I have a minmatar character and heard some of their ships are good for shield tnaking and some are better as armor tanks. Could someone shed some light on what I look for when deciding which way to fit my ship. Also, doesnt armor tanking seem like the best way to go generally because most of the EW modules are mid slots? Thanks

For most Minmatar ships that is the deciding factor. If you are using your mids for e-war then armour tank. If you are using your lows for damage mods then shield tank. A few Minmatar ships have specific bonuses to shield tanking so that may sway your decision.

Remember to read the New Player's Guide to Tanking, which has some hints on this topic :)
Armour tanking is often preferred in RR gangs since only having to remote rep one type of hitpoints makes life easier.

The above advice is good, but it skips over the most basic consideration:
Are there more mid or low slots on the ship?
If there are more lows, you'll definitely want to armor tank it. If there are more mids, you'll probably want to shield tank it, unless you need them all for EW.

I have a drake and I shield tank.
Also, I love how shield is repaired for free while armor got awesome costs. So you "need" to fit an armor repairer every now and then and lots of time is wasted. (unless you got it perma-fitted which also sucks!!)

Depends actually. I do see some good Minmatar ships give Shield bonus though. So do things accordingly i guess. All up to ya.

If you're running an active armor tank you'll always have at least one armor rep running. And armor is repaired for free as long as you run your armor rep for a few cycles after a mission.
Armor rep is simply the armor equivalent of a shield booster and there are plenty of shield tanking ships that use shield boosters. The natural regen of shields is nice though.

Basically if the ship has more med slots then low, and has higher base shield hitpoints then armor, it's beggin to be shield tanked. Opposite, armor tanked.
Thing is, when you use your med slots for tank, you are missing out on the PVP unless you have 5+ med slots. Most PVP setups include AB/MWD, web and scram.. That takes out 3 slots.
Thats why most ships considered PVP oriented are armor tanked. Excluding the drake, ofc.. Hehe
