sounds like each probe could see the signal, but it wasnt collapsing in to a single point. Once you get a red dot, get 4 active probes around it with their globes overlapping around the red dot. then scan, you should get a higher signal strength ...

Cant remember who's footer it is on SHC but it reads 'Only a fool wishes for combat in a stealth ship' Nano / OD in the lows 2 LSE2's +MWD in the Mids Thats pretty much cookie cutter. Best of Luck to ya.
