Edited by: Erakyn on 26/01/2009 06:57:34 So myself and a couple of corp mates went looking for a small fight in Catch and we jumped into a system with a bubble about 80km off the gate (with a few corpses floating in it). Only one in local - but to be safe we align off to a planet, before aligning and fleet warping to the next gate at 0km. Now our gang was a BC an AF and an EAS - and two of us the AF, and the EAS wound up at the exit gate at 0, but our BC was pulled off the gate some 80km into a second bubble with a Smartbombing BS. Not sure if the pilot of of the BC warped independently or followed in fleet warp. But I am curious as how do these traps work and what are the mechanics of setting them up and avoiding them?

how it works:
bubbles will pull you into them if your warp exit point is within ~100km of the bubble location and your warp path crosses the bubble (even if the line of warp crosses the bubble after you left warp).
how to set it up:
move some distance behind the gate you want to camp, anchor the bubble so that your target gate and the location where you suspect targets are coming from are aligned.
how to avoid:
do not warp from entry gate to exit gate or from celestial object to exit gate, but make a midwarp safe and warp to exit gate to avoid your warp path intersecting with the bubble. |

Thread above includes some excellent tips on what to expect with bubbles on gates and how they operate, as well as how to deal with them if caught. *** Had a T1 sig - it got all blowed up. Got another T1 sig - it got all blowed up too. Can't afford another T1 sig...yet. Still training for T2 sigs, f...ing newb that I am. |

Thanks to both of you. Very helpful.
So just a further question... Does using fleet warp change the mechanics? For example why did only one of us get caught in the bubble? Was he the only one who intersected the bubble path or can a bubble (specifically the anchored Mobile Warp Disruptors - not a hictor) only catch one ship at a time?

Warping (and making BMs) introduce small (2.5km - 5 km radius) random variations for the paths.
This was implemented to prevent 50 gang warping ship bumping each other when they exit from warp. As side effect, if the bubble is not properly placed, it will only cover some of those potential paths -> only portion of warpers will get caught.
So, the bomber might have aimed the bubble against some (other) stargate, but since you instead came from a planet roughly in the same direction, he caught only few of you.
-Lasse no, there isn't any camp if there is only one in local..

Any amount of ships can be caught in one bubble (all bubbles act the same btw)
Fleet warp does not change the mechanics, he probably was not aligned with the rest of the gang so he warped independently.
When a bubble is not quite in line with the ships warp line, it has a chance of pulling the ship in or not.
This sounds like the case, highly unlikly it was a bug or lag caused bug as this mechanic is quite sound.

Sounds like two us were far enough off of the warp trajectory to not get sucked in. All in all an interesting tactic and my first experience with it so thanks for all the information.

Every time I have been podded, it is because I went through low sec or 0.0 and got nabbed by a warp bubble at a gate, while not in one of my covert ops ships.

wouldnt it be interesting if bubbles could pull ships out of warp anywhere along the warp path if the path crosses it, instead of just being restricted to being used at expected endpoints? |

They already do, its just difficult to set up, and it catches less ships than if you used the "behind" the gate technique in the 2nd post. |

they do? now thats news... I might have to experiment with setting something like that up in the middle of a big system ^^.

I thought that was nerfed a couple months ago? also tried with a large mobile, anchored then warped around a couple times, no luck |
