Great to see a web team up and running. I hope you upgrade the forums too mabye?
with things like auto linking, auto quoting (so no more unintentional pyramid quoting) a better search function? (just link it to eve-search? come on someone did the work for you, use it!)

Keeping old website and forum URLs working is absolutely essential, even if they're just backend redirects to the new page. There are loads of cases where websites have linked to something on the EVE website or forum and those links are part of what brings people to EVE. I know in my columna t massively.com I link to the forum on occasion and some forum threads are very high on google (e.g. google for EVE Triage). I just wanted to stress that. |

Nice, maybe finally the site will look more alive on the first page as it is on the forums. Sometimes there are absolutely no changes on the main page for weeks. Although this doesn't always bother me, a more... web 2.0 approach wouldn't hurt :P |

While you're at it, PLEASE : * enable some form of persistant logged-in status (NOT make me push "log in" link since it's auto-logging-in-anyway) * stop losing my session, ffs ! * add user options to remove the chronicles images from the right * add user options to move the left-hand menu to the top or bottom

Another note to the wishlist:
* A OP sign on the OP of the thread your in, so eachtime he is postin in his own thread there will be a sign of some sort around his name/picture. MMORPG.COM has this, and its a surprisingly neat feuture . Especially for long threads.

Are you planning to restore broken item database links too? For two years I have been linking items from my blog to the item database, and since the wiki went online those links are all dead.
I am sure I am not the only one with this issue, so I would like to know if you have anything planned to at least put a page up saying the item database has moved? Currently you just get a very pretty page not found message.
Example: Hacking (skill)
If this had to be the only issue I am allowed to raise in 2009, this would be it!

How embarassing I build the developer info feature and then forget to fill it in myself, I will put some stuff up asap

We understand this and we are going to makesure that all the links etc still work and if any break we will do our best to setup redirects etc to ensure a painless transition.

The item database is alas gone, replaced by the incredibly sexy wiki. However I will look at putting a page up thats a little bit more gentle than a 404. Menu structure changes will also help with this I think.
Cheers ;)

@Capslock: So can we expect to see the forum look/code to change and features added? My main reason for this is obviously with the robot EVE-Search runs, as I would have to recode it to work with the new site if so?

If any changes of this nature were to take place I will endeavour to inform the community well in advance so that excellent sites like EVE-Search can be updated.
That said, there shouldn't be anything in this batch of changes that you will have to worry about |

If you have full control of your site template Aeon (so you could include some JS) then I have some JS that would probably fix those links for you. Drop me a mail in game.
@Caps you can catch the 404, parse the request URL and with a DB lookup redirect to the appropriate wiki page - just use the right header and it'll update the search engines also. |

No offence but how can you blatantly support a website plastered with RMT adverts? I know it's a very useful website but it was removed from your official fansite list for a reason. I mean I can see why but you are now reading my signature |

You should really educate yourself on the specifics of google adsense before making yourself look stupid
Pretty much any eve related site with google ads on will suffer from RMT ads once in a while |

Main comment subsites should always have a link back to the main eve-online.com site, just to make all our lives easy this link should always be in the same location on all sites so people will not get stuck on a sub site.
Other then that, cool it can't really go bad so far you guys have made major improvements to the site on several occasions so I am looking forward to seeing how great the websites are going to turn out. ------------------------------------------- Should you disagree with me, well I guess that is because I disagree with you. If you have a problem with that please feel free not to tell me. |

Excellent, looking forward to these changes.
CCP has started using YouTube/Facebook for online marketing. But you have left out the most important and cheapest form of building a web presence: SEO and Link Building.
Yes, I have reviewed the site and links. Someone has done a real basic job, but it could be much, much better.
Please focus on this. You are loosing an estimated 10,000 - 30,000 extra subscribers per year. Subscribers that you would have gotten at a near-zero cost, certainly much cheaper than TV ads...!
Can I urge you, in the interests of best practice web development, to consider search engine optimization as one of the key objectives to meet for the new website?
The eve-online website has a Google PageRank of 7. Not many sites have this kind of PageRank...let's exploit it.
More generic phrases that you should be aiming to rank for internationally (top 5 ranking) on Google.com should include:
- MMO - Online Game - Multi-player game - Space Game - Space MMO - Sci-fi Game - Spaceship Game - Or just "Game".
Not just the obvious target ones like "Science Fiction Space MMO" etc etc. (Above list is an example only. Proper keyword research should be carried out.)
Please ensure all old URLs are 301 permanently redirected 1-1 to their new version. Don't redirect using 302. This can be done in the .htaccess file.
Some additional initiatives too look at are global RSS syndication of all CCP content (push RSS, ie. go and submit the feeds to the top 100 aggregators) as well as some more advanced on-page search optimisation initiatives such as tag clouds (popular search cloud on a per website-category level). |
