Best news I have heard all week.
Now if only the UK start working on its OWN Linux variant for schools we are getting somewhere. In fact if the UK started to work on its own Linux variant for schools and the new laptops it would create more jobs (programmers, IT techys.)
While reducing running costs and lockins.
Did the UK government just do something competent?

Reinventing the wheel defeats the point - just pick up a distribution and run with it.
Maybe they finally figured out the service contracts with Hungarian call centres issuing job IDs to subcontractors a few doors away are a rip-off. Or maybe the old palm grease stopped flowing.

I'm not sure this is a good idea. I've had the fortune to work with schools and hospitals in the UK, and nearly everywhere, the people running IT are really bad at what they do. If they're awful at manageing Windows which is at least user friendly, then I shudder to think how they'll handle something like linux. I think if the UK government adopted open source solutions, it'll be a case where the adoption costs will be cheaper, but the running costs will be far, far more. Remember, chooseing software is more than just it's RRP. You need a a whole infrastructure to support it, and our schools and hospticals simply dont have it. So they'd have to pay really expensive contractors to do it... and thus the rip of cycle starts all over again :( The public sector should stay with what it knowns, windows.

"the shift from proprietary standards could save the government ú600m a year."
I love this bit^^ All because you pay for something doesn't make it any better then its open source counterpart.

We hear that with every release of EVE patch notes. Adapt, improvise, overcome.
