It's less then 2 weeks to go before M10 is supposed to be released, and we've yet to see a working Mac client... It's been a while since I was in game development, but 2 weeks was never enough time to fix anything to any degree of reliability... Does anyone else wonder what they're going to d if they can't get a decently working Mac client? Just being a lil pessimistic...

I believe Cider is the wrapper for the Eve client, put out by Transgaming.
Codeweavers puts out Crossover.

Yes, the clock is ticking and the Mac test client is long overdue. I'm not that worried though as i have several computers I can play EvE on. But in case the Mac client would be shut down and all Mac users booted from EvE due to CCP stopping support of it - can i haz everyonz stuff?

Edited by: Sevarus James on 01/03/2009 01:54:37 So we linux folks lost our official client, switch to wine...and we can test apoc at will. Wonders never cease.
crossover = wine = works with apocrapha.
transgaming= cedega = cider = ccp's partner for the "official mac" emulation client. (as it isn't native regardless.)
wine does work for the mac with the intel based chipsets, and with wine you can run EVE. (how good on a mac I have no idea, but there are still ways to play eve forthcoming regardless of ccp's stance to other operating systems.)
I can tell you that apoc is really going to be either 'awesome' or 'awesome buggy' at this point in the game, as testing with wine is showing the same bugs as the windows folks are seeing...which is still a ton of em'.
The problem for CCP is that for each new build tossed onto sisi, they would have to toss that build over to transgaming who actually build the client...and at the rate they've been updating sisi (several builds this last week alone) I don't actually see (from TG's track record) how they can even begin to promise a mac test client at this point.
Good luck to you guys anyway.

I have to agree......I wouldn't be suprised to see the whole M10 thing delayed. They are going to have to work there butts off to get the Windows client ready, let alone the missing Mac client.

(cough) Yes I start to worry now as well......
Just hope CCP can give us an heads up, before M10. Not just email us on M10, with a 'we are sorry but....' They probably know now whether or not they'll make the Mac deadline or not.

I've gone back to playing on XP instead of using their mac clients (classic or beta premium).
Don't feel bad guys :\ This is what happens when Transgaming gets involved in anything. They promise a port and never deliver a proper one. I've seen them do it for their Linux Cedega engine for years now. I even was subscribed to their service which never worked.
If Transgaming would just go away game companies might start hiring internal talent to do the ports and maintain the ports. It's not very hard. Look at what Blizzard did. They have a Mac client and it's native and works fine.

Transgaming ports are on the Mac side more or less stable. The huge problem with EVE is that it isn't static. Its changing, evolving month by month. So say TG has a working Mac client, along comes a bunch of new code for EVE and breaks the Mac client (again). By the time they've patched that, guess what, the EVE app has changed again breaking the previous patched Mac client (again). A TG port of lets say ' C&C: Red alert 3', might come out somewhat buggy. But, since its a wrapper around an finished product, you can over time go back and fix the bugs without any great difficulty. EVE however is "unfortunately" never ever finished, hence the trouble we are in.
You can't compare Blizzard products with CPP's EVE. EVE is born in, build on, breathing, living on, sweating Microsox out of every vine. The database is Microsox, the client code is Microsox, the server cluster runs Microsox. The only way to have a native Mac client is through a wrapper, which creates the problems as described above. Blizzard games are build, from the ground up, to support multiple OS's. EVE was build with just one platform in mind. That CCP later changed their mind to have Linux/ Mac onboard, doesn't mean they want to, let alone can, rewrite EVE from the ground up just to do it 'teh Blizzard way'.

Say what you will about Blizzard. They consistently made the correct technology decisions when CCP did not. The trouble with the Mac client is just one bad decision on their part.
