The new intro movie ROCKS.
However, it doesn't play all that smoothly. Not really sure why. It's a Bink file, which generally play quite well. If you want to watch it outside the game, I recommend downloading Bink and Smacker from Rad Video Tools. This will allow you to play the ".bik" file that the movie is encoded with.
You will find the file in your "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\res\video" directory (if using XP or Wine) not sure where it would be on ****sta.
It's pretty big, 720p resolution. That may be part of the reason it didn't play properly for some people. Again, I'm not really sure why many people had choppy video/audio playback on that movie. It plays perfectly in Bink Player. ---- Fix the Wardec System! |

EDIT: WHOOPS!
Apparently my Bink player was not fully updated (prolly 4 years old) I updated to the latest version and BLAM! The video played crappily. Apparently it's the latest version of Bink player that's a piece of crud. I would imagine that CCP has embedded the Bink player into it's client (That's what it's primarily used for. Embedding in games) and THAT is why the videos play like absolute trash.
CCP, I'd get on the horn with Rad video tools and find out WTF is going on with them.
Just another follow up to this one.
I think I may have found the problem with the video playback. If you don't select the proper "Blitting" method for playback of the video, the playback is choppy and inconsistent as your system will have a difficult time processing the file unless it is very powerful. This may be why some people experience issues with it and some don't. Differences in machines.
At any rate, if you downloaded Bink and Smacker, open the program itself. Browse to the video location in the browse window, highlight the ".bik" intro movie and select "advanced play". You can pick the option of "Direct Draw to primary surface" as the Blitting style from a drop-down window right in the center of the advanced play dialog. This allows a smooth playback.
CCP, I think your devs picked the wrong Blitting method on the embedded Bink player for the eve client, or they left it at "auto select" which doesn't seem to select the proper method. You will need to work up a small patch to reset the Blitting method to Direct Draw, and then reset the option for the intro movie.
Good luck! ---- Fix the Wardec System! |
