Wat have ye boys done to the directional scanner?
This is all I's can find in the patch notes regarding the scanner:
Quote: - Secure audit log containers will now display properly on a directional scan if they are in space and in range. - Energy neutralizing batteries will now display properly on a directional scan if they are in space and in range.
And by the looks of it, there's been minor cosmetic changes to the interface which makes it LESS readable.
As to the functionality - it don't show regular cans any more, and it don't show ship wrecks any more. Since these are registered as "no workaround yet" on the acknowledged issues thread, I's assume that is not intentional.
Also, now you can't right click on the ships on scanner to quickly check slot layout, cargo capacity, whatever. Nice improvement.
Well here's what me ma used to say about the art of programming - she was a real pro at programming me pa's subconscious:
DO NOT FIX WHAT IS NOT BROKEN
Everytime ye boys roll a new patch, there seems to be at least a couple aspects of the game which justifies me reminding yous all about this pro tip. And I get laughed at by other players, and ignored by the officials. Sure it is simple enough rule, but it is a pro tip mates, pro it is.
I gets it there might be lots of little glitches and bugs when rolling a new patch on a wide multiuser platform, and I'm totally fine with that. I just don't get why we have to pay you to break things that are working, for no apparent reason.
Surely the new scanning system is a seperate module of code from the directional scanner code?
Surely the cosmetic remake of making the results less readable should not have affected how the directional scanner works?
Surely trying to add audit log containers or neutralising batteries to the results is not that complicated?
At least, surely that shouldn't have messed up what was already included in the results?
I assume all the answers to the above are positive, it's just plain coding norm. If that's not how ye boys write code, I rest me case and stfu now.
But I honestly believe someone tried to rewrite the functionality of the scanner, prolly just for the kicks of it. Well, kudos to ye, boy.
Just next time, remember me ma's pro tip -
DO NOT FIX WHAT IS NOT BROKEN, FOR FECKS SAKE
Thank you.

Its kind of hard to take seriously suggestions meant for programmers that substitute "fer yer" for "For your".
Before mastering C or C++, mastering English is a necessary precondition.
No offense.

While he didn't exactly present it very well, he's right.
Messing with the Directional Scanner (that was already perfect), only to mess it up, is one of the worst moves CCP has made. ___________________

I have to object strongly here. I'm a software engineer myself. And, when working with well educated English majors with Masters Degrees in Journalism handling technical documentation...
The old-and-busted grammar rules, which are modernly incorrect mind you, say that punctuation is within quotation at the end of a sentence; so here's your password, good luck, "z0mg!bbQ."
Try telling that punctuation goes outside of the quotes to someone so proud of his Masters Degree in English from some prestigious education institution. Might as well try to sell a washing machine to the brick wall over there.
While it's true, some of these so-called English majors attempt to reword the phrase so that quotations aren't at the end or to use italics (which is traditionally more reserved for foreign language like Latin)... for a two-thousand page technical manual this is harder done than said for every case.
Bottom line is they are wrong. And while they might have a lot of education in regards to base linguistics and grammar of the language itself, I have yet to see any lingual major other than Law School, cator to, or even educate the student on exceptions or nuances found in myriad fields of interests. General grammar doesn't bode well with any advanced subject, aside from writing a classical novel or newspaper column.

Exactly my point, that's why I addressed the programming team. Apparently, there is no design changes to the directional scanner, apart from adding a couple object types to result set.
The second part of yer statement I completely disagree, but I won't argue about yer opinion. It is yer opinion after all.

None taken. As a side note, I have friends who are quite proficient in C or pretty much any other language for that matter, and who don't speak English at all. I don't know how ye's came upon that conclusion, but again, it's yer opinion and I have no intention of arguing about it.

Probably because you're attempting to type in English. If you were typing in any other language, that would be another story.
But you're not.
In any case, you can't know what is and what isn't complicated in the code without actually looking at the code. Even the easiest solutions can be obfuscated in the most horrible and disasterous ways.
I suspect that since they were changing the probe system and since directional scanning is tied in indirectly with probing, that they went ahead and changed the interface of both in an attempt to make it more user friendly. But who knows.
Just sit back and relax, bugs will be fixed in a future patch as they always are.

Every programmer knows you put code that accomplishes similar things in the same module and call it from the different places it is used. Not doing that will create more code, which makes the software harder to maintain.
It is more then likely scanning will have some common code for both scanner systems, and something went wrong when refactoring it. Stuff like that happens.

This is the biggest pile of steaming misconceptions I have ever seen. I work with software devs all day...and trust me, most of them can barely manage to speak English in the first place. None of them can write worth a damn. I know because it's my job to translate their design documentation gibberish into something people can understand.

I honestly do not see any similarities between the functioning of the directional scanner and the new probing scan or the old probing scan.
The directional scanner is based on your ships viewpoint, with adjustable angle of scan.
Probe scanning covers 360 degrees and involves whole other parameters like strength of signal, related skills, positioning in relation to other probes you launched in system etc.
I hardly believe they actually share any code.

Call me crazy, but I like the new look on the dir-scanner. Alot MORE readable now than it was, and you can see a large number of objects in the dir-scan search result list without having to scroll like mad or use a nanometer to adjust the columns in the list perfectly.
I like it.
As for wrecks and cans, I guess that would be a problem if I actually looked for wrecks and cans. I tend to look for ships tho :P

I also find the new scanner to be just fine. As far as cans and wrecks I'm sure it will be fixed soon enough.

Hmm I smell an American English quotation rules state that punctuation is to come outside the quote. For some reason America decided to go for punctuation inside quotation marks strange I know, just tell them to stop using Americanised English and use proper english

But they hosed sorting on the directional scanner! Try sorting by distance, and then hit the scan button again. Fail.

Revery Directional Scanner back to EXACTLY how it used to be, it was one of the few things that worked really well, and as the OP says, DIDN'T NEED FIXING!

Hahha
Yea I forgot about the sorting failure..
I'd soo love to hear an official explanation as to why the directional scanner interface does not remember column sorting after the patch, since it sorted perfectly before the patch.
Just what exactly did ye boys change that broke the sorting? Please?
