Edited by: Slade Trillgon on 10/03/2009 23:55:29 I believe the Agony clan has about 18 guys in at this point. The word is that it is a little frustrating, to be expected, but fun none the less.
I want to get up with them, but I do not even get on much to fight for my brothers and sisters so I do not think that I will jump in before I get a new computer.

its a fairly fun game, but speed hackers are running riot at the mo
Still needs alot of stuff ironing out yet, but it could have potential, even after such a ropey launch.

Edited by: Crumplecorn on 11/03/2009 09:52:18 From their forums it seems that production is: Utterly linear, with only a small number of different materials Chance based A click-click-click grind
Also, I get the impression that resource gathering is the same.
So glorified FPS at the moment, and no reason to leave EVE if you aren't a UT in Space player.
I would sign up to see for myself, but at Ç50 for the first month with the game having technical, software and apparently even design issues, I'll stick to hearsay from the forum. -

It's thoroughly strange that they haven't updated their website since 22 Jan.
Even launch day wasn't worth a news item? Oh, right.

Edited by: mingeta dong on 11/03/2009 13:16:37 Edited by: mingeta dong on 11/03/2009 13:10:31 I've been in for a week, needs more development of course (no MMO is perfect) but it's fun. Joined a clan of approx 40 ppl with more waiting to get copies of the game.
Here's what I've found so far:
UI is from the 1990's, in-game maps don't work, loading the journal takes so long I don't bother anymore. Character options/graphics suck, the environment itself is quite nice with loads of places to discover. The launch was botched, and now we have to queue up to 20mins to get into the game.
PvP: Good fun, stealth, planning, tactics work and combat seems to be based around raw DPS in the form of 2 handed melee weapons, then ranged archers, spell casting seems less effective at the lower skill levels most people have at the mo. The effectiveness of target calling diminishes the scrappier and close the battle is taking place, there's no targeting anyway so unlike EvE you can't just run down a list of names. I like it. Sieging is broken though, if you have a city now youÆre keeping it until the problems are fixed.
PvE: Hard! I can't solo mid level mobs, and at the moment I don't want to roll out in my best gear to do this so it's tough even with a few mates along. I'm still exploring but i've found some nice spawns and a few dungons. Anyway, it's more fun to sneak up on people farming spawns and take all their stuff.
Gathering: Dull dull dull....
Crafting: Need to buy skills to do anything useful, even then you have to skill up to get access to mediocre gear which involves more of the dull gathering. Market, lol what market? ItÆs reduced to Jita like spam in chat channels.
My only MMO experience before this is EVE, so when I see universal banks and /return to bindstone commands (you and your gear) it doesn't seem as hardcore as the player base would like to believe as you can fast travel back to a fixed location.
In all, for me, despite the problems it's fun at the moment. I'm not sure if it'll keep my attention focused as much as EVE has. Universal banks need to go and a localised market system needs to be implemented, thereÆs no logistics involved at the moment and as a result little risk being taken. The phrase 'paid beta' is banded around quite a lot, it can feel that way sometimes.
Edit: I believe the hackers are being dealt with, and the macro users who've been exploiting the safe areas are as well, I had positive feed back from a GM when I identified a couple. The macro gatherers have been a nice source of materials for me

tl;dr If you aren't sure whether or not you'll enjoy Darkfall from what you read/heard/saw then I'd wait a month before trying it.
Slow Start I've been playing Darkfall for about 2 1/2 weeks now (since they launched the pre-orders). Darkfall probably has had / is having the worst launch of any promising MMO to date. Aventurine is an amateur company with Darkfall being their first game (CCP was once there) and I feel sorry for them about all the problems they're having that has made Darkfall's launch pretty poor. Despite this, Darkfall has been a fun game to play and has a lot of potential once Aventurine can fix the slow start they're having.
The Hardest Part: Buying the Game Buying the game is the hardest/most frustrating part since they've had to throttle the number of copies they sell each day as they weren't prepared to deal with so many subscribers initially. Once you're in, its a great game.
Game Stability Runs smooth for me though sometimes my friends have lost connections (might be an issue with 64-bit XP)and despite having 180-200 ping from the US, the game is very much playable and I don't notice the lag. It's certainly much better than what I'd expect from ping that high.
Mobs desynch sometimes and keep running in one direction but people just back off a bit and wait a few seconds till they resynch and then we continue to wail on them and kill them.
Aside from more mob desynchs/lag (which really isn't bothersome) due to increased server population (they really need to get a 2nd server up) I can't really think of any bugs or anything. Its good so far as stability is concerned.
Game Balancing They haven't done any balancing yet (most magic really sucks right now and some weapons and weapon skills need tweaking) but that's because they're just struggling right now to be able to handle the number of people that want to play Darkfall and get to the point where they can safely open up the store 24/7. It's not something that stops you at all from having fun in combat (unless you wanted to be a pure mage kind of character).
Right now, Polearms and Greatswords are the flavor of the month mostly for their long reach and arrows are very powerful for hitting at range.
The mix of PVP and PVE PVP and PVE in Darkfall are not two completely separate game play aspects to the same degree that they are in EVE. Often, PVE can lead to PVP and PVP and lead to PVE. For example, people will be killing goblins near a town when a raiding party will swing by and attack them. Sometimes at first, people won't realize they're being attacked by players in addition to the mobs but either way they fight back or others nearby hear the sounds of fighting and run in to fight. I remember I was just relaxing one evening doing some logging to craft arrows (since I had run out) and I heard the sounds of Mahirim players fighting and people dieing and I immediately rushed out (along with a few other people) to fight and try to kill people and take their good loot! In general there's a lot more willingness or desire to fight than there is in EVE.
Less ganks, more fights I see a lot more fights and less ganks than in EVE. Probably because pvp in Darkfall has a lot less to do with numbers and equipment than actually skill. Equipment still matters but its not like the difference between a Vexor and an Ishtar kind of difference. Player skill matters most and with friendly fire, more numbers doesn't mean win if you're hitting your own teammates while trying to kill the other guys. Anyway, there's a lot more "fighting" and less "ganking" in Darkfall which is very fun.
Engaging PVE The PVE in Darkfall is also much more engaging than EVE. It's like "target the red cross; activate guns; wait for rat to die. Killing mobs is more active than in EVE

Dealing with Macro'rs and speed hackers There were some problems with speed hacking the last week but Aventurine has really cracked down on aggressively detecting 3rd party programs and banning accounts w/out warning. I've never seen a speed hacker for myself, but I know I don't see any more threads complaining about speed hackers on the forums.
The GMs also crack down on macroing much more so than CCP. GMs will respond to players reports of macroing and will find people that have been mining/logging for a while and convo them to find out of they are really there or if they're afk macroing. As long as you respond and show you aren't afk macro'ing then everything is cool and the GM moves on his way. If you're found afk macro'ing then you're kicked with a warning and 2nd offence = ban.

They only had one server for a sharded game? That's just bad planning.
I know it's a small company, but surely they were monitoring the hype on the blogosphere and knew that many people were excited about the game. It's just unimaginable that in 2009 a company can be so unprepared for the launch of their game.

I have the creeping suspicion that the whole availability issue is a marketing ploy, to rise the hype level even further.

I've seen very little advertising at all outside of few select websites.
The damn thing has been building hype for so long that it's a wonder it has not collapsed into itself! And now they are keeping the hype up and at the same time cashing in on it. It's either genius or so stupid it just could not fail.

Very true about it's singularity-spawning advertising, but the sites that I've visited which featured it were mainly euro, so I stand behind my original statement, which only makes it worse.
So they've done a massive amount of advertising on mainly Euro sites. Despite this (only from and advertiser's point of view) there's been overwhelming popularity for it. Thus it's REALLY stupid that they didn't expect a larger user-base than they received, and that was pretty whopping big, by all accounts.

Oh shush!
US is (still) one of the largest consumer markets on this planet with most money and least fiscal discipline. There is no good reason to not try to sell stuff to them.

(Lets ruin the quote pyramid, shall we? )
Were these Euro sites regional or national? Either way, my opinion is that they are either deviously smart or incredibly incompetent. I'm leaning towards the former. I believe that what's happening is happening by design.

A misunderstanding perhaps? I don't think I talked about either zerging or tactics. As far as rogue/assassins, not really. There is no cloak/invisibility spell/skill in Darkfall so sneaking up on someone is all on your ability to use the terrain, move quietly and catch someone off guard. Even so, its not a huge thing because people can sprint away too as there aren't any snares or root skills to speak of.
I was mining for material to make arrows (I had run out) when a Mahirim jumped me, I jumped in the water and he chased. I pulled out my knives and used Knockback Knives to punt him away from me. I then pulled out my bow and started shooting him. He swam to shore and I gave chase but had to stop my pursuit when I ran out of arrows (why I was mining in the first place ).
So yeah, there's no recon ships hunting ratters equivalent in Darkfall. What's popular is 2-5 man raiding parties all on mounts where they can run down people easier. Even then though, you can still kill their mounts from underneath them.
Last night 3 Orks on Death Pigs were chasing one of our guys who then led one of them too close to a Guard tower. The Guard tower pelted him hard and he ran away out of range, but too late to get away from two of us on foot that took him down with a mana missile kill shot in the back and gave me my first (and free) mount along with some nice high rank gear.

The forest graphics in the vid posted above (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FicFVAMyZLo&feature=related) was quite OK, but the graphics from the battle with the goons looked like Wolfenstein 3D from the early 90's...
There seems to be great differences in terms of graphics in different areas. Sever Aldaria, you made some good posts about the game. Almost makes me want to try it. :)

After looking at a great number of vids on this game the first thing that comes to mind is the interface and graphics and effects look dated by about a decade. I was interested in the ideas of the game a couple years ago so this is a bummer.
If they update the game from a fantasy version of Anarchy Online I might be interested again.
