They are putting boxes on shelves, right? Because even a small retail store release has to generate numbers in the low tens of thousands.
Add in teh fact that EVE adverts have been plastered in gaming magazines and web banners for a good 2 years now and we may have numbers approaching 100k.
Can anyone fathom what that will mean for empire? Jita lag? Anything?
I'm shuddering at the strain it may create; both to server resources and elbow room. ----------------- Friends Forever |

It will mean that I can try to dump tons useless modules at relatively high prices on the market in starter systems and someone might actually buy them. Also more targets and tears on the forums. It's going to be sweet.

Thousands will sub, only a fraction will resub.
Having EVE in shops will definitely increase the overall rate of growth though

This game is currently advertised on popular gaming websites, tv and I even get it as adds on major search engines like yahoo. While a box copy will increase the player base, I think some people are greatly over estimating it's impact. Here in the states for example they don't sell EVE time cards, the only way to pay as someone starting up is via one of the online methods (I realize this may not be the case everywhere). so what's to stop people from just buying the game online as well?
EVE is a niche game, just because a box is on the shelves doesn't mean we are going to get 200k people online come March 10th or whatever. Some people will check it out, many will probably leave even with the new player experience and some will stay. Seems to me it's kinda the way it's been for some time.

Yeah, I'd go with that. I think there will definitely be an impact, but EVE's been around for almost 6 years and I think that it's been so high-profile over the last year or two that the influx won't be truly staggering.
Hopefully I'm wrong.

I hope there's gonna be a ****load of new people, that stay. I seriously want EVE to grow huge, i want 100k people on at the same time. Now, obviously, i also want the hardware to be able to sustain that.

Don't get me wrong, new players are good for EVE in the end. I just don't believe the box will hit shelves and EVE will turn into Warcraft in Space like some people fear.

I don't think it's gonna be that bad. I took a walk down my local shopping centre yesterday went into the four gaming shops that are in the shopping centre, not one of them were advertising the fact you could even pre order it. In all four shops only 10% of the self space was given over to PC games. Then in one shop i asked a member of staff if they were taking orders, His response was "EVE what" ?
make of that what you will.. Typical Pvp'er if it's not handed to them on a plate they start crying unfair.

Edited by: Destination SkillQueue on 21/02/2009 11:46:53 I'm actually wondering how long till CCP gets the details sorted out? I browsed through a few sites that sell it and everyone had different details about it. Even the boxart varies between the original release and the mock box CCP made. It's going to be out soon, so they better decide on things. If they have decided on things, I and the rest of the world must have missed it.

Music: holey $%@ we sold 10,000! SWEET! Gaming: *^$@, we only sold 10,000, what went wrong?
i think a large proportion of the taret market is the 'subscribers who want fancey box-art for their shelvs' demographic. If they want to scratch retail the advertising would need to be a lot more visable then it is at the moment.
retail, theese days, is a massive risk.

I'd probably buy the retail version just for the box on the wall to be honest, it's the one thing that stops me using Steam, I like having my display case of boxes.

That your local gaming stores have incompetent personell. If they dont know about an MMO thats been around for 6 years, what are they doing in a game store? The ppl in my local stores even know of Infinity and shady games like that. Its their friggin job to know these things.

Keep in mind, the vast majority of the MMO population is already aware of EVE and I am sure many have already tried it. This is not like a typical MMO launch where it's a completely new game no one has tried yet, like with AOC and WAR. And people flock to it because no one really knows what it's like. It's really just a re-release. What are the sales numbers for re-released games? Not sure. I am sure there will be people who may have looked at it in the past, even tried it, who will be enticed back. But it's pretty up in the air how many people it will be. ----------------------------------------------------

Atari has access to shelve space in 50k stores (mentioned a while ago in an interview or press release).
Figure an average of 2 boxes sold per store (which seems a low guess to me) and we're talking 100k new players.
Many of those will play for a short while and then drop out - so let's just pick 50% as a percentage that stays a usual amount of months - then that's a net increase of 50k new players. --- Save the forum: Think before you post. A little bit off topic but i couldnt help noticing this - "Instant War Access - Retail box buyers will receive an in-game certificate that will give them instant access to Factional Warfare, while other users have to spend considerable time earning the right to fight for the factions."
Does this mean if i buy a box set i can fix my standings? If it does im buying one.... Maybe two.
Anyone know?

Personally, I'm expecting a bigger peak when the boxes start hitting the bargain bin. Not because I think EVE is a bad game, but more like an acquired taste, like blue cheese or rotten shark.

Loads of new pilots = loads of new targets and potentially loads of new members for new corps. New corps and new pilots are the lifeblood of EVE. We can keep fighting over Delve, Pure Blind, Tribute, Curse, whatever -
We will always have new blood coming into the game, people who think having a cruiser is cool.
And long may they come in, and long may they think that.
Give them a year and a half and they'll be dangerous if they've fitted their ships right.
Is there a problem here ?

The true question is how many of the players brought in with this re release--what other games can you think of that have re releases 5 years post? I can, and they're all made by Blizzard--are going to still be here a year from now?
No matter what the sales figures are, you're still going to see:
Half those leave in first month, "Dude, you mean I have to make my own content?"
Half of those leave after first 6mo's, "Guys, this empire stuff sucks"
The remainder will get in big with industry, warfare, or pirating and contribute to EVE for a lasting period.
Lets hope that remainder is nice and high, because as good as new blood is, player retention is important, both for CCP and for a game that relies heavily on player run markets and content.

Or perhaps an epic CGI advert with DDs going off and lots of explosions in its wake :)
But yeah, TV advertising might grab a lot more too...especially the sci-fi folk, but it's reallllllly expensive. ----------------------------------- "What can go wrong, will go wrong." |

Its nice to speculate on how many boxes will be sold to new players but what I would like to know is how many will be sold to old players cause I know I'm going to buy one. It may be silly to buy a box copy of a game that is free to download and that I already play and have more than one account too but I want one, I want one now!!!
Hope it has a 5000 page color leather bound manual with a quilt sized cloth map of the universe. And a pin-up poster of Eris Discordia and Ginger, with a bobble head Whisper and mockup Wrangler store and
