Edited by: TimMc on 09/03/2009 17:15:44 Had a blu ray drive on my pc for a while, but today finally went and bought a pair of films to watch on it.
However, no joy playing it on WMP. What software/drivers do I need to watch films off it? Any additional hardware that is absolutely necessary? At this moment using a 23" LCD, which should work right?
Edit: oh yeah its on vista before anyone asks.

WMP is simply not compatible with Blu-ray I'm afraid, and there is no codec to make it work. I too have recently embraced blu-rays on my PC and fortunately my blu-ray drive came with Cyberlink's PowerDVD Ultra, which can do Blu-ray [and HD-DVD lol] very nicely. Unfortunately, only Power-DVD's Ultra edition, which costs US$100 or GBú80, is the only version that runs Blu-ray! You can find it here.
Corel has WinDVD 9, which is less feature-filled than PowerDVD 9 but costs a "mere" $80. It stil admirably does the job of playing blu-ray discs with ease. You can find it here.
I'm not aware of any free options or whether WMP Vista has since been made blu-ray capable, but last time I checked it's only able to play HD-DVDs, which are of course redundant. Shop around though. -----

I think that also comes free with high priced graphics cards.

@ Eran - Would you be suggesting there's a format out there which VLC can't play? -------------

I use Total Media Theatre Pro from ArcSoft which costs $60. Blu-Rays look great. Unfortunately there are no free blu-ray codecs and you'll have to bite the nail and buy one of these softwares.

/me points to raw blue ray... Not working over here, just checked. But whether it is due to a lack of CPU power (I usualy decode on GPU, CPU works but it gets laggy on quick moving screen) or just support I can't tell. _

Thanks I've "acquired" PowerDVD 8 which works for blu rays. 300 looks sexy in High Def (yes I know... dont judge).
