After many many attempts i've finally got Eve installed on my comp. Took a bit of work but I got there in the end. If I tell you exactly what I did, it may work for you:
First I deleted ALL traces of Eve off my computer. I deleted the old ccp folder in program files, deleted Eve folder in documents and settings and deleted the Eve folder in document and setting/*yourname*/application data (you must have 'show hidden files and folders' enabled)
I then REBOOTED my computer. (I dont know why, but I think that it worked as ive tried all of this before and failed. Rebooting is one of the different things I did from before.)
I then dl'ed the FULL client for manual install - full client
I copied the client onto all 3 of my drives (no idea why, probably not important but i had visions of messing with the files to see what was corrupt and what wasnt) into folders marked Eve.
I then opened my 7-zip file manager (http://www.7-zip.org/) and pointed it to one of the folders. Added the client and pressed 'extract'. This created a new folder within and started the extraction. Now, before the extraction has declared corrupt files and given me the checksum number, this time it went through no trouble.
In the new folder created was 2 files. The Eve Installer (1.44mb) and a archive file. I ran the Eve Installer, it all went fine, Eve started and I went and had a look at the new graphics. I havent left the station yet as ive read all the horror stories about graphic crashes, sound crashes, warp crashes and stuff so im waiting to see if CCP make a new patch to patch the patch (they normally do after an expansion)
Anyway, thats what I did. Heres hoping it works for, at least, some of you.
Good luck

I've unpacked the executable with 7zip and received no checksum errors. Installation was successful. Game runs very well. I am confirming your results.
I however did not remove my cache, or previous game installation.
Works perfectly. Thanks for your solution.

Hrrrm. I tried unpacking with WinRAR, but I suppose that it MIGHT be possible that WinRAR was being a git...
I just discovered that I can get a download speed of 5MB/S over a college network.

I fortunately haven't had any problems at all letting the game update itself, so far, on my Vista machine. However, I will note that I'd be terrified to remove my cache or whatever- all those methodically-placed UI windows and such, reset to defaults and needing to be re-adjusted once more? No thanks. I painstakingly moved those files when I made a new system build (not in prep for Apocrypha, mind you, just a full-sys upgrade and a selling of the old system), so I'm rather loathe to scrap such. ---- "Sounds like a bad case of pikal envy, if you ask me."

Thx for the reply, however, this is aimed at people who cannot patch and get the invalied/corrupted files when they have tried to update. For many players the only option has been un-install Eve and try again. This is meant for them. Also I would add -- it took me less than 30 mins to change all of my settings back to pre-patch in the way that I like them. Over-view done, BM's done, UI done, Shortkeys done, all done. 30 mins to re-set or another few days waiting for ccp to see if they can fix this problem? I dont offer this as a definate way to fix it, it worked for me and im hoping it will work for others, thats all really.

Edited by: Alejan Gerakh on 12/03/2009 11:45:28 Thanks for being so polite, annoing. I did realize it was directed at people who were in a situation I am not, but I just thought I'd add that concern... I spent a decent while in high-sec adjusting everything for my combat readiness with the UI, and if I was ever forced to scrap it all, it would be daunting to me, as I would feel I could never get it just right from how it was, and adjusting my combat UI out in the Black would be a bit worrying.
However, I will note that I just thought on it and found it hard to believe that the corruption would have anything to do with the install, if it's all in the unzip stage of the update, well before the installs are meant to start... corrupted downloads happen, and that's an unfortunate fact, but usually a redownload is all that's needed. To think that scrapping things that don't seem to have much to do with the unzip process would make a difference... I'm sorry, but I just have a hard time seeing it, with my knowledge.
Now, yes, I could see removing the install directory when doing a reinstall- that's a good practice. But if the errors are starting in the unzip stage, that has nothing to do with files in places that are only referenced when the Install stage is engaged. ---- "Sounds like a bad case of pikal envy, if you ask me."

Good Comments Alejan. However, I've just gone through this and can confirm Annoing's comments.
Here are things that I tried: Automatic patch: Failed. Download of complete install and patch: Failed. Complete download (again) and uninstall: Failed. Complete download (again) and reboot (already uninstalled): Failed Complete download, Extract using 7-zip, verify that everything under CCP directory is gone, reboot and install: works.
Essentially, I tried everything that I could think of to avoid Annoing's process and it all failed.
Following the recommendations exactly, including the reboots, worked perfectly.
Thanks Annoing.

I assume this is for a PC. I'm using an iMac running OS X. I don't know the specifics of how the download/patching mechanism works on macs that may be different from how it works on a PC, but do you have any ideas whether this might work on a mac? I don't know where everything goes on the mac; the only thing I see is the single file of the EVE client app that I run. If it's storing information (user settings, etc), I don't know where it's doing it. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Same here. Macs are notorious for the 'kid-gloves' feel, in my opinion. Just doesn't feel right...
But annoing has a good methodology here- I've used it before as a last resort with other games. I'd put off trashing all the settings and window positions/dimensions files in the Documents and Settings (or Users directory for us Vista users) until absolutely necessary, personally, but even that must be scrapped if all other options have been exhausted, and really only if the game refuses to start. Any errors in installation procedure are probably not related to the settings and such that tend to be stored in the OS user directories. ---- "Sounds like a bad case of pikal envy, if you ask me."

During the initial patch problem someone linked the direct link to the patch. However, if it makes you feel better about the patch you can do it via http://www.eveonline.com/download/?fallback=1 which when you click on the windows link it gives you 84244_m.exe link itself. Giving you the direct link to the patch was just to save people some time (as the 'fallback' addy only comes up after you fail in the auto-patch process). Also, by adding the _m it means you can _manually download from the the links instead of using the auto process .. like the rtp files etc.

I guess it does matter that all of the old files are deleted BEFORE downloading the _m.exe... It's incredibly odd.
I've tried everything except doing all this again, and re-downloading the exact same file again for the 4th time. (I've already tried the autodownloaders 3 times [patch and client] each.)
This is a joke.

Annoing! Dude! ROXX0R3D this download!! finally an outside link to the download not using CCPs craptacular Patcher. I'm sorry, but if I can't resume a download it's useless to me! I never even got more than 20MB from their patcher, while I have downloaded 5% in just a few minutes with the link to the file that you posted. It even says resume capability "yes" so I have a very good warm fuzzy feeling. From my chest hair to my ballfro!
Thanks very much man!

It's funny that TCP/IP, HTTP and FTP have been around for decades now, and reliable downloading of files still appears to be rocket science ...
Not even Firefox can do it after years of development. But it has "intelligent" auto-completion, which forces us to use bookmarks.
And CCP, failing to develop a homebrew download client, outsource this immensely complex piece of software by licensing some crap that doesn't work.
How will we ever overcome the financial crisis, cure cancer, extinguish world hunger or stop global warming if we fail at such simple tasks?

I dl'ed the 1.3gb first, then 7 attempts at the 1.9gb before this solution came to mind. Some people have dl'ed the patch even more than that.

Then i'm sorry for you. I didnt think it would work for everyone but its never nice to hear when it didnt work for someone.
I can only believe that CCP are working on this as they must KNOW that there are hundreds of people with this same error. I hope, for your sake, that they get the fix up soon.
Good luck
PS: NOM3M3 -- any chance you can tell me the details of the failure. I want to see if there is a common thread to the faults when it fails.
Also, if anyone else out there knows a way I can get my slow a$$ upload speed to work well enough for me to ftp my working folder (containing the installer and archive file) for people to use as a last resort?

This gets better. The torrent checked the file and found that it was fine. It didn't download any additional parts or find any corruption. Does anyone have the MD5 checksum for the correct file. I'm not sure how you check these things, but FDM can check t he file it downloads against a value I give it (I don't know how to do it the other way around!).
So the file unpacks and installs fine, no problems. Reboot. All going ok!
Start EVE, crash.
"CCP ExeFile has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I just see the splashscreen but it crashes instantly. I've opened logserver and it flags up the initialisation of the .exe file as the error but it goes onto several other entries relating to cache (up to entry 8!) then stops.
I guess I could try reinstalling, but that will probably just tell me the installation is now magically corrupt!

I found another solution that worked for me, but it's similar enough to what's being suggested here that I figure I will add my comments here.
My situation: I downloaded the full client 4-5 times. Sometimes the exe would complain of CRC errors, nothing I could do. Others would appear to install, but show data errors in the comments box, and the result was a client that would crash at the splash screen, "CCP Exefile.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" etc.
One other clue I noticed was that several files - maybe half of the entire install - were showing file sizes of zero bytes, so I figured that in itself was the likely cause of the crashing and explained the data errors that showed during installation. My next step was to install the client on another PC (in my case, at work), which worked flawlessly - at this point I knew it had to be something with my home machine and my issues were not CCP's fault.
Once I realised this, I took the install exe and extracted its contents using 7-zip as described earlier in this thread (thanks for this, annoing). I then burned the individual files to DVD (was slightly too big, the remainder went onto my flash drive), took both home and simply copied the individual files into my game install here, in the process overwriting the zero-byte files that failed to extract here for whatever reason(s), which I'm now assuming to be hardware-related.
Fired up the client, worked first time. \o/
So to anyone whose client is crashing at the splash screen, check for any zero-byte files in your game folder. You may have the same problem I did, in which case you can try the same solution: install the game elsewhere, then copy the correctly extracted files back into your home install.
I know I was at my wit's end for a while there, so I hope this idea is of use to anyone else out there still stuck as I was.
/Ben

Ok, I finally managed to get it installed! Success!
I downloaded the entire client _m.exe and force checked it with bittorent.
Made sure all traces of old (and attempted) EVE files were deleted.
Rebooted.
Unpacked the file using 7-zip file manager.
Went through setup.
