I've just done a new fresh install of the client on ubuntu x64 8.10, wine 1.18, nvidia 177.82 (9600gt) and I'm getting the same message as the OP... Was working nicely in crossover until the latest patch, which mysteriously killed icon pictures.

Crossover: 1 n.b. Apocrypha seems to have greatly increased performance, and high shader + 8xAA is slightly slower than high + HDR + bloom + AA on vista (9600gt, ubuntu 8.10). Not actually tried shooting anything yet - but it might be good enoug...
