As profit margin falls, fewer people will bother, supply goes down with constant demand, price increases, more people start producing, cycle repeats. This is my prediction.

Really, there needs to be a super-sized secure ore can. I'm surprised miners aren't up in arms to get one, but I guess by the time it's really important, most of 'em already have a hauling alt. Back on topic: what they said.
