With all the development work we already know has been done on this, I doubt they'll just let it fade into the background. I wouldn't hedge any bets on it appearing before the final months of 09 though. |

Here is the deal, as I see it.
(tl;dr version: WiS can't happen until the classic client is gone and the minimum requirement is a video card which supports SM 2.0.)
CCP developed this awesome "ambulation" engine, using state of the art technology. Then they realized EVE's current engine uses anything but state of the art technology. So they develop Premium, but only people with video cards that support SM 3.0 or higher can participate.
Meanwhile, CCP management sees the internal demos of WiS and think it is stunning, and ready for an initial release. Tentatively, the plan for the March 10th release. Unfortunately, a developer points out that if WiS is released on March 10th, only people who can run the Premium client will be able to benefit. The emorage caused by people who currently run EVE on "older" machines, complaining that WiS has left them out--even though most of these people are the same ones who blast WiS as pointless every time it is brought up on the forums--would be unbearable.
Since even CCP Zulupark was unwilling to be tossed under the bus for this one--even with the offer of free beer for a year--the devs decided to take a look at what would be involved in scaling the engine down a bit.
It was then decided that SM 2.0 would be good enough, and if they simply dropped support for SM 1.0 and released a "Premium Lite" client in the place of the "classic" client, they could actually pull off a WiS deployment sometime this year.
This would be a win-win for CCP. They would be able to get WiS released this year, and at the same time stop spending a fortune developing new art assets twice: once for premium, and then again for classic. Sure, a small number of users would need to pony up for $50 for a new video card, and some other users would finally be forced to ditch their ten year old laptops, but even if CCP lost those accounts, the savings just from the art department would be enormous. They would also finally be able to strip out all that nasty old graphics code and work on a single, cohesive client.
So that, in my opinion, is the state of WiS. Now that CCP has finally decided to ditch the classic client, they can free up a bunch of assets to continue improvements on the premium client and seriously start work on integrating WiS into EVE. They can also finally start work on fixing planet textures, improving the old "nebula" textures, and maybe even improve on the GUI a bit.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. ;-)

Yes, they canned that idea and are presently brainstorming the new Rollerblading Around StationsÖ. Last I heard, CCP Hammerhead was trying to champion Segway'ing Around Stations until someone made him "slip" in the parkinglot. Rumour has it it was Oveur looking for a little revenge for Hammerhead dis'ing his Midget Racing mini-game proposal. And something about 7776.

dude 7 weeks isn't a long time. It's the gaming industry, a not even alpha demo basically means you'll be lucky to get news in the next 30 weeks. |

Bah, there was no conspiracy there. A conspiracy is when an organization attempts to hide nefarious actions or plans by means of deception or redirection. I'm merely pointing out a logical, possible reason why we don't have WiS yet, and what probably needs to happen before we get it.
It makes no sense that CCP would develop their ambulation engine to support SM 1.0, especially considering they deployed Premium to only support SM 3.0. If they were willing to make WiS Premium only, we would probably have it by now.
I suspect that they realized that the only way they were going to be able to deploy WiS so that everyone can participate, is to make their WiS engine SM 2.0 compatible and ditch the classic client for an SM 2.0 compatible "premium lite" client.
Plus, an SM 2.0 compatible "premium lite" client allows CCP to consolidate their development of both art assets and client coding.
So I suspect we'll get WiS at the end of the year. And I suspect after premium lite is released, we'll start seeing some nice improvements to the client and maybe even the GUI.

My take on ambulation:
Ambulation was an idea that someone had to enhance the atmosphere of the game. Some people thought it would be neat, but most people thought it was a waste of time. Then someone realized that it would spawn a massive in-game gambling industry. CCP realized that most people suck at poker and would lose their shirts, and because that would encourage many of those people to buy GTCs, they said, "HELLZ TO THE YIZZY!" Now, they may also put in official dealer mechanics (with rakes) as an isk-sink in order to mitigate the increased ISK creation. They still win.
Basically, ambulation = EVE poker (or some game they invent, but if they really want to sell GTCs, they'll just stick with poker). |

Edited by: Bartholomeus Crane on 20/01/2009 20:55:07 Nice theory, but I think it went more like this (apply tongue to cheek):
After having done some remarkedly inaccurate market research, CCP found out that one of the reasons player retention was limited in EVE was because of the limited scope for player-player interaction in the game. Also, the female of the species had trouble identifying themselves with just spaceships, and the natives had gone restless after having awkwardly pestered away all but the last of that ilk from their TS servers.
As a result of this, and as part of CCPs ongoing development of a more full, all-encompassing Sci-Fi world, a management decision was made to enhance the more social aspect of the game (that is, beyond shooting each other in the face).
Some designers, developers, and management got together for beer and rotting shark and decided, with loads of caveats attached, to go for what is now known as WiS. One major such caveat was that it shouldn't detract from the game EVE is now. Enhancement yes, replacement no.
Optimistic (or naive, depending on your PoV) CCP tentatively scheduled WiS to be released for the winter expansion 2008. Only internally obviously. All hush-hush this. However, after having worked on it for over 2 years (not full-time, but still), it was found that for WiS to be everything EVE deserved (and promised to the unwashed), the winter 2008 expansion could not be achieved. Various reasons may have contributed this, some examples: the dynamic rendering engine CCP wanted to use wasn't ready until summer 2008, the lag-monster on the cluster wasn't tamed to a sufficient degree to support WiS without adversely affecting EVE-the-game, the WiS project over-time grew in ambition. As well as some more which will probably remain hidden within the catacombs of the CCP HQ.
At any rate, by early summer 2008 (may have been earlier) CCP was faced with a problem. WiS couldn't be completed in time for the winter expansion, so they had an empty expansion slot on their hands. Some panic and frantic beer drinking ensued. Finally waking up from their stupor, the (later christened) EVE Performance Group stumbled (being still not very sure footed) upon a solution. What if the winter expansion was about the lag-monster and some other assorted stuff they had lying around on the backburner?
"Woopity-do", thought Hilmar, "that might just get us out of this pickle!", and immediately dusted off some old pet-projects, whipped the speed-balance issue out of it's doldrums, injected the FW group with some serious steroids, and assigned every developer still being able to walk (and not tied to a desk) to the EVE Performance Group to pull that proverbial rabbit from its securely fastened hat. After-all, what were all these new employees doing here anyway? Much sweating and closet alcoholism was noted.
Presto! Within weeks, leaning heavily on work previously done by some lone forgotten guy in some basement closet in the CCP HQ, a new expansion was born. Off-handedly, more out of necessity than anything else, CCP introduced SCRUM along the way.
All the material was pressed into service the moment it got out of QA in what was called a 'staggered' expansion. Although successful and welcome, it is fair to say that the expansion was received somewhat luck-warmly by the internet spaceship serious business community. They were expecting WiS, and what's worse, they wouldn't shut up about it.
Enter the PR offensive that's called Fanfest. Lots of half-baked ideas about WiS showed how far off from completion WiS really is. But epic T3 and a slew of corny insight jokes and video-clips worked well to direct the pimple-faced community to another carrot for now, using up all resources.
Meanwhile the WiS team can expect some quiet time to patiently paste together WiS for maybe a late 2009, more probably later, release date. Thus keeping the all-finger-and-toes-crossed rabble waiting (and more importantly subscribed) until release date.
And there was much rejoicing. -- Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? |
