the whole illegal downloading is stealing thing...
it kinda is. Like, if i download a movie without paying for it, thats the same as if i walked into walmart, grabbed a DVD, and left the store without paying for it. like actual stealing....
i think my world has just been rocked

By most standards, my collection is small, and it is far from being worth $200.

at $1 per track... I'd have to pay up roughly $12000. I don't like that idea. :P

Actually, it kind of is like you walking into a store, grabbing one of the DVDs that run on the showcase machines while nobody's around to be bothered by it, plugging it into your laptop and making a copy of it, then putting it back
OR
it's like watching the movie on the showcase machine from start to finish without paying
OR
it's like seeing the movie run on TV, recording it, and watching it later

If a movie is good enough to see in theaters I'll go see it. Or go rent it.
The last thing I downloaded was "The Wrestler". Why? It looked good, it wasn't showing in my town, and I wasn't about to wait for it to come onto dvd.
Music is the same way. A CD has what, 1.5-2 hours of music on it? And I'm going to pay 20 bucks for that amount of time? F*** that. I'll fork over 35-70 bucks for a live concert if the band is worth it, but if it's some overproduced piece of garbage that sounds good on my computer, but terrible live, oh you bet your ass I'm not paying for it.
Keep in mind, GOOD BANDS will still make gobs of money if they are worth a crap. It's nice to see artists that are worth a crap making it because their live performances are legit and making all kinds of awesome noise.
And who downloads music anymore? Haven't you discovered pandora yet? Stop, hammer time. |

It's not whether it's stealing or not, piracy (yarr!) or not.
It's whether you actually give a shit enough to bother trying to define it.
I don't.
Take what you want, give nothin' back.

I like those anti-piracy ads at the start of DVDs. They make me feel that if I were to hypothetically download movies then all kinds of other exciting crime would be within my grasp.

I understand (don't agree though) why people pirate software/music/games... but I'll never understand why people are PROUD of it. You're stealing something, robbing someone of money, and its NOT HARD. None of it's something to be proud of.
At least bank robbers have to put effort into it...

Not quite.
Watching a movie on TV and recording is legally considered "time shifting" - you aren't stealing anything, because you are watching something that you were already allowed to watch on your own equipment. RIAA and friends lost that battle awhile ago, which is what made VCRs so popular, and also why DVRs are so popular today.
Grabbing a DVD from a showcase machine is still stealing, although you are returning it after you are done with it. That would be the same as going to a video rental store and stealing a rental video, then returning it later.
Also, it's not the same as watching a movie on the show case machine from start to finish, because the store which owns the show case machine has *probably* gotten the proper license the display the movie in public.
Downloading a movie is like buying a book, and photocopying the contents and giving the contents to a friend. Or like burning a copy of a music CD and giving it to someone else. It is not physical theft, because no physical property is being stolen. Instead it is considered "copyright infringement", because you have not been given permission to copy the intellectual property by the owner. The only thing that is being moved, are abstract concepts and ideas.

Funny thing is that sometimes companies use illegal cracks to fix their buggy game(happened with Ubisoft, can't remember the name of the game though).

For it to be stealing they would have had to lose something. I'm sure they'd argue all day about how they lost a potential sale and make some figure up at the end of the year about how much they lost to it; but really ...

I agree with akita.
Its not the consumers fault that the companies refuse to get with the times........ oh wait, it IS THE CONSUMERS FAULT.
Consumers continue buying products from companies that allow their quality to suck, their programming to suck, and refuse to use profits to adapt to new market conditions. These same companies sue torrent sites for ungodly amounts of money rather then simply investing a little bit of their existing profits to make piracy nigh impossible.
It CAN be done, it is just a matter of hiring the right people, and getting to work. The problem is that all companies care about anymore is making huge sums of money and paying their execs insane amounts of money.
Are there CEOS out there worth 15 million dollars? Yes. But most of the CEO's we have right now are not worth their salt, and certainly not worth their paycheck. |

Any content protection mechanism which does not render the protected content unusable can be broken with enough time and resources. "There is no problem which can not be solved through sufficient application of brute force and ignorance."
