I have noticed time and time again that people in this forum often misspell the word lose as 'loose'. I can see that there may be a phonetic reason but it really isn't that hard to spell.
Lose and loose are two different words and have two different meanings. I also appreciate that not everyone speaks english as their first language but I have just finished reading this thread by a guy who speaks english perfectly yet seems incapable of spelling lose properly.
Has anyone else noticed this or do I need to get out more/seek counselling/go back to WoW?

If it's any worse than how you compose sentences when sober then, yeah, that must be bad. |

why do people think that spelling is sooo important? I tend to spell things incorrectly, why? becuase im typing on an internet spaceship game that i pay for to have fun, and yes i tend to see the mistake and just not bother to correct it, becuase im not at work getting paid for it, im at home (or work) paying to play it, so ill type how ever i damn please :) |

there are lots of things which many people on this forum have great difficulty with. 'ammar' 'quamtam' 'wierd' 'payed' 'replys'
best one was of course, people calling faction ships 'fraction' ships. that was TEH BEST. now however, it appears t3 is actually going to give rise to fraction ships, which is gonna cause no ends of spelling confusion and much hilarity...... possibly =| |

Saddest excuse for being a moron who cannot spell the most basic english words I have ever came across. I wasn't talking about in game at any rate. We all make spelling mistakes there as time factors are an issue. My point is that in a forum, where you have time to construct your thoughts and sentences, some people are incapable of spelling the most basic words. 'I pay to be an idiot' is a pretty lame excuse. |

This is the attitude that really grates. What you're saying is, in a text only medium you can't be bothered to make sure what you have to say is spelt correctly and is readable.
Maybe it's the equivelant to those people that mumble, shout when there's no reason to do so, or talk really fast in conversation. Your ideas, views and opinions may have gravitas, but if people need to decipher them in order to comprehend what it is you're trying to get across then you're just relying on the good will of other people, and that's rarely a good idea.
You're not being paid to write on this forum, neither are people being paid to try to understand the ravings of rude people who can't be bothered to use the delete button. |

The general lack of English skills among native English speakers has always frustrated me, but at the same time, not everyone is an aspiring author or an English major. There isn't a requirement that you pass a certain literacy or grammar test to play EVE or utilize the internet anymore than there is to use another tool. You should be able to be a longshoreman with poor communication skills (not that all longshoreman speak poorly - just an example) and still be able to play EVE or use the internet.
As basic as I feel proper English and grammar skills to be, I can't expect everyone to excel at them the same way someone who has grown up reading and writing their entire life as a passion. Likewise, many such people would probably look at my skillsets in other obvious areas of life and think I'm stupid, because I've never changed a spark plug or changed my own oil or any other number of things that I could surely do if I invested the time. Figuring things out is what an engineer does, but that doesn't mean we know everything before we decide we need to know them.
Anyway, I can't expect everyone to have the same skillsets and knowledge as I do. It is really sad when you have people that are at the level of text messaging. When they infuse normal communication with almost unreadable "ne1 no how2 c ur name?", it makes me want to rage just a little bit... but I'm not going to pick on some guy (unless he deserves it for other reasons) because he confuses "your/you're" and "their/they're/there" or overuses commas or doesn't understand how to use the oxford and serial commas or doesn't know how to use "an versus a".
You also have to consider the huge number of players in EVE for whom English is not a first language. I work with engineers all over the planet and many can write as if English was their native language, yet still have a small handful of common quirks to give it away. Nothing wrong with that (I can't write much in other languages at all, so there!).
Similarly, I don't expect everyone on the internet to know how to install a hard drive or other seemingly obvious things that I began my career with two decades ago, when I was twelve years old. That doesn't make them stupid. That makes basic technology skills foreign to them. It has probably never been a priority for them. And that's okay. |

Why is it that people with poor spelling and grammar always excuse it by saying "I know how to spell and write, but I choose not to because I'm just on the internet and it's not like I'm doing something important!"
There's a major problem with that common and predictable excuse -- it is more difficult to write poorly than it is to write properly, unless you don't know how to do it properly. If you don't, that's fine. Just say that it's not something you are excellent at and leave it at that. But don't try and snow us.
I can't turn it on and off. If I were to write poorly, it would take greater effort and more time, because it doesn't come naturally. I'd have to think about each 'mistake' I perform. It would be intentional, because writing poorly if you have the knowledge is not a natural thing. It's the reason a lot of people write out full sentences when texting on a phone. It is faster for your brain to do things the common, normal, right way than it is to constantly stop and substitute 'ne1' for 'anyone'. You might save three letters, but it'll consume more time and effort since instinctively, your fingers would flick over the correct ones that they and your brain have been trained for.
There's nothing wrong with English not being a person's forte. As long as they can get their point across, it should be good enough for most people. At least outside of a professional setting involving it (and how great do your English skills need to be if you stack sacks of dogfood in the pet aisle at the store or something?). But if that's the case, just say so. Nobody buys the "I know how to do it, but I don't need to worry about it when I'm on teh intarwebs because they aren't important!" explanation that every single person gives. --

Because english sometimes plain sux if you are not born speaking it.
lose -loose where - were witch - which your - you're their - there
etc.
All sound the same, in your head when you try to construct a sentence. At least for Dutch me that counts.
But then you have the SMS/MSN idiots, who can't be assed to write proper english, but should be able to, make things not easy on the non-native english speaking person.
You get lazy yourself.
