The real reason people run missions is because its the only thing you can do cost effectively with a multi billion isk pimpmobile. With out some sort of no/almost no risk activity we would never see anything more expensive than a standard t2 fit.

Just because you are afraid to PvP in faction gear doesn't mean people don't.

Its not just the isk, LP and faction standings that are the benefit, but what these mean.
Increased isk and faction standings mean you can anchor POS in high sec, good to do invention, manufacturing, etc. Increased LP is a good way to buy items from the LP store and resell on the market (I worked out that the Caldari Navy Iridium Projectiles would get a 13 mill isk benefit for basically no work at all - it takes about as much time to purchase from the LP store and resell on the market as it does to buy anything else......
Now, who is going to throw away 13 mill isk for such little work.....
I'm sure others could tell you what other things you can do with corps with increased faction standings but I'm just a little noob here.... Regards,

...Train hard, save iskies...alot of iskies then go into pvp full on with good skills and a phat wallet, thats the plan for me and I bet for alot of other people. it just makes me feelsobad beingout of my +5 implants whenI spent solong training cybernetics...
Ahahaha, player skill > character skill.. All your skillpoints wont save you when u dont know how to fly your ship well in combat and go up against a smaller ship who knows what he's doing. Also, you will not be 'saved' from a lot of deaths, your losses will just be all the more expensive, forcing you to run more missions to get isk to fit your ships. In the end you'll end up bitter and frustrated and soon join the 'whine about hisec ganking' crowd, amirite? (That or the 'antipirate' blob people)

My dad play those windows card-games (hearts? solitaire?) to relax while having coffee. I got friends that uses missions for the same thing in EVE. Rather than watching TV or reading the newspaper.
