Okay, I've ready about Transdusal Velocity (TV) and I understand the concept. The less chance in vector between two ships, the easier it is for them to hit each other. I get it.
However, I don't understand how TV works in EvE on a practical level. Everything is moving around so quickly and EvE's control system is so simplified that it doesn't allow you to keep track of your TV, beyond "keep at range" (follow or chase) or "Orbit at Range..." (run around in circles).
I just don't get why they included such a complex system into the game but didn't give you the controls to manage it effectively. Am I missing something?

Awesome.
------ I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it. |

Transversal velocity (tangential if you're british) can be set to show up on your overview. It's under 'columns'.
TV will be large if the ships have a significant component of their velocity at right-angles to each other, and small if they are flying on parallel trajectories if that makes any sense.

This is the kind of help I was looking for. The rest of you silly gits can go home.
Clicking is a silly system if you're trying to work vectors like this on the fly, especially when using/fighting many small ships, imho.

Clicking is important because it gives you the ability to stop your orbit and continue straight to momentarily effect transversal. One of the reasons i want a button that simulates a click in whatever direction the camera is facing=P

Transversal velocity is useless. Angular is much easier to understand and use, since it's in the same units as your guns' tracking.

So you're suggesting a control to minimize transversal while keeping at range?
I wouldn't mind that. But what other kinds of controls to manipulate it would you like? A maximize transversal one?
You're really just talking about an autopilot that can intiate complex tactical maneuvers automatically, which ain't gonna happen, but might be pretty cool to see.
Alas that would eliminate some skill from combat in this game.

Edited by: MotherMoon on 01/02/2009 10:31:30 Edited by: MotherMoon on 01/02/2009 10:29:08 Transversal is the spee at which something is moving with you. However this number alone means NOTHING. That is NOT how radians work. IT's based on transversal and distance. There is something in your overview called "angular velocity" this is number at which need to pay attention to.
now your guns all have a tracking speed.. say .1 radians a second. This mean every 10 seconds your guns could track something moving that fast around you.
NOW, this means the farther away something is the better chance you have of hitting it.
If something is 100km away, your tracking of that target becomes wonderful, there is no way to miss.
However you also have optimal range. Which means the closer you are better chance you have some hitting something.
SO the rule of thumb is being close is bad for tracking, being far away is bad for your range, which is bad for your hit chance.
edit: I read the op wrong :P
ok now that we know this I'm going to let you in on a secret. Older pilots don't use keep at range or orbit. sometime orbit, not only if there is one target.
Manual piloting is the only way to take advantage of the system. Also manually controlling tranversal is alsimple as direction and speed. Put speed up on the overview and try to manually match speed and direction. If done correctly you will double your dps output.

i don't see the need of an explaination of angular velocity.
you'll still get tracking-disrupted, so that doesn't matter anyway. -----------------------------------------

^^ This. All you need to keep track of when thinking in rad/s is the difference in size between your guns' intended target and their actual target, since that acts as a multiplier to how well it can track those targets. |
