First, I would like to thank the commentators of the Tournaments. You have done an excellent job. With out good commentators, we'd be watching ships flying around and scratching our heads.
Some useful feed back;
1. Check microphone volume, some of you are too queit while other are too loud. 2. Good play by play during the match, save the evaluation of the match for later. 3. Try to be more positive, keep in mind it is harder then it looks (just like it is for commentation on the tournament is). Be fair, most pilots are looking forward to your commentation of their match. 4. More use of the disply to illustrate your points.
Example; ôMost of the ships are bunched in the middle of the field" - Pull back display to show the blob in the middle. ôLooks like the Ishkurs are damping the Abaddons" - Close up of the Ishkur or Abaddon.
In closing, I would like to thank all the people working behind the scene to make this happen, keep up the good work.

While I do think, that you have valid points there, I'd like to object on point 3 and try to explain, why point 4 is a bit complicated.
Best example, that point 3 ain't true is our own fight on day 4. We failed pretty hard, reasons were mostly to be found within our own setup/organisation. Yet, the commentators really tried to focus on the positive aspects. And I know that this was a tough task.
I think point 4 would be desirable, but the camera that records the fight is piloted by a dev/GM (CCP Charlie?), not by the commentators, while the commentators were sitting at home in front of their own computers.
But maybe we can such a thing like a "commentator-camera" for the Live-Feed next weekend.
Edit: Fail at quoting.

Commentators arent cameramen, the recording is done by CCP Charlie, who has no way to anticipate what the commentators are going to say, let alone what the teams are going to do. He does however often focus on key aspects of the matches and make some excellent videos..
In regards to volume issues on day 1, the commentary was fine on eve voice however it was noted that the camera client sound effects were too loud after our youtube upload. CCP Charlie listened to the community and lowered the eve sound effects on his camera computer, as well as adding HD videos of all matches to youtube.
I'd like to thank CCP Charlie for taking all issues and feedback into account and doing an excellent job recording every match and making them available inside such a short period of time, as we seen from our amazing youtube ratings it has been much appreciated by the community at large and makes the tournament matches accessible to anyone at any time.
Tune in next weekend for live televised broadcasts!

Thought all the commentry and camera work from Day 4 was excellent. Keep it up guys. I love the cutting personal comments thought it was all as clear as possible given the technolgy there and the near live turnaround of the footage to YouTube. |

I think all of your points are valid in a way. 1 is just a technical issue which has been pretty much fixed, 2: I think the commentators mostly strike a good balance in a difficult task and 4 will be fixed next week I'm sure.
As for 3, I don't mind the negative comments. Dear Eddz was extremely scathing of my team's effort on day 4, (though I find comfort in the knowledge that his alliance's team sucked even harder than we did ). The commentators are narrating for the benefit of the community as a whole and to be fair, I think most listeners and viewers are pretty thick skinned - it's no worse than smack talk really.
My only comment would be for the commentators to acknowledge more the 'paper scissors stone' aspect, in that a team may fail because they chose a particular plan and the opposing team, through luck, judgement or good spying, managed to bring something to counter it easily. For example, in the case of my team on day 4, we brought a lot of damps and chose our starting ranges based on a suspicion, (which turned out to be wrong), that we'd be dealing with an enemy gang which would stand off at 50km and then try to pull range further; we didn't want to be dealing with potentially 100km climbing rapidly to 150 or more. As it happened, the enemy brought a fast, close range dps team and we knew well before the GM shouted 'GO', that we were pretty much f****d

Commentary has been good, and getting better as the tournament progresses I feel.
My only gripe is stop bloody saying "Bleeding into armor / structure", I swear 1 match one of commentators said this 20 or more times...
It's especially annoying when you say "Bleeding into low armor", if a ships armor is at 10% its not being bled into, its bloody gone!

/signed!
I listened to all matches and at the end of the day that "bleeding into..." or "taking huuuuge amounts of damage" (mostly the current target didn't) was something to haunt me within a (bad) dream...
=> ...is going to take armor damage now... => ...is now into structure and going down... => ...is through shields now...
and so on

Lord save us from whinging, whining ninnies like Millenium Queen.
If a team bring a load of failure sauce to the table I want to hear it from the commentators with the reasons why.
"You know the way you failed there was really great..."
Spare me, please.
Keep your panglossian keak to yourself and let the rest of us live in the real [and vitural] world where everything is not "great all the time".
Your post fails, failure girl. Sorry you really rock, with that failing post, honest.

Thanks for the feedback man!
Point number one is one we try to keep an eye on. It's especially tricky since everyone on air is at a different location with different equipment, but we'll definitely try and keep a better eye on it.

Didnt have time to read other posts, apologies as Im at work.
1. Turn game volume down.. not helpful only hearing blasters. 2. Do not turn the shield/armour/hull overviews off- even near the end of the match. A picture tells a thousand words, and I for one an quite interested in the speed at which each is lost.

Edited by: Smagd on 03/02/2009 14:31:58 Maybe reduce a little on the "absolute droneswarm" jargon, too. Personally, I can't hear that any more.
Even a lot of non-drone ships will more likely than not field 5 drones, since putting all your eggs into a single big basket is probably not wise.
It's still okay to use that for say 10 Thorax setups I guess, but consider preparing a few catchier phrases like say "all those drones flocking after him like bees with pitchforks" (for Goon games) or "Bet Evil Thug wishes he could have smuggled in his Titan to doomsday all those sentries".
Go ahead, take a minute, write a few fun lines like that. "The alpha-strike from the Abaddons is just awesome" BORING! "They're frying all the other team's eggs at once" "Meltdown! We have meltdown! Abandon ship, abandon ship! I think I can see the first pods ejecting already."
I bet someone could come up with a good pirate theme, too. "He's on the plank and the wind is picking up." (Hey Verone, that's your job!)
It should help to look up match-ups now, too. For instance I'm SURE there must be a good few lines for repeat matches or say RPers vs RPers. "They probably don't primary Jade Constantine first because they're liberals and want for everybody to have the same right to blow up."
There's at least one Aussie team in it, make it visible to the audience they're gaming in the middle of their night (2am - 8am). "He had to get out of bed before noon on sunday, and they way he's shooting he hasn't had coffee yet."
Just ideas. |

Absolutely. As much as I love Verone and his superb commentary, the bleedin' bleeding is killing me! In Veto, ships don't take damage, they bleed.

Some of the commentators /cough Edz /cough call the match way too early. When it is being watched by the audience then that kind of thing is fine, but if being listened to (the live audio) then that is just lazy announcing. Instead it would be better for the commenters of the live audio to spend time constantly updating the listener with ship types remaining, positions, main target etc. and the 'benny hill' thing has to go, or at least use some variety in phrasing.
Other than that the live audio was fun to listen to and better than nothing. |

Given that none of the commentators are professionals I think the commentary has been excellent overall. There seemed to be a few hic-ups early on but those all seemed to be worked out. Good job to you all.
On a side note I know the drunken shout of "BOOOOM HULL SHOT!" is a bit taboo now but could one of you do it in an upcoming match? Just once for me, pretty please

on the intro sequence:
Alliance A vs. Alliance B
when the match starts:
Alliance B vs. Alliance A
so my suggestion would be to either keep the sides on title and during the battles the same OR the "lazy" commentators should announce in the beginning who is on what side. |

Ya, we really don't care what you think about the ships during the match, we just want to know what's happening. Sometimes you get so caught up in commentating that you miss entire kills. It's really apparent when we go back and watch videos later, there's tons of stuff you guys miss that we'd like to hear about. Not stuff like "is that a warp scrambler? I think I just saw a scrambler... I definitely just saw a scrambler." And no, you'll never live it down. |
