Hello. New here and loving the game so far, but I was wondering if there was some knowledge base including methods for optimizing the eve client for low end machines. Not just old computers, but in specific my netbook which I use on campus while at school. It's lacking in the processing and graphics department (1.6ghz cpu and onboard vga), but it has a gig of ram and fills the minimum system requirements. I'm sure there's a post somewhere asking this exact question that I've yet to find, so thank you for your patience in avoiding the "READ THE FORUMS" responses.

try updating the motherboard drivers...especially for the onboard VGA

Edited by: Tkar vonBiggendorf on 12/03/2009 07:39:30 In the graphics settings, turn off shadows, HDR and bloom. Enable the resource cache (try both ways, it should help being on). Select low shader and texture options. Turn off all the effects. Turn off "Sun is occluded by ships". Turn on "Widescreen" -- even if you don't have a widescreen -- it puts black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, which reduces the render load on the card and also makes it easer to see your modules in the HUD (that green activation glow is hard to see in green nebula backgrounds).
EDIT: And as mentioned by the previous poster, update your graphics chipset drivers. Sometimes updated drivers can make a big difference in performance, especially if you've never updated them before.

Even with all the steps posted above, I wouldn't try doing anything really dangerous while on that notebook. Chatting in station and browsing the market should be fine, but I definitely wouldn't take my ship to low sec, or out of a station if you're at war, with it. Just to be safe. Probably not any of the tougher missions, either.

Edited by: Faith Rowe on 12/03/2009 09:41:38 Thank you for the quick responses. I've followed all the suggestions and they've brought an improvement, unfortunately nowhere close to the performance I was getting back on the classic client.
The old one would give smooth performance on lowest settings out in even some more mundane missions, but the premium client on it's lowest settings is getting about 6 frames per second even in stations.
Oh well, maybe this will just encourage me to get into the market and hauling. Or maybe find a new game to play while on campus.

Yeah, it's an unfortunate issue CCP has introduced. They want to eliminate updating everything twice, and figure that 90% or more of users have machines that support the premium client.
Sounds good on paper, but that 10% don't see it that way.
But I mostly blame computer makers for putting onboard VGA cards into their systems, and proceeding to market them as gaming ready.
Notebooks will often have sub-par video cards, as the video card is probably the biggest power user outside of the CPU and DVD drive on the system. ___________________________________

As a graphics developer (Both 3D models and Photoshop) I can tell you that keeping the classic client intact would (almost) double the workload of the artists. First, you have to dosnscale the new high-poly T3 models to classic poly-count, followed by a (complete?) UV re-map and retexturing. This takes alot of time. Also, changes will ahve to be made as the classic client does not support 8among other things) bump mapping etc.
Alot of extra work for 10% of the population. it might suck, I know, but fortunately DESKTOP replacements can be found that are able to run premium for not more than a a few bucks (30-40ish?)
but yes. Computer retailers really are bastards. Baal Aristaeus eats horses.. |

Netbooks are designed to be low end machines strictly for work. You really aren't going to get anything out it it. --------------------------- Your neighborhood sociopath. |

Here's a couple other things to improve performance: 1. Display and Graphics tab - go to the right side and turn off all options, set everything low 2. Display and Graphics tab - on the left side select "Advanced Settings", go to Present Interval and set it to "Interval One" - this prevents EVE from trying to refresh beyond your monitor's capabilities (often 60 Hz for LCD screens).
I'm getting as good or better performance running two clients in windowed mode, versus Classic. My PC is a venerable 2.4 GHz, 1 GB RAM, with 6600 NVidia.

Edited by: Tkar vonBiggendorf on 13/03/2009 12:39:27 Almost forgot... other things you can do for low performance machines. Transparency, in particular, is bad for slower computers:
On the tab where you select your menu/background colors, slide both transparency bars all the way to the right, make them fully opaque.
In space, "pin" your current selection, overview, drone, fleet, etc. windows (the box near the close box/minimize boxes in the upper right corner) -- you can toggle windows between transparent and opaque. You want them all opaque.
XXXXXXXX Also, there's a "Load station environment" option in there somewhere -- disable that one, it takes away the 3d background in stations and replaces it with a static background image. XXXXXXXX EDIT: Scratch that, can't find the station environment option anymore. :(

I run EvE on a netbook while at work (eee 1000H), get a great 3-4fps with everything turned off.
A netbook will not get you a playable experience as it has been designed for battery life and not game playing, as such it has a low speed graphics card and a low end CPU. nVidia will be releasing a netbook soon that should work better with the EvE client but until its released we will not know how well.
For now all you can do is chat and skill change with it, maybe trade as well but any form of combat will struggle. ----
God gave us a brain, he also gave us a voice.
Shame some people have yet to connect them.
