The description says: Skill at precision missile homing. Proficiency at this skill increases the accuracy of a fired missile's exact point of impact, resulting in greater damage to small targets. 5% decreased factor of signature radius for light, heavy and cruise missile explosions per level of skill.
This description was written before heavy assault missiles. Does this skill not apply to heavy assault missiles?

Light missiles -> heavy missiles -> cruise missiles: GMP applies
Rockets -> heavy assault missiles -> torpedoes: GMP does not apply.

The hint is in the name Guided Missile Precision, all guided missiles as stated it applies to otherwise it doesn't. That is why it does not apply to say torpedo's or heavy assualt - because these are unguided.

Rockets, HAMs and Torpedoes also do NOT gain any benefits from any other missile explosion radius reduction sources, only lights/heavies/cruise do. It's not just the GMP skill, it's also the implants, boosters and the rigs that have no effect on those "unguided" missiles. Long story short, absolutely nothing reduces the explosion radius of unguided missiles (but many things can reduce the explosion radius of guided missiles).

OK, after 3 and some years I have to ask: what guides LMs, HMs and CMc, and not guides others? :P

FoF missiles are the only unguided missiles in game, so that hint doesn't work. --

No. Long range missiles are guided, short range are unguided.
Rockets, Heavy Assault, Torpedoes they are all unguided.

... as opposed to.. torpedoes, HAMs and rockets which only fire in a straight line once released from the missile bay?
They;re all guided. Just some aren't guided guided.

What The only unguided missiles are FoFs and defenders, which can be fired without needing a specific target. All others require a lock on a target and home in. -------------

Look, this is EvE. Stuff making sense is the exception, not the rule. Just accept that torps/HAMs/rockets don't get their explosion radius reduced by anything, because that's the way it is.

The way I see it, the long range missiles are guided by the ship. The short range are guided by the missile itself, and cannot be augmented by pilot skill as the pilot is flying the ship, not the missile. -- Distortion| Distortion 2 Preview |

This. Forget reality and stick with the game mechanics. It doesn't matter if stuff makes sense IRL or not, only what's in the game. The instructions for the skills are pretty complete and specific, so use those as a guide.
Yes, IRL un-guided missiles would simply go in a straight line and would act more like turret ammo. Also IRL torpedoes are guided. None of that logic carries to the game.

The fact you need a target does not mean they are unguided, actually they should be self-guided (they have on-board stuff for targeting), while LR missiles (cruise&co) only receive guidance data from the ship, and SR stuff (torpedo&co) receive no data at all (they're nothing more than big projectiles who maybe have only the minimal instruments to mantain a straight route), but you still need to aim your launchers at something (so you need a target, not for your missiles, but for your launchers)...
The tl;dr version is: LR are guided, SR are not. That's how the game is designed.
Do not try and find the signature... that's impossible. Instead only try to realize the truth... There is no signature. |

FoF missiles are the only unguided missiles in game, so that hint doesn't work.
WRONG.
FoF missiles have self-homing giudance units built into them. That takes away from warhead space, so they do less damage than Guided.
Guided MIssiles have a teleoperation link in them, so that the ship can guide them after launch. Those also take away from warhead space, so Guided also do less damage, just not as much less than FoF because the teleoperation link is smaller. Think of a modern radar-guided missile, it's the same principle.
The Unguided missiles are DUMBFIRE missiles with no internal course correction whatsoever. Once they're launched, they fly straight. Any apparent "homing" on these missiles part is a lag artifact. Therefore, the unguided missiles have the MOST warhead space, therefore do the most damaging explosions. Because the warhead is just explosive + shell, there's no room for any kind of a concentrator field or other technobabble to reduce the explosion radius - they literally don't have the hardware for it.
That explain it any better to you? FoF being unguided - LOL, they certainly are! NEver heard of a "smart" warhead? YOu should - we have 'em in RL!

What's the point of a lengthy explanation like that when it's obviously you just making stuff up? Missiles just have two categorizations in-game: guided and unguided, with the only difference being whether or not they are affected by explosion radius reducing effects; no deeper meaning is attached to this classification within the context of the game. I guess you were just roleplaying or something ;p
Better question would be why the game developers felt it was necessary for balance for the explosion radius of the unguided subgroup of missiles to be irreducible.

because T2 heavy dam Torps used to do about 3500-4000 dam EACH to a player megathron. before the Hp boost and other nerfbat swings torps were too powerful. (rockets got shafted a bit in the process, but hardly anyone uses them anyways)
slightly off topic and an beaten horse so thoroughly beaten it rotted to flattened scraps: Heavy Assault Missile should've been Heavy Rocket or Light Torpedo damn it!

Or, looking at it from the other side, why the Devs thought that it was necessary for guided-missile users to train a rank 5 skill to V to get the level of performance that the missile class is balanced around?

Guided: lights, heavy, cruise Unguided: rocket, HAM, Torp
I guess I never knew this distinction existed.. guided vs unguided. Especially since there are skills around like this: "Target Navigation Prediction" which implies that ALL missiles are guided: "Proficiency at optimizing a missile's flight path to negate the effects of a target's speed upon the explosion's impact. 10% decrease per level in factor of target's velocity for all missiles."
But, like you said. It's Eve. It doesn't have to make sense. Thanks for all of the responses. Good(?) to know that after almost 4 years, I'm still learning the basics of this game...
edit: more emphasis

Thats also why torpedoes wont do full damage to even most battleships unless it's shield tanked to increase it's sig above 450 and webbed to decrease it's speed...
