Edited by: Bomberlocks on 19/01/2009 08:09:53 Eve will probably end when someone else builds a space based MMO that attracts enough current players from Eve to make it non-viable. Given the level of difficulty in creating a game as complex as Eve, I don't think this will happen in the near future or that any current competitors have much chance. That new twitch based MMO, Jumpgate Evolution looks to be interesting, as it has some features that are simply not possible in Eve, but lacks others that interest the average Eve player.
A true competitor to Eve would need the complexity to interest all those players who love the minutiae of Eve's technical details, as well as the rich back story. This is not too mention that whoever built an Eve competitor would need to build a graphics engine at least as good as Eve's. I suppose there is room for someone to build a space based MMO based on real physics (orbital mechanics, space ships don't stop when they run out of fuel, no gun sounds in space etc and I'm sure it would attract just as many as Eve would - mostly those who would like a real space simulator kind of game, although presenting all that to an average gamer without the huge time spans of black nothingness being as boring as mining is in Eve would certainly present some significant challenges!)
Eve could also, of course, end if CCP were to face sufficient financial difficulties due to some unforeseen reason that operations would no longer be possible. I don't see this happening any time soon though, as CCP seems to have enough money to spend on advertising on the front pages of major news websites etc, so I think Eve will be around for many a year yet.
Edit: As the above poster pointed out, it could of course happen that CCP could get bought out by a major gaming company who would then, in all likelihood go on to nerf the game, **** all the players off, and thereby end Eve.

The problem with a competitor taking away eve and killing it is it has a very loyal fanbase (50 mil sp )

The end of eve will happen like this.
Either a nuclear Power nation's leader will loose a billion isk ship and nuke the servers, or a religous extremist will try to bomb the servers due to the big bang theory.

Narragansett need not attain what Narragansett already has. The divine and immortal Narragansett will guide his followers though life on the afterserver. You would be wise to join, mortal.
Chribba et al will fade to dust, their pods will crack, their ships will rust. Narragansett will remain.

hopefully CCP will give the game to the fans when they are finished with it. and yes this is realistic, sorta. games like freeallegiance had done it. and a couple others i cant remember... problem is i suppose, eve needs massive servers, which no fan would have. (well actually i bet some of us are nerdy enough we do :P)
to be honest. in 10 years, i bet a home PC could host ALL of eve. so, maybe

One game that could of course compete with Eve would be a MMO based on Homeworld, the granddaddy of 3D space based RPGs. There are consistent rumours of a Homeworld 3 in the works and I presume it would be more attractive to new players as it never had the extremely long waiting times that Eve has and definitely had a much more intuitive interface.
However, even if THQ and relic do release a MMO version of Homeworld 3 and it becomes very popular, it will only serve to give CCP some competition, which is never a bad thing, as that keeps them on the ball.

EVE will end when Chribba, the great Veld God, dies and there is no longer enough Veld that had been granted by Chribba's great generosity to fuel game industry mechanics (which will never happen).

Eh maybe, right now this is the first MMO I've seen thats gained popularity over its lifetime. Usually most peeps get bored after the first 6 months and start dropping out. Now granted my experience with MMO's is only this one and 3 others (Earth and Beyond, Star Wars Galaxies and Tabula Rasa(hate to see this one die)) Eve is the only the 2nd MMO where I've bought and maintaining a 2nd account.

Eve will end 13 July 2017 when London is overwhelmed by zombies. Around 12:47 on that fateful Thursday, one of the zombies will wonder into a transformer station and fry itself on a main trunk junction thereby knocking the 14C grid offline.
Ironically World of Darkness will run for another 14 days before the zombie appocalypse reaches its server farm in Atlanta. Thus proving once and for all that Zombies > Vampires.
Since Iceland has been zombie proofed, many an Eve dev will dig out their old copies of Elite and wait for the rest of the world to become habitable again.
7 June 2023 the vikings will sail again... southeast.
Now stop asking silly questions and get back to bugging people in Jita.
Who else besides me actually verified July 17th in the year 2017 lands on a Thursday? |
