If selected items is resizing it's probably your snap distance. The setting is in the esc menu and I prefer to set it at 3. You move the hud by dragging it from the center though I'm not sure if it moves the ewar icons but it should.

Example with cas. Spawn system is cistuvaert but career agents are a couple jumps away. And arnon is a dozen jumps. You might just be in the wrong systems. I've interacted with noobs in local, they are around.

When you are calculating value, you care about isk per m3, not isk per unit. Value of ores depend on local market conditions. A barge should be really easy to get into, if you can scrounge the isk.
