you may be able to run wine on the exefile with the unix pathting, that I don't know for sure. But you can definitely make the windows partition into a wine partition and run it that way

check your videodrivers. But if the high fps is causing the tearing, I think I'd try renicing instead.

If I read correct, when you zoom out you get good framerates and when you zoom in again it drops? Try disabling some effects, I have a similar problem when in larger fleets.

How long in the past was this? Ubuntu has implemented a proprietary driver manager in one of the later releases (8.10 I think, not sure) This should help a lot on your fps. I must say, I never had any problems.
