Oddly enough, there was a bug with identical symptoms on Windows when Apocrypha was launched, I remember crashing to desktop on my Vista when rendering icons on my first trip to W-space about a day after the patch went live.

For the record, I figured out that even with the manual patch I was getting the "Unable to elevate" error when trying to patch. The solution was (for me - mileage may vary) to change my settings from "Vista" to "XP" in winecfg. I suspect it has ...
