Pretty much this. Campaign is OK but the skirmishes are pretty bad. Leave RTS games on the pc tbh __________________

There's many games I want and have missed since I deployed...So I have no idea where to start. CC3 just didn't feel right as a console game... So I'm not sure if I want HaloWars or not...
Honestly I wish they had picked a better name for it...makes me think of...

No. I will not get Halo Wars, because of where the original idea came from.
Around 2005-2006, a group of modders got the idea to produce a Halo-themed mod for an RTS. They chose 'Command & Conquer: Generals/Zero Hour' as the base program for the mod, and the resulting project was called Halogen.
They worked on Halogen, as best as I can tell, for about two years before its immense popularity (someone had even submitted box art for it!) drew it into Microsoft's sights. So, a few weeks before Halogen was due to be released, the modders recieved a cease & desist note.
Literally two days later, *poof!* Halo Wars is spontaneously announced.
Now, I understand that Halo is Microsoft property, and that they have a right to control the use of that property - but I've seen mods based on WH40K, Star Wars, Star Trek, Stargate, Battlestar Galactica - heck, I've even seen an EVE-themed RTS mod. But no cease & desist notices - because everyone else realises that bumping projects off after people have put dedicted time into them does NOT generate good feelings. The mod team leader actually got a note from Bungie indicating that they disagreed with Microsoft's decision, but had to go along with it.
Don't believe me? Search the internet - you will find it. ----------------------------------------------

Erm. Tons of cease and desist notices. Being a member of the Homeworld II modding community for a while, as well as the x2/x3r/x3tc communities, there are TONS of IP infringement problems, and a number of cases where mods are simply ended due to a notice like this.
Nothing like you say with halo wars...
I know the eve rts mod for homeworld two has an official sanction from CCP. Others are usually simply 'under the radar' so to speak. With the tons of star wars or star trek mods, nobody honestly cares...
Although why someone would want a land-based halo mod is beyond me; Id prefer a space based one.. Problem is that the UNSC cant win any space battles :p

That would be incorrect. Halo, in fact, originally started off development as an RTS to begin with. It was Microsoft who came in and changed it to a FPS.
I wasn't a huge fan of the demo, as it seemed very simple and clunky. But we shall see. |

QFT, Halo was indeed initially supposed to be an RTS.

Got it on Thursday [gotta love Play.com! ] and have been thoroughly enjoying it ever since.
Storyline: short but it's got everything you could want out of Halo - Spartans, an annoyingly smarmy AI, Flood, Sentinels and a good story in a part of the Halo universe that not many people really know about unless you read the books [I haven't]. The 15 missions are about as long as a run-through of Halo 3's campaign - 10-15 hours really - but are all very well executed and nice and different.
Gameplay: extremely well balanced, but still letting both the Covenant and UNSC retain a great degree of asymmetry. For example, each side has three leaders to choose from in a Skirmish mode; Captain Cutter, Sergeant Forge and Professor Anders for the UNSC and The Arbiter [an earlier one], a Brute Chieftain and Prophet of Truth for the Covies. The Covenant get the benefit of an actual leader unit on the battlefield, who can be upgraded to be extremely powerful; the Arbiter for example can be upgraded to permanently cloak, deal 3x his normal damage, reflect some damage back at those who deal it to him and restore hp from any kills he makes during his Rage mode; but only get one unique unit and leader power. The UNSC get a passive leader bonus, i.e. Anders has half the research cost and research time, which is impossibly useful, as well as a unique unit and a "super-unit" upgrade. For example, Captain Cutter can upgrade his Marine squads to ODSTs, which wield shotguns, have squad medics [marines do have eventually these but the research is required to conduct the ODST upgrade anyway] and are much more resilient, as well as can be dropped via a pod from the Spirit of Fire anywhere you wish; whilst Sergeant Forge gets the Grizzly tank upgrade to his Scorpions - these tanks have two cannon which fire more powerful shots as it is, giving something like 3x the damage of a scorpion, as well as having a much more powerful variant of the anti-infantry canister shell ability, and being resilient to the tune of 2.5x a scorp's armour.
My only criticism is that you will really have to spend a few skirmish battles getting to grip with the Covenant. The campaign acts as an extensive UNSC tutorial with a nice story, but teaches you very little about how to use Covenant vehicles and what not. If you can get to grips with the Covenant, you will probably find that they are the better race, having a potentially higher unit cap, a better uber unit [Scarab] than the UNSC and both a laterally and vertically higher tech tree. Other than this, IMHO the sides are balanced to a very high degree, and with practice it's easy enough to learn how to wield both of them.
Graphics & Audio: not amazing when fully zoomed in, but the action is pretty high-octane stuff so you won't notice to be honest. The graphic and sound effects are what really stand out here - every single effect corresponds exactly to what you'd expect from the Halo games - the thudding of plasma turrets, the drone of the warthog's chaingun and the iconic sound of the MA5B assault rifle from the marines if you zoom in far enough - it's all there and Halo Wars is a better game for it.
Overall: 10/10. I can see just how amazing this is going to be over Xbox Live. IMHO it's exactly what consoles need to highlight the fact that an RTS can work on them. Serious kudos to Ensemble for pulling off such a class, refined and yet fun game - you couldn't have asked for a better swansong, so here's hoping that Robot studios brings a sequel out!
tl;dr: Awesome game, supremely fun, well balanced, good-looking, high-octane, awesome music, superb SFX, interesting if short storyline, Spartan kickassery galore . . . what more could you want? -----

Edited by: Jacob Mei on 28/02/2009 16:16:27 Keep in mind I have only played the demo:
I was over all impressed with the demo that I played. Given that the game is meant for the console and having always played decent RTS on the computer I really didnt have high expectations. Halo wars seems to be a product of developers attempts to mainstream the genre, instead of micro managment of resource hunting and gathering, constructing your base and so forth. Resource controling is basicly out the window as bases are responsable for generating your resources, in playing a skirmish I found that if I took over a second base I could have it focus solely on resource creation and so my raw material collection was out pacing my construction.
The counter to resource gathering however is that bases are limited in how many modules (to borrow an eve term) you can put on a base at any one time. Bases cna be upgraded to add more buildings but ultimately you will be forced to operate at least 2 bases to create a decent militiary industrial complex and not worry about hitting the dreaded not enough resource limit.
The command and control layout for the console is remarkablly easy to use and remember. After about five minutes of play I didnt have to go "what button did what again?"
This is also perhaps the first RTS that I was actively changing my angle of view on to enjoy the detail of the units, buildings and surroundings, something I may have only done when looking at a particular unit or building just to admire it then go back to the game and never do it again.
Fortunitely, when choosing to play either UNSC or the covvie's is a tactical choice. UNSC is all about getting the units out and ready but at the expense of really having to spread out to other bases to open the full tech tree as some units will require more power resource then their covvie counterparts (see below). The covvies on the other hand are more research inclined and strengthing their forces, as a result a covvie player may not be as inclined to spread out to other bases as they can reach their full tech tree with just one base, but likely will as the covvie are high on resource consumption.
There are three resources one must watch, raw materials (which is generated constantly by bases and some forerunner structures), power (which fuels research as well as unlocks the higher levels of the tech tree, generated at either a UNSC power plant or covvie temple) and of course, people (depending on the unit you want to build, you may be limited in how many you can field either by a impossed hard limit, ie in the demo you could only have 3 spartans on the ground at any one time, or by litterally hitting the wall, which I often did. Some units, such as the covvie scarib (Sp) take up 20 people units to operate.)
The Cutsences im wondering about. These are obsurdly high level for a video game, think could be used in a CG movie good. This makes me wonder however as I read in a game mag recently that Microsoft closed down the branch company that made this so I wonder if they spent too much time on the movie portions and skimpt on the actual game play. However having only played the demo I really cant speak towards this yet.
All in all, having seen now several RTS games along similar lines I have to wonder if this is the future of RTS and if the days of say Homeworld 2 are behind us for those who like this genre. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:
Players who post are like stars, there are bright ones and those who are dim.

Ok I have played through both campeign on hard, and skirmish with both sides on hard aswell and I have alot of thoughts about it.
First off, the controller is nowhere near as good as a mouse, but they did make it playable.... This surprised me.
But I dont like their massive cap on troop count, I mean caps should never be in an rts because you can easily limit the production through high resource count.... But outright adding a cap is .
They also made some interesting upgrades for certain units, and the units are somewhat well rounded at their jobs, but I see some of the upgrades as being near useless and others being overly usefull(grenades for inf for instance).
The covenant are FREAKING OVERPOWERED, I mean wraiths/locusts both have shields and they also have decent punchpower, while this seems fine due to their high cost to make their shield prove to be far too strong for my liking especially for the locust which you can also upgrade the recharge rate to the point at which its such a chore to bring them down.
Now all this might even be fine by me(as I believe the UNSC has a better airforce)there is another thing I find problematic, THEIR BASES HAVE SHIELDS ASWELL.... Not just any shield either- I upgraded my bases shield fully and I say that the enemy was about to mac cannon my base, now for the human base a mac cannon fully upgraded(I believe theirs was fully upgraded)can crush your base down to about half armor, but when it hit my bases shields it brought it down to about 60% and it recharged back to full within a minute.... WTF.
Also, the locusts are darn near unstoppable for anything but aircraft if you get enough and all you need to do is simply aim all of them unto the enemy unsc base and it dies within about 30 seconds of OMG BRITHNESS.
All in all a decent game believe it or not, but I wouldnt buy it.... Accept it as a gift for christmas maybe but not buy it.
Lastly, the warning to check with a doctor if you have epilepsy/seizures before playing the game made me laugh my ass off.
