I dont stay up on the forums becuase I dont have time to read those details. One thing i had heard is that CCP was going to try and make eve run more effectively on older machines. But I see today, that first they took away the mac minis, and now they have taken away the laptops. I play with my kid, and have two accounts of my own. Now only one of us can play. Ridiculous!

Edited by: Grady Punk2 on 10/03/2009 19:59:54 Sorry, my Mac inferiority complex got in the way for a minute while I am waiting for this thing to figure out if it will download or not.
The Laptop in question is a Macbook 4,1 intel core 2 duo.
Helpful replies gratefully accepted.

No problem.
But your still falling short on the details.
There are currently 5 Macbook lines.
1: White Macbook 13" 2: Aluminium Macbook 13" 3: Aluminium Macbook Pro 15" (My personal sweet thang here) 4: Aluminium Macbook Pro 17" (Isnanity) 5: Macbook Air
If you have an older Macbook... as of last year.. better be a Macbook Aluinium or Pro... or your flat out of luck.
AFAIK... Only those Macs that have Nvidia GPU's can play EVE Online.
Those that don't... won't.
ATI maybe... but only if its a rather good one. Even then its not nearly as good as Nvidia.
Intel Graphics Chip may...or may not work... but I'm not making any bets.
<--- Apple Support Professional/Technical Coordinator
CCP made it clear... you need a bloody good GPU to get anywhere as of today... or you won't get anywhere at all. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

Yes...but since it is "not supported," do you suppose that can be fixed? If not it is probably bye bye for at least one of my long and hard worked for toons.

Try resetting the preferences and clearing the cache manually... can't remember where the files are stored at.
Or you can just sit tight and wait for them to update it.
Make sure your running the current OS-X and all the updates are applied. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

Hi. Since you're a Mac technician, any idea if a "ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT" will run the game fine?

If your on an Intel Mac... running OS-X Leopard... odds are very much in your favor.
The trick is having a relatively good GPU that can handle the new shadders.
Someones already pointed out they can barely run on Intel's GPU's... if not just fine (something I didn't expect... may try my mac mini out for grins).
Keep in mind I've not run EVE Online on anything but the fancy MBP with Nvidia GPU's 8 O )
But honestly.... you SHOULD be able to. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

Nvidia and ATI graphics chipsets should be able to run EVE Online. Older cards, especially those with less RAM (i.e. 128Mb) will have to reduce graphics quality in order to get acceptable framerates. The Intel graphics chipsets are unfortunately not officially supported at this point. We did get EVE to run on a first generation Mac Mini last night but it only ran at 1024x768 with lowest possible settings. I really wouldn't recommend it for combat.

Max out the ram on your Mac....
Low VRAM means dipping into local memory.... if you don't have at least 2 GB... expect it to be tight.
Shoot for 4GB for better results. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

Is it possible to replace the GPU with one better on an iMac?

No.. sorry.
GPU is integrated with the logic board (Motherboard).
Go for 4GB if things aren't working out... or plan on replacing it with the newer Nvidia GPU based iMac's
One of the reasons Apple threw ATI out on there ass was for the lack of graphics throughput not to mention overall performance was very...very poor. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

Officially... no.
Unofficially.... yeah... but...good luck finding a replacement board.
This is not the sort of thing you can expect to find or hear about for a few more years yet.
And doing so without experience or the propper tools... could be hazzardous to your mac.
Not to mention voiding the warranty on your mac.
Such an attempt is ill advised. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

Macbook Pro 15" Aluminum 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo 2 Dual Core 4GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 9400M Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT (Currently Engaged )
Average Core Temp 60 Degrees C with the fans maxed out at 6200 RPM (need to tie down... sounds like a hovercraft X O D )
So yeah... updated it... no problem... no patch so I installed fresh from the server... all 2 GB of it.
Graphics are stunning... got them maxed out.
Only crashed once... was messing around in an Level 2 Angel Cartel Complex in high sec.
Don't know why it crashed... but looking at Console.. looks like the cider engine is spraying memory leak garbage all over hell. (God I hate this windows crap coding... GO NATIVE CCP! PLEASE!)
I may end up backing down on the graphics settings... but I think the bulk of your problems are going to originate in the following areas:
RAM - You should have a minimum of 2GB... but max it out if you can... you won't be able to run full out. Video - Best you can get your hands on... don't expect to be able to run the best settings either wise.
its not smooth... tends to jitter every so often.... but I've not had a chance to really break it in. But.. its tolerable.. so long as it doesn't crash.
I must say... I'm very... impressed.
Now about removing the 200 lines of Console log trashing up my computer >.>; =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

So, my question is; Will my MacBookPro 15", Intel Core Duo, 2GHz 2 GB, With a ATI Radeon X1600 VRAM 128 MB, run this new upgrade or, am I no longer an EVE player?

That depends... if you max out the ram you might be surprised.
as I said before... low VRAM means your dipping into the local RAM pool.
If you fall short.. your gonna be in trouble.
Only way to find out is to give it a shot and see what happens. =============== CEO of Clan Shadow Cadre www.shadowcadre.com ===============

It seems people are struggling to get acceptable frame rates on most Radeon Macs, namely X1600 256 MB MBPs and 2400/2600HD iMacs ùáon lowest settings. --

Stick to BootCamp/Windows for now. I have almost the same config (256 MB VRAM instead of 128) and EVE barely runs on lowest settings. |

Only online for an hour (and mostly sightseeing :-) but seems to work fine on...
MacBook 13.3" 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM Intel GMA 950 Video with 64MB VRAM
External 1280 x 1024 display - have not tried on 13" screen.
highest video settings I can get are Shader: medium, Texture: high which is more than I expected. Don't know how those would handle fleets etc but looked good sitting outside the station watching the traffic come out (seemed to be a popular pastime!).
I too had the annoyance of the initial download problem but that was immediately forgotten when the intro screen came up. Well done CCP, I'm looking forward to further sightseeing
