To boil it down to the basics, time creates isk, whether it be mining, hunting, trading, or missioning. But Destruction of items negate the time investment, so overall, isk is lost.

With the missile patch, making missiles much like gunnery, defenders should have been removed. There is no corrosponding gunnery skill that just destroys incoming fire. So all in all, I'd say you have to suck up the damage, like you would have to...

I do agree, all Barges should get some armor added on, most Industrials have a decent amount. And definatly need tech 2, "0.0" miner ships, with more PG/CPU, few more med/low slots, and a lot more armor, at the cost of ship speed.
