At this point, we can direct our probes to warp to any location on the solar system map we can click. We cannot do this with our ships. Why not?
This would make safe spots pretty easy...in fact, you wouldn't need any if you could click warp on the SS map.
I'm sure this idea, if implemented, would break all kinds of established techniques for things so I don't actaully expect them to implement it, but you have to admit, since we can do this with probes, it makes no sense at all that we cannot do it with ships.

Now that you've pointed this out .. .. in the forums no less ...

Actually this used to be possible. Sort of.
You couldn't right click - warp to per say, but you could right click anywhere on the map and create a bookmark. Then warp to the bookmark.
They removed it because you could make SS so deep it was impossible to scan you down. Besides, I'm never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down |

Think about that for just a second longer. Doesnt this mean you can move your probe and warp to it? TAADAAAAAH!

For certain?
Have you tried this, or is this a guess?

You can't warp to your own probes though, have to scan something down and warp to that.
Can't remember if you can bookmark your probes positions now but it's extremely unlikely.
Good point though, now it's possible to scan a lot deeper.
However there seems to be no end to how deep the surrounds of a solar system can go so still pretty undesirable to have when a ship is around 200 au off the sun.

Just a guess. I'm not a prober but makes sense you could warp to it like any other scanned down ship in the game no?

You use to be able to do this too, but you can't any longer for the same reason.

So CCP found a way to nerf space itself. Incredible. You just can't make up stuff this bizarre.
Call me a realist if you want, but doesn't it strike anyone else as beyond ridiculous that we can travel around the entire galaxy virtually at will, but we can't warp in a straight line in a given direction because -- gasp! -- that would allow people to hide in the deep, dark depths of space. Holy cow! People hiding in deep space! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

You would still be able to scan down people in deep space. But it would be hard.
Perhaps they should bring this back and introduce a specialized ship intended for deep space exploration. If you want to find people hiding really deep, it would be possible but take some work and advanced skills.
Sounds better to me than nerfing space.

Schmalance. Old players still have deep safe spot bookmarks created with the first probing system. The old Observator probes used to have 90 AU scan deviation. You could just scan for anything and get a hit to warp to that was way off the deep end. Have a buddy warp to you, scan for his ship, lather, rinse, repeat until you are a couple hundred AU from the sun.

There is a grid when moving probes on the new scanner system. Why couldn't they take that logic and put a grid limiting the size of the system (some being bigger then others) then allow us to warp to anywhere within the grid? The work is already done it seems? Shouldn't be too hard to implement, right?

this idea is full of win.
Someone CSM the sh*t outta this!
grid that determines max height, and dimensions. and just warp to your probes, or warp your ship.
Or set an actual distance that is massive and a probe that has an insane max range but is only scanning for targets more then 100 or 200 au away. and then bring the other probes inline with that.
Found a use for a new destroyer perhaps? mini command ship/recon action on a destroyer hull. Bonus for scanning, powergrid and warp speed.
Could be tastey.

Edited by: shi''ako on 13/03/2009 23:18:39 This would make it a lot more interesting.. And fit back with how I EvE should be. A lot less restrictive and predictable.
Maybe given that you have particle and rocks and other stuff in space, your computer just takes longer to work out the warp. Given it needs to reference the local objects to predict the warp distance/energy bla bla bla and so on, as itĘs not warping to any pre known point in its database. And the father out from the sun and a celestial object you are the harder it is to lock and warp too. then remove book marking in warp and i think u have a very nice new/old system..

The only whining here is from those that want to make things easy. Easy to scan and easy to find targets.
I say make EVE hard. Make people work to find targets that are trying to hide. This is supposed to be a game based in space, not one where all the players are trapped like goldfish in a bowl.

Since the backstory explains that sensors don't work in warp and thus that you can only reliably warp to gravity signatures, no.
Also, you realise that pod pilots have yet to acquire true interstellar spacecraft? Without some kind of support infrastructure, gates, cynos, wormholes, we can't even leave a star system. How is that 'travelling the entire galaxy at will'?
Finally, with regard to probes, I would imagine they use different drive technology. They get a gate-like effect when they 'warp' away, so it is not what the main ships use.
Also, balance.

Because making it trivial to hide from anyone, even a dedicated prober, indefinitely is making things hard. -

I would much rather have the option for gateless travel as well as using gates. Have a warp point available that takes you to the next systems sun but, with the fastest warping ship (Inty), it's going to take 15 minutes to get there in warp and probably several stops and starts since cap won't be enough to do it in one. At some point, a load of the new system could take place in the background and since you're seeing the screen as you warp, you won't notice it. It would appear to be a seamless transition from one system to another. Only works for systems that are close together rather than those linked by regional gates.
NPC's must already have that ability since I never see a NPC trader convoy using the gates
No good for slow ships like Freighters since the entire trip would take several hours and a standard 3au warp speed ship would take an hour or more for one jump. However, it's an alternative if you're prepared to take it.
Edit: To make it clear that this isn't a means to get rid of gates, merely an alternative option if you're willing to take the time. -- Sig design in training: Remaining time 30 years 20 days, 4 hours, 10 mins, 15 seconds. |
