you know it's just one guy who's making this, right? if you really think that this will be compertition to EVE, you're sadly mistaken. what you've linked is a very pretty little movie he has made, not a playable demo.

Even if it was an entire team behind it, it would be near impossible to beat the 6+ (I leave the pre alpha etc, period out) years of development put into EVE.
Besides that, no-one but CCP, is 'foolish' enough to put everything onto 1 shard. That's just madness.

Also trying to copy eve niche gameplay would just be a losing proposition. As it has been so obviously pointed out about all the players who would be tempted into playing an eve type game are already here except for the ones who don't frequent game sites or subscibe to magazines. Those will be snapped up when the retail box hits and then there will be none left for any other eve like game. So that leaves stealing away a significant portion of the established playerbase and quite frankly I don't ever see that happening as there are no eve like games in production just a bunch of modified wow in space clones infinity included.

I would'nt shoot it down so fast.
If it can nail ship to ship combat via actual controls (somehting EVE still lacks), and gets some nice atmospheric gameplay going, it will be pretty competitive.
However I highly doubt it will ever compare to the vast player aspect of EVE, ie markets, 0.0 end game etc, no MMO is this deep. EVE history

Exactly, at worst a portion of the playerbase will be playing both games and a new mmo forum flame war will commence.

It hasn't been just one guy for over a year. They have released the Infinity Combat Prototype which is the combat and graphics engine in a standalone version for testing purposes. So there is a bit more happening than just a pretty little movie.

Edited by: Navtiqes on 12/02/2009 09:23:33 ...even a game about wizards and elves like Darkfall Online is more likely to be competition to EVE than that thing.
...even 40K Online will be more competition, despite the fact that it seems like it'll sadly be another PvE grindmare regardless of the awesome sci fi license. |

But you're making a bad assumption, that everyone who plays Eve is a totally hardcore fanboy who wouldnt leave for any reason. My experience is a substantial portion of the player base like eve, but theyre not wedded to it and would leave if something better came along. But right now its the only really viable non-fantasy MMOG--only ones that come remotely close are Tabula Rasa (DOA) and Anarchy Online (plays like the ancient 2001 MMO that it is, probably gone within the year too).
Over the last year or so CCP has gotten much better at responding to what the rank and file players want, but even so if theyre not careful or slip up theyre gonna wake up one day and wonder where everyone went. That being said, I dont think a couple of guys in a garage are going to dethrone CCP--even if they have good ideas, the final product wont be sleek enough or properly marketed to attract a substantial number of users. _________________ [IMAGE REMOVED] -- aka Cpt Bogus -- Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Queue m10 with its personal empire in a bottle hard to reach your exact w-space system by the playerbase due to random wormholes game mechanic and the general carebearing of highsec space. I think CCP is on it.

EVE has what, 15000 solar systems?
This one has 200 billion (if I read it correctly) meaning if they will ever get 50.000 people online you will prolly never meet any of them
Also EVE is where it is after 6 years of gameplay and look at all the new things happening almost every year making it's development very fast (and for free).
Also Infinity has been in development since even EVE was launched or from 2002 so I guess it's kinda missed the train

I think CCP is on it.
I like to think that one day in the not so distant past Hellmar was dusting off one of the original boxes for a touch of nostalgia, and after reading the back they said "Funny thing, these professions. Seems we've spent all our time lately on the soldier and pirate bit and totally forgout about the miner, freelancer, trader and bounty hunter. Maybe someone should get on that, and while they're at it let's make some more of these boxes."
Hey, it could have happened. _________________ [IMAGE REMOVED] -- aka Cpt Bogus -- Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?
