Hey, me and the misses are off to iceland soon and we are looking for things to do. Seeing as a fair few of you are fanfest veterans or actually living there i wonderd if you could help us with choosing stuff to do, we have got the golden circle and bluee lagoon down already but were a bit stumped on the rest. What do you suggest? And no she doesn't play eve :P (although i tried!)

It depends on interests really. But as Iceland has such a dramatic and alluring landscape and some unusual wildlife maybe do something like visit puffins? Or go on a tour of Hekla (the volcano). You've got the bases covered already with the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon.
Depending on conditions:
Puffins: There are a number of places in Iceland where you can visit the Atlantic Puffin. Ltrabjarg is one of three largest bird cliffs in Iceland. Located in the west of Iceland it is also as far west in Europe you can get. Other Puffin areas are The Westmann Islands , Breiafjrur and Lundey ( Puffin Island) just outside Reykjavik. Lundey is not nearly as big a puffin colony as the others but around 30.000 puffins inhabit this small island which is just 3 minutes sailing from Reykjavik.
Hekla: The interior route to Landmannalaugar crosses lava fields, small rivers, black ash and scoria desert, and passes volcanic craters, which make up an eerie lunar- type landscape. Landmannalaugar is surrounded by colourful mountains due to millennia of volcanic activity in the area. Possibility to bathe in a warm brook, remember to bring along swim-suit and towel (please note that use of soap is strictly forbidden).
On the way back to Reykjavk the tour will drive along the roots of the world famous and quite active volcano Mt. Hekla but the latest eruption was in the year 2000.
Museums: http://www.randburg.com/is/tourism/museums.html
Hire a guide/copter to take you onto a glacier?
Visit the volcano featured in Jules Vernes Journey to the Centre of the Earth: http://www.iceland-experience.com/iceland_journey_tour.htm
Then back in town party!
I've only done the golden circle, blue lagoon and the party bit. Next time I plan to go to Snaefellsjokull as I have a geocache to visit there. Geeky but so what.

I can recommend eating some exotic animals. Puffins are goofy looking, but quite tasty.
Oh, and whatever you do: Do not go have dinner at Perlan / The Pearl. They'll tell you it's a tourist attraction, and they're right in terms of the view. The actual restaurant, though... Avoid it like the plague. Only place I've ever walked out on due to bad service before food had even hit the plates.
In terms of sight seeing, for this time of year I'd say you're decently covered with what you have, and possibly the puffins. Although if you can get it this time of year, getting in a decent 4x4 car and going out in the countryside is quite different from the greater Reykjavik area.

*cough* Wrong forum!
Anyway, as a foreigner living in Iceland, I thought I'd give a couple of pointers on things that I at least have enjoyed doing here, in terms of touristy things that is.
1) Reykjavik Excursions are very good in my experience - I haven't actually heard anything bad about any of the tour operators here, but I've only had good experiences with Reykjavik Excursions. Tours I suggest in particular:
- Golden Circle (you have it listed already, but it is awesome)
- South Shore Adventure - it is awesome. Amazing waterfalls (including one you can walk behind), a stop at a museum with a superb tour that talks about how people survived here over the centuries, and a stop on a wonderful beach. And, I suggest the lamb chops at the restaurant it stops at for lunch. Superb.
- Saga Circle - Hraunfossar. There is something quite wonderful about seeing streams emerge from under a lava field, turning into a big waterfall of sorts. Something truly unique. Also, it stops at the highest flowing hot spring in Europe, which is particularly stunning on a cold day (huge amounts of steam), Deildartunguhver.
There certainly isn't a lack of things to do for tourists, and it really is a stunning country. _______________ CCP Diagoras Research and Statistics |

Having never been I would have no idea of what to reccommend doing whilst there.
However, a word of warning, be on the lookout for grade z failed popstars with a penchant for inedible nik naks and budget pizza related snacks.

Hey thanks for all of your responses, were thinking southshore definately now. Basically we want to view the natural beauty of the place, we're not into history that much. Jkulsrln looks incredible but the only tours we've found are quite expensive, is there any other tour companys worthy of note except Iceland excursions? Also if a native icelander sees this could they comment? Thanks again.

I would recommend taking a day trip to Snaefellsness. There are tons of waterfalls and some awesome lava fields on on the coast that are great to hike through while also providing some great views of the coast and the glacier within a head turn.
The thing about Iceland is that the weather can make or break your visit, in the summer the weather is usually pretty nice but it can go an entire summer just raining the entire time, so hopefully you get the better weather because I believe it really affects your impression of the country.
Here's a picture of my friend and I exploring Snaefellsness Boom
BTW try the hotdogs in Reykjavik =D

Quote: Try the hot dogs in Reykjavk
But if you have a heart condition, consider passing on the mustard. Both Bill Clinton and our Minister of Agriculture both had to be hospitalized due to heart problems only a few days after eating mustard-laden hot dogs here.
Sadly, I'm not well-versed in tourist transportation here, so I can't help you much with that. A south shore trip sounds nice, as you won't be travelling too far from Reykjavk, but you'll still see lots of cool stuff. If you can work it into the route, hop on the ferry to Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands).
IIRC, Puffin Island can be reached by foot. At least I recall a site somewhat east of Katla (the volcano) that had a huge puffin colony that you could get a tour of in a tractor. A south shore trip might take you that far east, but I'm not certain.
A trip to the Western Fjords, on the other hand, will take you to the topmost reaches of the country...and also the most beautiful parts of Iceland, IMO. Deep fjords, tall mountains, an awesome waterfall (Dynjandi) and birds...lots and lots of birds. But the road system there is about 30 years behind the times, so only go up there if you'll be here during the summer. Something to keep in mind if you'll return to Iceland sometime later.
Hope this helps. |

I hear the Shark is especially deliscious. However the supply of it is so low that people try to tell you it's awful. The more people eat it, the more expensive it is. So these people have personal interest to stop people from eating it, as they would then have to pay more for a meal.
Don't be fooled by these people with only their own interest in mind. Free the shark market, eat shark today.

I tried the shark. It is godawful by most people's standards, I just found it interesting.
Tastes like Buckley's.
