I have been trying to learn solo pvp for a bit now and while getting into a tough fights never stopped me so far my solo operations end more or less in disaster. Honestly I perscribe to the notion that you need to experiance to learn however considering my perticular penchant for picking the wrong systems to set up shop for solo pvp in and subsequently getting my ship destoryed I figured it was time to ask for some help.
I typicaly fly rifters or jaguars with a fairly robust fitting (tech 2 equipment, guns, ect) but I wanted to ask. What is the best way to set up to find decent pvp oppertunities and how (if possible) can a player predict hotspots or greater risk areas not sutible for a solo ship? |

One suggestion: hunt militia in FW space. To do this, bring up the next two maps and fly to whatever's pink (= contested) at the time. A Rifter can get into all FW plexes; a Jaguar is only restricted from minor plexes.
1. http://evemaps.dotlan.net/map/Amarr_VS_Minmatar
2. http://evemaps.dotlan.net/map/Caldari_VS_Gallente
General knowledge about FW plexes:
They're anomalies, so you can see all of them within 64AU of your ship after ten seconds with the onboard scanner. When anyone initiates a warp to one, a beacon goes up. 'Outpost' sites (which have the weakest NPCs) will spawn every 30 minutes. Minor plexes have "minor" in the name, and are limited to T1 frigs, faction frigs, and destroyers. Medium plexes have neither "minor" nor "major" in the name, and restrict anything above T1+faction cruisers - so no BCs, in particular. All plexes except unrestricted majors have an acceleration gate.
And for your purpose:
If, say, Amarr militia are in a plex in an Amarr-occupied system, and the system is contested, then he'll be sitting on a timer inside the plex, and as little as one wave of rats will be waiting to aggress you when you warp in. If the same pilot is in a plex in a Minmatar-occupied system, then he'll be killing rats near the timer and will already have aggro. In either case, he's going to see you coming and will have time enough to move right to where you'll land if he wants.
Especially if you see defending (Amarr in Amarr-occupied systems) pilots around, or members of both militias around, you can open a FW plex yourself to invite a fight. Don't count on catching them outside the acceleration gate, though.
When you do run into a (militia) blob or gate camp, odds are they'll have small stuff for tackle instead of SEBO'd large stuff, as gate guns normally aren't an issue, so you should be able to run through in a frig. |

Working as intended.
You are gaining experience and on an accelerated course to becoming a competent PVP pilot.
What you should be asking is, "Where did I get the false assumption that learning through experience would mean I wouldn't lose ships?"
It is precisely because you will lose ships that people recommend you fly cheap Rifters (rather than those Jags).
One day, you will realize you haven't lost a Rifter in several days, during which time you killed a handful of other T1 frigates, a few destroyers, a couple of cruisers, and even one battlecruiser. The same sharks were out there trying to gank you, but you knew who most of them were and could guess by their actions the others, and you successfully evaded them. A couple of times you bit off more than you could chew, but you managed to shake their tackle and escape in deep structure. At that point you will have learned most of what you can learn flying T1 frigates, and you'll be ready to move on.

Solo PvP is a myth. Sure everyone gets a chance to murder some poor SOB on gate or trapped in bubble when traveling. However, it is much more enjoyable cruising null/lowsec with a cyno bait and hope some elite PvP gang egresses me. Why? Because EVE is a social game, and I have 100 dudes sitting on the titan waiting to murder everything on grid in a flash. We all wait with anticipation, and then when we are done podding and looting your wreaks we laugh at your pathetic fits.
My point is, get friends and join a PvP oriented corp/alliance that will teach you how to fight as a team rather a hobo gang waiting to be thrown in to a meat-grinder. |

It could very well be either of those two. More often then not, you roam around trying to get a good fight and then you realize you've been cruising for 3 hours, you didn't really need this ship anyways, and oh look there's a BC in belt one... and then you probably end up warping home in your pod. But hey, if I can bring something down with me of roughly equal value, I'm happy. |

Give RvB a try.
Basically you will get consistent PvP daily. We have rules in place that will give you the option of solo pvp (1v1 are honored throughout RvB) if you want that or fleets running often enough that you can log in and get into some fights fairly quickly. There are a good mix of new players and veterans alike who will gladly lend you a hand. We also regularly run low/null fleets for laughs and are pretty laid back. Look up our KB and give it a try if you like.

Don-¦t join a 0.0 alliance/corp, you will not learn anything from it. When I solo in small ships I look at the map with current average pilots checked and usually anything above 10 is either, a camp, ratters or afkers in a station. A good way to see camps is to look at the entry systems into 0.0, most of those are camped at one point of the day. I would avoid RvB and instead go into 0.0 to learn how bubles and things like that work. |

You should check out my frigate videos...
Most PVPers lose alot unless they wait all day for the "perfect fight" where their opponent takes all the risk and they can pull off an easy win. Doing that is VERY boring.
If you're having trouble getting blobbed all the time you should work on isolating your targets better. Force a fight where they can't blob you.
But the main advice I have is to have fun and instead of the old "never fly what you can't afford to lose" you should "never fly what you can't afford to lose 20 times or more" because doing it that way makes the game much more fun.

Join Faction Ware it really helps a lot because of these reasons:
- You have a great choice of war targets, so no need to go pirate.
- Plexes and missions help you to avoid being oversized or overblobbed if used correctly.
- You have the choice between active hunting or passive baiting.

Hell, when I fly rifters, I go out looking for a fight. Even when I'm not taking a rifter out, I always undock with the philosophy that "90% of the time I undock this ship, I will not be docking in this ship again." By this philosophy, I don't worry as much as I normally would because it's already a lost ship. It also removes some of the restrictions of fights that I get into. Anyways, where I began, when I undock in a rifter or a thrasher, I go out planning on killing or being killed. Where I fly there's usually a fight waiting 2-3 jumps away and always it's unfair in one direction or the other. I love killing in Thrashers and I love losing thrashers.
The point is, there are fights out there to be had solo and you can almost find them anywhere, but Don't ignore 0.0 corps or alliances, but at the same time, be wary of who you talk to. I would agree that it's best to get with a group of people who share goals like yours and work with them. Solo is fun, but this game isn't about how badass you are solo... as there's always a better fish. |

Everyone who is good at PvP has lost ships, it's just a matter of how many you lose. Few people actually think about why they lost their ship, what they could have done differently and made a mental note to do that NEXT time the situation comes along in order to get a kill/escape etc.
Be different. Think about why you lost. Talk to the guys who killed you and get their feedback. Join Public Channels and ask questions from experienced PvPers.
Above all, have fun! Flying solo can get depressing if you suffer a streak of losses, but remind yourself how far you've come!
P.S. I suggest not joining RvB. Whilst they are a good venue for constant action, their artificial limitations is not realistic of ordinary PvP and you'll get a shock when you venture into low sec/0.0 and wonder why simply spamming approach -> F1 to F8 isn't working out that well for you. |

There's no definite guide to this stuff.
Deciding to engage and then engaging and not getting ganked in the face is part of "doing" solo PVP. |

First off you are right. The only way to learn is to get out there and pvp. Which means you will lose ships and you will kills ships too. But try not to think of it as winning or losing, try to think of it as whether or not you are improving. This will help you through some of those losing streaks that are discouraging to everyone.
As far where to pvp: in a frig, if you fit an mwd, you are gonna be safe in 99% of the lowsec and null. You're not invulnerable but most gatecamps wont be able to catch you so i would just open up ur map and select the average players in space in the last 30 min option and go where you see the big dot in lowsec/nullnec .
fly safe out there o/ |

This is very true. I used to think Null Sec was so dangerous.....before i went out and got 27 jumps deep into fountain and a few other regions. Truth is out of 30 systems i explored, on average only 5 or less have anyone there. Its actually relatively deserted in alot of the nullsec areas that i have seen.
That being said, can someone suggest a few hotspots in nullsec they know of so i can show up and try to bomb the **** out of an unsuspecting gate camp or fleet? |

If you are very new to PvP try can flipping. I learned in gallente space in a rifter (or something less intimidating). If you look up potential targets age and check their KB history you can determine if they are PvPers or not. Try the systems that have a decent amount of belt/population just outside of noob areas.
My philosophy is if you are trying to learn a new sport, you don't join a professional team on day one and have them teach you what to do. Get practice against people who have even less experience than you do and slowly work your way up. A tutor never hurts either.
Also, do your home work. When i first started PvPing, I would practice D-scanning as I flew around highsec. If i saw any ships who's name I didn't recognize, I would look up their possible fittings on battleclinic and plug them into EFT to play around with.
I have literally never met a good PvPer (meaning they can and do actively solo and FC and get kills at a decent efficiency) who learned PvP in a 0,0 sov setting. |
