Hi, I'm planning on deploying a number of towers in empire for R+D, mainly 2 large 1DG med.
I'm just wondering which is the best tower for R+D? to get a decent amount of labs + some self defence? are there any that shine through or are they all much alike? thanks.

Any tower that has the CPU to support however many labs you want.
When you have decided on size, look for faction towers as there is quite a bit of fuel-money to be saved if it's for an extended period.

Last time I checked the numbers you save about 10% of the marginal cost of a faction control tower in fuel each month. So if your current ISK is making under 10% a month, go faction, otherwise, just spend more on things that make more than 10% a month.

go to faction is not only fuel gain but also less refuel since fuel cargo is same size you have to refuel it 10% less time or more ;) -- Scoopex CEO Scoopex is Recruting |

This.
About... six months ago, I think? I did the actual numbers using Jita pricing and compared a DG medium tower to the normal Caldari one. At full load for them both, it takes about 1.5 months for the initial increased cost to be made back. That is to say, while it costs more up front for the DG medium tower, in a month and a half you'll have saved enough on fuel to have broken even on your investment, and after that you're saving ISK. This is, of course, ignoring some of the other bonuses for going with a DG tower like a bit more shield HP...

It depends on the tower. The price difference for medium towers is small compared to the fuel costs, so a faction tower pays off quiet quickly. If you look at large towers, a regular costs 300m, a faction one 800m - 1b ... to get the difference in through fuel costs it takes some while ;-)

Caldari, Guristas or Dread Guristas are the best for R&D because it is CPU bound and they have the most CPU for their size.
The fuel savings from especially small and large faction towers is not so much worth it in isk terms, but you have to refuel less often plus if the tower lives, you've still pretty much retained that capital value anyway.

Edited by: Typhado3 on 07/03/2009 08:42:08 caldari are best at pure research
minmatar are second but are a good option due to their ability to fit lots of labs and lots of guns at the same time. a bunch of XL projectile batteries are a good way to scare off any wannabe pirates from war decing your research corp.

I personally use an Amarr tower as my 2 research charcter can only fill so many slots and i just fit the rest defence.
if you can use mypos (program somewhere under the resourse sticky) get as many labs as you want and then pick a tower that fits fill teh rest for defence

Anythig larger then medium guns are for dreads, youre better off dropping the xl and putting in a couple more mediums.
But ya, minmatar with a lot of artys is a mean one.

Sorry if this is a noob question, do you have to be and/or create a Corp to put up a POS? Or can they be put up as a privately own structure?
Thank you.

Tower are launched for corp and need corp standing if in empire or lowsec.

More precisely you have to be in a corp and have the roles within that corp, POS's are only owned by corps. You need standing for 0.4 to 0.7, you don't for 0.3 and lower. You can never anchor in 0.8 or higher.

Do you pay 700mil for 1.5 months of fuel? No, you don't, so you couldn't possibly save 700mil in fuel costs in 1.5 months, even if DG towers used no fuel.
Looking at this, 20 days of fuel runs you 100mil, so a month is 150mil. The premium for a DG tower is 700mil and they save you about 20%, or 30mil, worth of fuel per month. This is a 4.1% rate of return, which is decent but nothing amazing for a 700mil investment.
Furthermore you have 700mil of additional assets at risk if your POS is attacked.
