Just curious. Dust implications?
Does this mean there will be a port or DUST will be a PS4 exclusive? EVE shall be purged by fire - please Gods let them ALL burn in Jita. |

And this has been talked so many times. CCP can just port Dust to PS4 and you download that for free just as for PS3. New to EVE? Don't forget to read: The Manual * The Wiki * The Career Options * and everything else |

Not necessarily. If they have high detail models in Maya/3DS/Whatever they can export them with high details. If you watch the trailer from the fanfest you can see those high details. If it makes sense to do so for a game that is watched from 4m away is a different question.
But why do you care? It's a console FPS and as such pointless to start with.

Rumor has it that the Orbis (PS4) wont be backwards compatible anyways so you wont be able to play Dust on it since its a PS3 game, so unless CCP make a new Dust with a new engine to up the graphics and the rumor is true. pointless discussion. |

You're misunderstanding game development. Today's consoles are far more similar to a classic PC than they were back in the days (e.g. NES/SNES). Once the PS4 is out, all they have to do is switch some toggles, do some minor adjustments (in case stuff changes or they did some things in a non-portable way) and they're ready to go. Ever wondered how games like Skyrim are released on PC, Xbox360 and PS3? No, they don't develop three different games looking the same and playing the same. They're the same game ported to the other platform(s). Depending on your base (e.g. the engine) this can be as much as just switching a toggle or doing some more adjustments (as mentioned above).
So far: Don't worry, especially considering the game is going to be completely free to play. They'd be dumb hyping a game with such potential and then dropping it after only 1 or 2 years with no replacement just due to a new console.
Also, lacking backwards compatibility is something not really new to console stuff either. It's been the standard back in the days when consoles used cartridges, with some exceptions due to special adapters being released (e.g. Nintendo's Super GameBoy for the SNES). I took it to mean that they were to easily upgrade the graphics to PS4 without creating a new engine for it. Which is stupid.. Porting is another thing.
Alright and I will implement my sarcasm.
CCP - "Lets make a console game, on a console that will last only about 4-6 years that only has a couple years left on its life span, and lets make it interact with our 9 year old game in a gameplay changing way.
Then, when the next console comes out, we say, 'damn... didn't see that coming'."
So I conclude with hurf a durf a dur. Doesn't take much logic to understand that the game will be upgraded to PS4 standards. Take a little time to make some correlations and quit poking at ******** statements such as, "omg no backwards comparability." Also, your statement about SOE is a complete logical fallacy.
edit:
Who says they won't upgrade it? They've upgraded the engine for EVE, why not DUST 514? There's aboslutely nothing that is going to hold back this game from being upgraded for the PS4. SONY releases the dev kits needed to make games for the PS4 before the PS4 even comes out. Of course CCP is going to work on this, otherwise it would just be completely irrelevant to make this game coexist with EVE Online. I'm just glad it's not going to be released until late 2013. Gives them time to rethink using an X86 AMD CPU instead of a Cell processor. Powerful my arse. What do they think they're going to compute with that? A 'decent' AMD processor costs more than 2 PS3s and produces more heat under load than a toaster oven. Sounds pretty stupid to me unless they plan on putting a griddle on top. [
You might guess I'm not pro-AMD. I don't hate them; I'm just aware enough to recognize that they're both hampered by an inability to make a decent product and Intels reluctance to release manufacturing licences to patents on their x86-64 architecture. Between the two of those AMD doesn't have much of a chance
Other thoughts:
Why use an X86 instruction set
AMD CPUs consistently underperform when compared with Intel Processors of the same speed and number of cores while having much higher TDPs on average.
Cell Processors are expensive? I gather they are as they seem to think this method of manufacture will make PS3 cheaper
That controller might actually be pretty cool. At least you can rest it on your knee
I see problems in the future for Sony. Mass market recalls, faulty/cooked PS4s, stuff to make the RROD of XBox look like a cake walk. Also: stuttering frame rates, screen blink and freezes, hard drive corruption, and various other issues as well as surprisingly underwhelming sales. The minute most people hear AMD, they're going to go out and buy an XBox.
ATi GPU? That's fine I guess, but I wouldn't expect it to handle the load normally placed on the CPU if that is their intent here. That is the only thing I can really think of, given the CPU sure isn't going to handle it and still be affordable. Imagine trying to play BF3 on a laptop using AMD Fusion. These things are so slow they barely top 2 on the Windows Experience Index
Not having a bloated OS in the background might make a significant difference but I'm not sure it is enough
Maybe things will change? Maybe SCE guys are genius and can figure out a way to make a decent console using these parts. I mean, it's not like it is the same as a PC. They do layout the PCB and memory modules and effectively use the GPUs and CPUs as onboard devices. Maybe they will use more than one Fusion CPU. That might work
I'm going to be a bit hesitant about buying one and upgrading though I think. Say.. 2 years hesitant. I think if Dust is on PC by then I'll probably just drop the notion of getting a PS4 entirely, assuming I find I truly enjoy it and am still playing it at that point. That's different to saying it's multiplatform.
At the moment you can run EVE on a baseline PC and go nuts after that with regards to grunt.
A PS3 will never be a PS4 so besides some eye candy the PS4 game will only ever be as good as the PS3 version.
For example, the PS4 might be able to do a 128 player map, but it will be 32 until they dump PS3.
If so, what's the point doing PS3? Noone is going to stop them from doing more advanced stuff that will get to the PS4 only.
Look back at EVE: Consider the PS3 the old DX7/8 client and the PS4 the new DX9 client. Both clients existed next to each other for quite some time. Similar thing will happen once they add stuff requiring DirectX 11 (e.g. Tesselation as seen at this year's Fanfest). They won't drop the DX9 client immediately. Both versions will coexist for a while.
Just due to porting the game to a better platform (no matter if it's a newer PC or the next generation of console games) doesn't mean you'll lose compatibility if you change too many things. E.g. the PS4 version could feature additional effects, higher polygon counts, better textures, etc. all without breaking compatibility. They could even add bigger maps that would be PS4 exclusive. Also, why should they wait for the PS4 to be released? Don't you want to play the game now?
Edit: Also, something important to note: Most processing being done in many modern games isn't something visual. It's behind the scene stuff like pathfinding, AI, etc. Lots of things Dust won't have to handle, because it's done server side.
Graic Gabtar wrote:So...after all that should you even think about buying a PS3 for DUST? It will definitely take some more time for the PS4 to be released, and even then... we don't know pricing etc. I wouldn't buy a PS3 solely for the game, but you have to remember there are other advantages too (like being able to play blurays) Looking for more thoughts? So wait, the source of all this speculation on compatibility and a 2013 release date is based solely on the fact that the name of the next gen console links to the Sony website?
Really people?
About the only thing "verifiable" in that article is what the code name is of the PS4. When I check troll in the dictionary, it has a photo shopped picture of you standing somewhere in the vicinity of a point.

So... All I read from all this is that we don't know what version of the PS this will be released on or if will be a PS3 port to PS4 constrained to the abilities of the PS3. EVE shall be purged by fire - please Gods let them ALL burn in Jita. |

Well, any gaming company knows the importance of release titles. If dust is a big hitter for the PSN, then rest assured that a visually upgraded component for PS4 will not be far behind. Graphics upgrades only won't be as tough because the engine would still be solid and functional (hopefully) |

Very misleading thread title. Everything you hear about the "PlayStation 4" is a rumor until Sony actually reveals something on their next system. Regardless, CCP is well aware that the current console generation is nearing its end. By the time the next consoles hit, I suspect a PC version of Dust will already have been released. |
