Those panels installed on a lot of ships such as Thrasher, Maelstrom, Tempest and the Hurricanes oars.
What function do those panels serve?

There are multiple alternatives. The one I like best is that they are radiators to get rid of the extra heat generated by the ship's systems. (Even if the actual particles in space are very cold, since there exist an effective vacuum the surrounding space doesn't conduct heat, and therefore objects are cooled down only by radiating heat. That is assuming that the cluster doesn't exist in "fluid space".)

I hadn't considered the radiator theory before, but it sounds very reasonable. I personally always took them for sensor arrays or similar.
A few people have tried to explain them as solar panels, but given the power sources we already have and the distances at which we frequently find ourselves from stellar objects, this doesn't strike me as particularly likely. --

There was never a real explanation for the many less functional bits on Eve Starships, still it could be that the Wings have something to do Shield Generators. The Minmatar are at least partial Shield Tankers and the Wings are just the Shield Emitters of the Ship, using a less advanced but very reliable Technology.

Modern warships have a similar look in the superstructure area. These ships use a type of radar arrangement called "phased array". Reminds me very much of Minmatar. Works for me

given how much those things increase the surface area of the ships, I'd have to say radiators. keeping a starship cool is very difficult - I reckon most of the ships in EVE vent heat via their plasma exhausts (the engine trailes) but maybe the Minmatar decided they preferred an approach which gave them more ship to bolt sensor arrays and electronics systems to. - Verin "Stitcher" Hakatain. |

One of the wierder ideas I've come across is that the 'wingy bits' serve as particle collectors, capturing thin interstellar particles to be shot out via the plasma thrusters.
You would probably need a LOT more surface area (take a look at some of the RL theoretical Bussard Ramjet ships - their collectors are HUGE compared to those on Minmatar ships) but it does explain why only Minmatar ships have wingy parts. ----------------------------------------------
Say "Amarr ships suk, lol." I dare you.

ive somewhat considered Solar panels as an option too, we might have fusion but i wouldnt rule out solar with how bright space is in EVE lol.

if u look at the sabre i would say that they where solar panels to power the showers in the messes

I vote that they are for ship cooling. Here's why:
Minmatar ships run on nuclear fission reactors, which generate a lot of heat. The coolant is often very hot, and needs to be pumped around/pressurized to be kept a liquid(because a gas coolant would probably not work very well, I imagine.)
I remember once being told at space camp that you can cool water in space by having it pumped around a tube that is exposed to space- as long as it is kept moving, it won't freeze.
The 'frames' for the sail-things on Minnie ships are probably cooling pipes, and the space in between seems like it would be convenient to fill in with solar paneling to recharge those capacitors without shielding/atmosphere, sunlight in space can apparently heat things pretty nicely if you are directly in it. The masts of the sail would also provide a convenient system for attaching water heating/cooling pipes for general life support.

Ship cooling seems like a good possibility.
I always though that the "wingy" bits were remains from when the Minmatars were restricted more to atmospheric flight.

Patch notes seem to refer to them as sails. Maybe in the 'liquid space' model that EVE seems to adhere to they are used to keep the thing balanced in warp?

Edited by: Camperific on 12/03/2009 00:14:53 The solar panel looking things are actually the Shield emmiters. This is why you see them on ships such as the Jaguar which are shield tankers. This was discussed recently in general discusion btw.
Edit-Also i think the reason for them looking like mirror's is because they were designed originaly to repel light type weapons by reflecting the beam (i.e lasers)
