The noctis is the absolute best salvage ship ever. Suck the wrecks in, chew them up, spit out the cans. Then eat the cans too. I use five tractors to three salvagers, just out of preference/habit.

I help newbs all the time. If they ask a question in local, I answer it. Occasionally, they even learn a lesson all on their own. Someone found a wormhole while I was missioning, and showed up back a few minutes later having been podded.

The best way to counter ewar and ECM is just to bring a friend. That forces them to divide between two ships, with MUCH reduced effectiveness. Fitting a sensor booster and backup sensors never helped a jot solo, for me. Maybe 5 seconds on the min...

Some sort of in-line spreadsheet. Or at least a way to easily copy and paste name and quantity of the selected items to a text file. Every so often, the alt-tabbing to update my spreadsheets causes windows to throw a fit.
