So, i have an alt account that I was training an industry char on. But I realize thats not very interesting (to me) and I was wondering what else one can do with an alt account. (When your main is a pvp pilot or not)
So, how about we make a list of things to do with your ALT.
Ill start with what i've been doing.
Miner Manufacturer (or industrial in general) Probing (scouting)
Anyone else know anything interesting to do with your alt?

well, my alt account specs in industry/invention/manufacturing/exploration stuff (has a bit of combat skills, nothing spectacular, enough to T2 fit a HAC and that's about it)

My alt is a hauler for when I mine, and a fleet booster for when I do missions/wormholes.
Getting him into a Fleet Command ship eventually, and he flies an e-war frigate (target painter and web) right now.
Leadership bonuses are always good to have, and the fleet command structure skills take quite a while, it's good to have those on an alt.

Also for training some of those 'I wanna' things. It allows me to be more frivolous with my skill points and training focus while still keeping my combat main purely focused.
More useful and essential in 0.0 to be honest, but still good to have : )

yeah i think i'm gonna sell my industrial/miner alt (can use the isk anyway) and start up a probing alt on that account.
A cap pilot could be fun too, but not very usefull if you're based in Empire i guess =)

Edited by: Tinuji on 19/03/2009 17:32:09 I have the following:
1st acct: Main Account - My primary character, who is a PVPer living in 0.0
2nd acct: Empire Alt - Lives in a hub system, flies haulers and has some basic trade skills. Buys everything my main needs and contracts it to corp mates to have it jumped to 0.0 for me. Currently training towards jump freighter. Will likely be moved to my main account once that training is complete to save money on accounts.
3rd acct: Cap Alt - Currently training for Carrier and Dread, will always be on its own account to ensure I can have caps on standby for my corp.
4th acct: Cyno alts - 3 Cyno alts that can be placed whereever to enable me to jump from empire to 0.0 or whatever.

WOW. and I though I was bad...
TBH, they really needed to get rid of ghost training. There were too many ppl exploiting it unfairly and the cost of characters is really better off because of it.
Whats causing your client to crash every 5 min? That doesnt seem right. I have it on 5 computers atm and none of them do that...

This is what I'm planning to go through :
Main Account - Main Char -> Mission-whoring -> Casual anti-pirate PVP -> Very casual corp mining.
2nd Account - Alt Char (Me) -> Logistics ( To make my CNR/Golem even more "I WIN" in missions, and provide more survivability for my corp's PvP gangs ) -> CovOps/Probing ( To probe out ebil low-sec mission runners piwates ) -> Falcon ( You know what for ) -> Reprocess/Manufacture/Invention/Hauling ( Additional ISK flow + self-making T2 ammo ) -> Then going Combat too if I ever decide to go back to low-sec someday -> Carrier (?)

having an alt on the same account is beyond pointless. The character you aren't training could just be learning the same skills.
If you have a second account, the main use of an alt would be mining/refining/production types or perhaps a Trade alt that monitors a trade hub and buys/sells for profits to feed your main pilot iskies.
Other uses could be, specializing in a different race for different ships more quickly, Cyno alt, hauler/salvager to more quickly scoops loots and salvage from your missions or a hauler to carry off ore from your miner (if you main was a miner).

I'll tell you what I have mine do, I have several accounts: (Go go gadget GTCs)
Acct1.1: Primary char (Maxed Exploration, and Cald/Gal PvP, Dreads, Carriers in both) Acct1.2: Datacore Miner/Cyno/Forum poster (me =) Acct1.3: Datacore Miner/Cyno
Acct2.1: First major alt/Mission runner/Highly speced PvP in Amarrian ships, Command ships + Mindlinks, Eventually Additional Dread pilot), Also T2 invention char and Building (L5 Battleship construction =) Hes basicly my First char, done right. I really should use him more often... Acct2.2: Alt corp CEO/Researcher/Cyno/Datacore Miner Acct2.3: Research Alt/Cyno/Datacores
Acct3.1: Hulk Pilot/Rorq/Jump Freighters (Currently training for Dreads, then Carriers) Acct3.2: Research/Cyno/Datacores Acct3.3: Research/Cyno/Datacores
Accounts 4, 5 and 6 Match Account 3. I also have 3 other accounts that just have medicore Hulk ships that I rarely activate, and created many years ago (Orginally Osprey pilots =) (Only when I *NEED* Mins like a mad man.. in which case, I normally take a quick month break due to the exhaustion of running so many freaking accounts) Those accounts also have Datacore miners (most are only L1/L2 agents due to lazyness, they never did join my alt corp to get better, I had to do those by hand.. never again)
With 2-3 day mining binges in 0.0 with my Hulks/Second Alt) every 3 months I can pay for all my accounts, plus my PvP habbit. I also have a habbit of afk mining in empire when I get home on the hulks for Veld, keeps the income coming in as little as that is. (Builds up fast) Datacores account for a small chunk of, but its a nice added yearly bonus when I cash them all in.
Do I spend alot of time on all this? Honestly, no. I only log in the chars for the most part to switch skills, and only every so often when needed, I mine a storm up and strip 3-5 belts and Im good for another 3 months. Once everyone is in a Dread, I'll be a one man POS stomping machine. MMM and Fighter 5/Carrier 5 Carriers mmmmm Just wait till you see MY gate camps :P
----------------------------
For you, you can have your 1st alt do many things. I would recommend with a steady income first. Mining is always a steady income, and doesn't have to be done sitting there concentrating on it. Plus, its a pretty short skill path to master. Go mining first. Then after that, its up to you what you need it for. Exploration is always a good idea, My alt would have exploration skills maxed if I didnt already have it on my main (though he is 4 across for redundency) And that too, is a very short skill path (5 months top to be 100% perfect.. not including implants =)
Industral is a good longterm choice, however you will need several things to make him useful, Mining is one for your own mins, second is a large selection of BPOs to work from, which is were exploration comes in. Once you realize the total isk to make a good portfolio of BPOs and a collection of BPCs, (its alot..., not counting the research time required to make them useful) and the time investment needed to train the relavent skills.. you'll be glad you have a secondary profession to drop into =)
Or.. you can make a Cap ship alt, leave your main to focus on Subcaps =) A friend of mine has an account dedicated to his Nyx, 3 years old and still training that thing.

I disagree that an alt on your mains account is pointless. Having an alt trained for research, trade/market or deep space transports is useful.

I have 3 accounts. First is the mission runner and the PVP to come. The second is the miner and refiner. The 3rd and newest is the manufacturer. The best thing that is to come from alts is that they should soon be able to pay for all 3 accounts through plexes. I mean I LOVE playing EVE but I hate shoveling out 45 bucks a month for it.

I started a bunch of alts before apocrypha hit to beneficiate from the 800k starting sp + double training time.
Old accounts:
PVP gallente main PVE caldari alt PVP amarr alt
New accounts (all currently training):
PVP minmatar and corp infiltrator alt dedicated command ship alt exploration/mining alt pure mining alt mining/rorqual alt pure production alt future nyx pilot alt
I really need to cut back , although many of these alts I'll stop skilling within a year or so.

Prior to the new game experience I created alts for random actvity that I didn't want my main involved with - mostly random stupid PVP. I have an alt with <900,000 sp who was running around Delve in ships with stupid names getting podded every few minutes.
But, I'm now sticking with my alts, one is a hauler for hi-sec logistics, the other will be an implant free suicide tackler for fleet actions.

I agree.
Unless you're at a point where they are paying for themselves... but i highly doubt somebody playing 8 accounts is sane either way. ___________________________________________

Can't speak for everyone.. but I pay nothing :P Hulk accounts pay for everything, and it takes surprisingly little time to get the isk when I have the 5 "main" accounts working. Maybe 1 day a month I get the needed isk. Also combine that with afk mining in highsec when I go to work (with an automated script to power cycle my router after an hour to disconnect)
The isk really does mount up. Only time I need GTCs is when I have big stuff to buy (Like the Jump freighters, grr expensive)

Personally, my main is 26m SP and is PvP/PvE/Astro/hulk pilot; My alt is 11m SP and is Maxxed Astro/Combat Salvager/DS Transport. She's almost a viable Dominix pilot.
I make isk from missions, WH, and plexes. It's nice to have an alt along for firepower, remote rep, and cleanup. Makes missions AND plexes so much faster and easier.
A corpmate of mine has 8 accounts; 7 hulk 1 rorq. His little fleet decimates belts in hours, and cleans out whole systems in a weekend. Talk about cash. Yes, he can pay for his accounts with PLEX, with room to spare.
