So I'm one of the poor (literally, these days) bastards whose laptop cannot cope with Apocrypha and for work I must have a laptop and not a desktop. I'm saving my pennies for an Alienware laptop on the assumption that it will be more than capable of running Eve, but will it in fact be able to? I'd like to hear from actual Alienware users, not just guesses based upon the Alienware specs since, on paper, they are clearly powerful enough machines to handle Apocrypha. I see many owners of powerful computers complaining that the new Eve is torturing their gpu's to the point of destruction, so if any Alienware laptop owners can tell me how Apocrypha has been working out for them that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

If you can afford one of these beasts then all I can suggest is that, as soon as you launch eve, you press esc and set "Present Interval" to "Interval One" - then yes, Eve will be seckseh on your laptop. ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

You claim you're poor, but you're saving for an Alienware laptop?

Hehe, yeah, saving my pennies, a few pennies at a time. It will be a long while before I can actually buy it. I figure that after getting caught with an out-of-date laptop by Apocrypha's requirements I'd better not try to get back in the game with some piece of crap that will only barely handle it. Maybe by the time I can get my hands on the new machine CCP will have fixed all the bugs with this expansion too. Besides, it seems to me that the Alienware laptops are not all that expensive compared to business laptops with similar capabilities.

Dont buy Alieware.
There are other less known companies that sell laptops that have same specs as Alienware for cheaper.

Laptops are not as fast, cheap, upgradable, cheaply/easily servicable as normal PC's. So unless you REALLY need a laptop and you REALLY need to play games on that I'd suggest to buy a normal PC. Even if you do need a latop most of the time you're better off with a cheap one that gets the neccesary work done and then play games on a normal comp.
Getting a gaming laptop means it'll cost you an arm and a leg, it'll have nuclear meltdowns on your table, make a ton of noise, work for 5 minutes on battery power and weigh about 7 tons. You won't be able to upgrade it at all, you'll HAVE to have it serviced by the supplier (ie, he's got you by the balls so it's gonna take ages and cost you your first born). And it'll be outdated before you can say "wow, is that the new COD?".
Seriously, buy a PC and get a simple laptop for whatever work you need to do on it. You'll be better off.

I believe Alienware use to use Sager laptops prior to being bought by Dell. I saw the insides of a Sager and it looked just like my old old Alienware.
But I would probably by a Sager if I wanted a "gaming" laptop right now.

I use an Alienware M17 to play EvE amongst other games and my God, its great =D
My particular set up cost me about ú1500, give or take a bit and it seems capable of running pretty much everything I throw at it, even Crysis Oo |

Dell Vostro. Designed for business, so cheap, but can be customised for gaming purposes. Mine dual-clients EVE no problem, it was only Ç1200 a year ago.
Alienware is the same thing, only more expensive, and marks you as someone who doesn't know any better. -

Edited by: Joseph 9 on 18/03/2009 22:21:42 An alternative option is to buy a laptop and a desktop. Get a laptop that is light, portable and long lived for your work (say around ú500), and get a medium priced desktop (again around ú500, maybe a bit more if you need a monitor) for Eve. The medium cost desktop will destroy all but the hugest and most expensive laptop on the market without effort, and you get a sensible laptop for work.

I'm also on Dell Vostro 1500 with Nvidia 8600 m card in it. While it runs EVE ok (single client, acceptable performance, for dualbox have to downgrade gfx somewhat) and is within reasonable pricerange (unless you 'max everything' on it) I would not consider it to be gaming laptop. Particularly bcos it's DELL at the end of day and thus you might run into some problems if you want to install latest drivers on it or whatever. You can do it ofc if you really want, just takes some digging to get em to install.
If you have ability to spend the money then somekind desktop replacement with desktop gfx card in it might be better idea. They are heavy and battery life is like 30 min or so in real world but well ... thats life. cnet has some rather good reviews in it also for additional information.

While I can recomend Alienware on their (somewhat pricy) desktops due to great performance and reliability the same can not be said for their laptops unless things have changed in the last year. I am the owner of an Aurora m9700 and while it runs pretty much anything I can throw at it, it does it to the point of physically damaging the CPU through its massive heat production. I have heard similar problems from other m9700 and m9750 users but can not say anything about their newer laptop models.
If I were you I would buy a reasonable laptop for ú500 ($700 although stuff here in the UK is pretty pricy atm cos of current crisis) and use your savings to invest in a good desktop that will last you a lot longer and is much easier to maintain/upgrade.
