I've been scanning all sorts of stuff in my SAC since the expansion. Is the covert ops really needed now? Does it just give you results easier or are there sites that can't be found without the scanning bonuses it gives?

No a Covert Ops is not needed. I did some exploration in my BC with a Sisters Core Probe Launcher and Sister Probes. I had no problems to find the exit wormhole and some sites.
But there are harder sites where i did not get past 50% signal strength. A Coverd Ops makes live much easier on those.

Given that, with max skills and a set of Virtue implants, you can find every site on the reported scale of 8 strengths (see here) using only Deep Space Scanner Probes, using core probes on a non-covops with a similarly maxed + implanted char you should be able to find every site available. (I'll leave it as an exercise to the reader to decide what skills + implants are actually required as a minimum to find every site on that scale with core probes.)
Unless that scale doesn't cover every site in the game.
This doesn't mean the bonus is useless - on the contrary, swapping out to the covops is far far quicker to get an overview / find all sites in a given system (with DSP) than it is to use core probes for finding anything specific.

Seeing that probe launchers (exploration anyhow) doesn't require a crippling amount of CPU these days, I'd say a Covert Ops isn't a requirement, though still preferred. *** Currently Playing: Trolls from Outer Space Current Equipment: VISAcard chain mail, +2 Amulet of Epic Whine, Self Banstick +2 WTB: +666 E-peen killboard stats |

combat probing: best use a force recon (Arazu / Rapier preferred), or a covert ops if you are ok with waiting for a tackler
exploration probing: works on any ship, but best on covert ops (not as tedious, as most difficult sites are hard to nail without the bonus)

Well that's cool then. Astrometrics 5 was next up on the list for the deep core probes. Everything else is at 4. Any others I should take to level 5?

Edited by: el caido on 19/03/2009 13:47:49 With those skills, you'll be fine in any ship, Kebast. I haven't have any trouble finding anything I was looking for with the exact same.
EDIT: ... in a Myr.
