I would go as far as suggesting defensive bonus types that work well with the ship: how about signature radius reduction and agility increase? Makes them slow to target and fast to gtfo.

Missiles have pros and cons. I believe that they're ok, although you have to use middle slots as damage amplifier. There is however a big problem with rockets, because they suffer from an incredibly reduced explosion speed - less then heavy missil...
