little.
