I use the Ombey maps right now and also dotlan from time to time ( alot of cool data on dotlan ), but this seems pretty good.
Anyone own this and love it? hate it?

i have copies of both editions of the strategic maps (the first one i bought got some minor "Dog damage" so I later bought the EA edition) and i really like them a lot - i always have one on hand and it's proven extremely handy on a few occasions.
to be honest, in terms of style and layout and icons, i prefer Ombey's maps, but if the money is inconsequential to you or if you're buying it just because you want a copy, it's definitely a cool thing to own.

Edited by: Captain Politics on 04/03/2009 14:30:19 I like both maps... But I like the fact that the is a real book in colors and not just some **** you printed out from the interwebs...
If you like shiny things and have money to blow, go for it. If you are dead-poor and don't like shiny stuff, stick with the 2-d ombey map.

I love Ombey's maps, plain and simple. I'd love to get the guy to sign my Ibis.
I don't need the book, or paper. I download the most recent digital copy and view it in my second screen, and I don't feel I'm missing out on anything.
I've never purchased the Strategic maps - I see no need as long as Ombey does his thing, but that doesn't automatically make me an anti-Strategic map opponent. I can see that some EVE fans, just have to have their warez, and I'm sure glossy strategic maps fill that niche.
.. just not for me.

Edited by: Ragnar Foulberg on 04/03/2009 18:20:30 I don't use mine very much. Honestly, I just bought mine because it looked like a cool idea. However... now I'm starting to use them and finding them useful, so I'm glad I bought the second edition. It does come in handy at times.
Plus it's cool to have EVE stuff lying around on my desk. Impresses visitors when they come into my office/game room.

i like it, but i'm also a sucker for feelies and an information junkie. i still use the book maps when navigating here and there (specially for finding detours around crappy 0.0 chokepoints), but if i have time to alt tab to a browser, i prefer dotlan for the up-to-the-hour information

Sad news (although I'm glad he's still going to update his most useful maps)!

His comment is older than that news. But i must agree that is "I may update them" not "I will update them".

you can get a free 'patch'
they email a file which you print onto sticky label type paper and then you apply the patch manually Also, I believe that you should join Rancer Defence Force. It's cool.

I never understood how someone could pay money for something what he/she could get for free in practically the same quality, but more up to date, from Ombey. The strategic maps (from what I have seen from advertising) do not contain more information then Ombey's maps. If I wanted them printed out, I would just print Ombey's maps out. The Dotlan maps however are a true improvement, since they add a mass of additional - and often useful - information. I find myself using the Dotlan maps over Ombey's maps more and more often.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I should clear up the confusion. I *will* keep updating the maps, but releases will be far less often for the time being. As it is, they're kind of bi-monthly. Any big changes will necessitate a quick release, but for just outpost updates, they can wait :)

Glad to hear you're interested ShadowandLight. Every week I get new emails from players who say they love the book/it's roxor/omg i love it.
The worst comment I ever got (once) was that it was a beautiful object, but only marginally more useful than on-screen PDF maps.
As for the EVE universe changing almost nothing changes that often (despite popular forum belief). Players build new outposts, which is about it (There are stickers with the book to mark new outposts).

Sounds like a lot of effort for this at $19.95.
IME which map you use is often a religious experience - people tend to get attached to one type or the other. Personally, I prefer the In-game map, which is why the book was made - to keep the orientation whether you look at screen or print.
