And most importantly...4-hit dragon punch? -------------

awesome game!
they kept all the core gameplay elements that made SF fun and threw in some awesome manga type graphics and animation
ken is not the 'best' anymore, every char has their strengths and in the right hands they are all deadly.
Playing online is a dream come true

Yep, best game I have played in the last 20 years easily. I am totally hooked and reliving classic street fighter memories of childhood, but now in beautiful 3D.
I'm currently playing SF4 on XBOX and my gamertag is Matt Symonds if anyone wants to challenge me in-game.
Happy to bet battleships on the outcome :) or just play for fun.

Probs pick this up at the weekend in a vain attempt to relive my misspent yoof hanging around a dirty kebab shop, which had a very dodgy SFII machine in a backroom. For a brief moment in my life I was considered cool coz I was better than average on it.

Bastard! Now I'll be on noodles for a while. You made me look at some youtube clips and then order the bloody thing. I have great nostalgia for the old SFII. This looks very good. ----------------------

On the topic at hand I have 2 questions:
1. Has anyone else seen the previews for the street fighter movie? I wonder if it will be as cheesy as the original.
2. Anyone catch the cartoon? Caught it the other night on sci-fi's anime mondays. Was kinda hoping Gundam would be on honestly but oh well.

Very fun game and definitely addicting. Playing online is very fun at I haven't experienced any significant lag that I would say ruined the experience. In fact I only experienced it (noticeably) once during the 3 dozen or so matches Ive had online. My biggest issue with playing online is EVERYONE SEEMS TO PICK KEN. Him and his damn fierce uppercut has ungodly priority....its quite aggravating :)
The new characters are great; my fav being Viper. Cammy is really fun as well.

So I finally got to give it a go. The 4-hit dragon punch is still there but I can't pull it off consistently :-( I can't work out how to do any of the super/ultra moves, but I love the extra touches. The comic-like intros, ending, etc. The voices, the graphics are great and it's fantastic to have the king of 2D fighters back, only with Live! play!
They seemed to overcompensate with Zangief though. He went from slow, lumbering and hard-hitting to frikking quick, tough and hard hitting. I can consistently pull off the spinning pile driver which I'd get maybe 1 in 5 on my SNES. I don't like how throw has it's own button now...too many damned buttons. And what's the deal with that insane mexican dude? And lastly, how on earth do you unlock stuff? Are Cammy, T.Hawk, Dee Jay or Bruce Lee in there, but simply locked? -------------

Edited by: Jin Entres on 04/03/2009 14:36:51 I've played it quite a bit now and have some praises and gripes:
First off, I love the extent to which it is loyal to the original. The same mechanic works and timing is emphasized over memorizing difficult combos (however there are still plenty to memorize, which no fighter can probably avoid and perhaps shouldn't either). The looks are cool, cartoonlike and work. The new mechanics like focus attack, ultra and super combos are pretty neat aswell and for the most part work well in conjunction with the basic system.
Now, the criticism. First, the learning curve for different characters is a bit unbalanced. The basic characters like Ryu and Ken are easy to master compared to ones with a more difficult set of special moves. Often a system like this is balanced through rewarding those who master the more difficult characters later, but in this case it would seem that the basic characters have too few flaws or no vulnerabilities at all. Partly as a result, every second player you encounter online is a Ken ù to the point where it becomes frustratingly ludicrous. You'd think that finding good strategies against them would fix this but the problem is, there aren't many that work with any consistency. Of course, this may be a sign of me just being a poor player at this point so I invite you and anyone to offer ideas and strategies. But in general, there seems to be little incentive other than aesthetics to master a non-basic character.
Anyway, I don't really have anything against people playing Ryu and Ken etc. They are the lifeline of street fighters anyway and most likely I'm just going to either adapt by joining them or accept losing a lot and play something more interesting. About the online mode, it works pretty well generally. However, oftentimes finding and joining games can take a while and you get a mysterious "unable to play" message which leaves you wondering why, exactly. It's somewhat luck dependent and I'm sure people with different connections at different locations have different experiences with it. As a tip, request mode through arcade seems to work better for getting fights than trying to find games through the network interface.
For the last poster, unlocking characters is mainly done through completing the game with some specific character. This is simple and easy for the first 6 and the last 3 require significantly more effort. You can make the process faster by setting difficulty to easiest and rounds to 1. If you have trouble beating the opponents (which I hope you do not at 'easiest'), I read somewhere that just repeatedly tapping the heavy kick will do the job adequately (also useful for doing them semi-afk I suppose). Chun Li unlocks Gen, Ryu unlocks Sakura, Sakura unlocks Dan, Abel unlocks Fei Long, C. Viper unlocks Cammy and M. Bison unlocks Rose. For Akuma IIRC you need to complete the game with Ryu a 2nd time while having no losses, no continues (easier with 1 round matches), at least I think 1 or 2 ultra finishes and perfect rounds during the run and finally beat Akuma himself after completion. Then for Gouken it gets even sillier, I can't remember the requirements and once you have him, you can unlock Seth by completing the game on all other characters. ----------------------

Edited by: Nebulous on 04/03/2009 21:10:55 I'm an old veteran of SF2 and without blowing my trumpet to much I like to think i'm above average at both SF2 and SF4, problem I have with SF4 is these Ultra moves, they actually reward you for being hit, wtf is that all about?? So i'm finding that when I play online i'm pulling off big combo's because the other guy is below average, problem is that this person i'm fighting is poor in general but is good at executing the ultra moves at the right time, so after busting my balls by executing numerous combo's i'm losing or nearly losing just by getting caught out by two ultra moves from the opposing player, maybe i'm just whining about nothing, just don't see why a) you should be rewarded for being hit and b)be able win by basically putting in little or no effort.
