So my 60GB iPod video is on it's last legs. Got this sucker in 2006 and it's lasted a lot longer than I thought it would. But it's starting to fall apart, headphone jack isn't "reading" headphones properly (causes the left side to break within minutes guaranteed), screen is all scratched up and getting loose, etc etc.
So! I was looking at buying a Zune. Mainly because it plays FLAC format and no more stupid ass iTunes. But I'm reading some iPod touch v Zune threads on other forums and they seem incredibly similar. Battery life is relatively similar, screen size/resolution is pretty much the same, blah blah blah.
All it comes down to now is you, forum peoples! Give me your experiences! I need some pros and cons for both. But I'm leaning more towards a Zune. (You can put designs on it! That's just plain awesome.) _____

I've got an iphone, which is basically ipod touch + phone - hard drive space. I've only had it a couple months but I love it. Between the stuff it comes with and the apps from the app store you can get (even the free ones) there's so much you can do with it. I would definitely say to go with the ipod.

iPod = iSmug irridiation and bending over for $teve Job$. On top of that iTunes is rootkit software.
Zune/Zen = propriety software too and one of those pieces of ****e only works with DRM. Also as far as I know the Zune will only read WDM so enjoy converting all of your music.
Best MP3 player in existence is the Sansa. It beats everything in price, quality and space. Sansa's don't have a large hard disk but can be upgraded with Micro SD's which work out at a fraction of the price that you pay for one of those other ******ed MP3 players.
Alternative is an Archos 7 series with 320GB HD and a 17cm (7") screen. I would love to see that iFail and M$ ***gotry beat this.
Even if I'm wrong about the Zune and the Zen they're still ****e as you can only sync them to one PC. The best software available for these useless pieces of hardware is Winamp with plugins. I have two Ipods there and regret buying both now. I have tried Rockbox but that is unstable and sucks the battery continuously. Winamp however removes the synchronisation problem and allows any PC to put music on the devices. I do wish I could buy a Sansa though, why oh why aren't they available where I live? |

I have a Zune - it's great for what I bought it for, which is playing music. It plays Windows Media natively so if you're an ******* about sound quality it works well, if your music is in that format.
The software is terrible - it's slow and bloated and I don't use it for anything except syncing. Why it doesn't just use Windows Media Player is beyond me.
All two people (plus me) that I know who have a Zune still have their first Zune (all first-generation 30GB models) - haven't seen the newer ones but the older ones are quite sturdy and declining battery life hasn't really become an issue (at least, not yet). The newer models don't have any features any of us care about and the relativly large size of the first-generation model is a non-issue.
Video - I use Amazon's Unbox service for renting movies and such, and it doesn't work with the Zune but it does work with Creative players, which makes me sad. Zune doesn't seem to work with DRM'd anything, so don't plan on putting any (legit) downloaded video on it, except for random crap like EvE trailers. It re-encodes the video to the Zune's native resolution, the encoder is very slow (at least on my Core2 Duo).
ZunePass can be good if you like mainstream music. The last I checked it out they had very little of the stuff I like though (mostly Euro metal, house, and trance). $9.95 a month for unlimited access to the entire catalog seems like a reasonable price to me though, if I liked that kind of music.
TLDR version: If your music is in windows media format and music is all you really care about, it's a good player. For video it's OK, iPod and the Creative players are probably better though. |

The iPod touch is a nice device but I hate its reliance on software.
I'd be tempted to look at alternate offerin's.
Sandisk, Creative, Archos... something like that. I personally use a basic Sony player. 2gb of glory. Hell, I only ever listen to the same **** over and over so it does me fine.

ipod classic 120gb + media monkey if you don't want to use itunes. Then again, I have a stupidly large music library so the bigger the drive on my player the better.
I'd stay away from the itouch - mainly because i have had nothing but constant issues with my iphone and it's basically a touch with phone capability. ----------------------

Steve Jobs is not what makes Apple great. Sure, he has a say on all products. But I love Mac OSX.
If I can get mac OSX, I'll happily pump money into his account.

I love the "Raaarrrrr don't support the ebil corporations!!!!111" responses that threads like this always get. You're right, iTunes sucks, but I still love my ipod and iphone (I don't own a Mac for the record). Owning an Apple product doesn't make you a pompous ******* or anything else, and supporting Microsoft doesn't mean you're supporting the downfall of humanity. Just pick one you think is cool and get it.

All I care about is music, I'm a major audiophile so sound quality is really all I care about. I'll check out the Zen, sounds nice. You guys have done nothing but make my decision harder though. :(
I don't screw around with programs or anything like that with my iPod, I just put music on it and.. listen to it. Charge it when I get home, take it out w/ me when I leave. That's 'bout it.
If it can play music I'm happy. Size is important too because I have a massive MASSIVE music library. _____

I see more ipod touches at my school than almost all the other media players combined... its a great platform, well worth the money they are asking It can do pretty much anything (including make calls, assuming you buy a mic and use the voip client)
Ok maybe im an ipod touch fanboy :x they are awesome i tell ya

The conforming to some fake norm is really silly.
Enjoy wasting your money on an iPod when you can get much better for much less, just without the iSmug logo on it.
Sansa + 8x8GB MSD cards = not even half the price of a 60GB iFail and with more storage.

Actually these threads just show how people ignorantly love to waste money on a little logo when they can get better for less but continuously decide not to and routinely let $teve Job$ decide what they want. Has God enabled copy and paste on the iFail with phone functions yet?

Edited by: Great Artista on 15/03/2009 13:18:50 Hey, I was wondering if you could help me too, I find it pointless to start a new thread for pretty much the same questions.
I have Zen Stone atm. I like it, its small, out of the way in the pocket and does its job which is to play music without any pointless features. My problem is that the batterylife is rather short. Its charged via usb and the battery lasts only about 7-8h, I can't remember was it always this short, the player is pretty old, that might have something to do with it. I'd need it to last at least 11h which is the work day for me (1h travel to work, 9h work, 1h back).
Can you guys recommend a new mp3 player for me? Anything above 2gb is wasted space, I don't have that big playlists, but if something cheap is found for that size, then obviously it'll do. Thanks in advance! _______

Show me a Mp3 player anything like the iPhone.
Show me a computer anything like the iMac.
Show me an operating system that can run my mac tools.
Show me a keyboard like the wireless apple keyboard.
That's right. There's no alternative. So stop whining about Apple having a monopoly.

The new iPod shuffle is kinda neat. It only has 10 hours battery. But it recharges fully in 3 hours and holds 4gb. And there's a remote on the headset allowing you to change track without having to reach into your pocket.
If I didn't have my iPod classic with 80gb, I'd go for the new shuffle(I need the full 80gb however).

Do yourself a favour and get a portable player that has buttons. Real buttons that you can touch
You can press buttons while the thing is in your pockets, but you can't operate a touch screen without looking at it.
I have an iPhone, and it fails as a portable player because it has no buttons. Having to get it out of my pocket everytime I want to skip a track is annoying...

iPod touch is win - got the 16GB model last week. My only complaint is that the chrome back scratches impossibly easily - just putting it down will result in some serious battle scars. I would advise getting a protective case if you care about that kind of thing. The screen is very resilient though, and you can get some effective screen protectors for it if you're paranoid [like me] -----

http://cydia.thebigboss.org/moreinfo/PocketTouch.php
The site is made to be viewed from cydia on the ipod, so forgive the formatting. Basically, it is a program that allows gesture based controls instead of specific places to touch. No more needing to take your ipod out of your pocket!
