Hi
I have some graphical questions that i would like to get answered. First i tell you how i run eve.
Everything maxed in game (except the 30 something color choice, now i have 24 plus 8), AA force maxed to 24 x, all other settings maxed from gpu control panel . I run eve 1920x1200 resolution.
1. When shall we get a new skybox graphics, they are nice at the time, but very low resolution and it makes it look ugly and parts of it are bit jaggy. I tried to change the color setting to 30 something but i get a black screen if i do it. Now is this a bug? I got an lcd display that can do 1920x1200, but this color i cannot select.
2. Ships look ok but whats wrong with the stations? The textures are not detailed or sharp enough, also a strange glass kind of material looks that are poorly made? I have seen some great eve screenshot that were made with special eve client, can we please use that too? I got 4870x2 and im sure i could run it pretty well, i know that it would be hell in jita or fleet battle, but i dont care, i mine alone so would not mind to see better graphics.
3. Why does planet looks so damn ugly? Could we please get a good set of new textures.
4. When shall we get dx10?
5. The designer of caldari ships and stations should be shot. Ships like raven and few others are so horrid i would not like to fly them, i mean geometry not textures.
I would like to thank the developers, even the caldari ship and station one for a hard work. I'm pretty pleased how the game looks, but there is lot of improvements to be made.
Thank you ________________________________________________

Crayton,
I have been wondering the same with the background, it looks very pixelated even with dither at max. Not to mention that you can clearly see different 'sections' of the map (to big difference in contrast of adjacent color) dunno if this is an issue due to lcd displays or not (using a 24" samsung T240 with rather good contrast ratios but still) I seem to recollect one of the devs stating her somewhere that they are looking into redesigning the backgrounds and planets for higher detail, so lets see what happens :)

I agree with you about the planets, but for a MMO, EVE has top of the line graphics. Okay okay some of the new effects aren't that pretty but that's subjective.
I mean, just look at WoW, everything looks pretty compared to that. ---

i believe they are working on that as part of the trinity refresh project.

we wont, current gossip suggests EVE will go streight from 9 to 11 , as dx 10 is a large sack of pish.

dx10 is actually pretty good but nvidia crippled support for it because ati cards are a helluva lot better at it.

swapping to dx10 wouldnt make it look any better atm and also theres still a hell lot of people that dont have dx10 capable hardware, and the compatibility in dx10 is crap

1. Backgrounds are still low-res classic textures. New pwetty (and logically/geographically consistent) ones are in the works. 2. I noticed this as well, especially after the first post-Apoc patch. Somehow, it seems the texture- and shader quality was reduced one notch. High-quality now more resembles what I recall medium quality looked like just after Apoc was deployed. 3. See #1. 4. Somewhere around the time when DX12 is released. Right now, it offers no advantages and is too poorly supported. 5. SIF! Caldari designs are original and pwnsauce. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in =v=… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I don't think that was the OPs point. Let me see if I can't make it more coherent.
EVE Online has some absolutely breathtaking graphics(W-space is insanely good...), but it tends to be wildly inconsistent in areas. I'm guessing the question is inquiring, "Will anything be done to make the already great graphics in EVE more consistent? "

as a game developer I can tell you a few things about what's going on under the hood.
First off, the skybox textures...
The skybox's do have graphical artifacts from it's compression and size (256x256 cube face size). I believe they are compressed dds textures using DXT1 or DXT5. This gives a rather harsh ramp when rendering with alpha transparency. Skybox's in Eve have transparent backgrounds for the stars to shine through. Because of this, you get the nasty edges. This isn't a CCP issue, it's a DirectX issue. Sure, you can render twice to get nice fades between the color ranges by rendering once with the alpha test (transparent background) drawing to the depth buffer and again without rendering to the depth buffer but this causes double renders and slows down FPS.
The issue with not having sharp textures. Everyone's graphics cards are different. Different gfx cards handle AA differently and since you stated you had AA tuned all the way up to 24x its also performing AA on the multisamples of the textures. Either turn your AA to something like 4x or get a better gfx card.
Planet textures are a hit and miss sometimes. A lot of the planets look the same as they did from day one. Others, look better (there are a few planets with "cracks" in it's surface that look pretty, others are just cold gas planets that don't have too much detail). I do think CCP could step up the normal mapping and stuff on the planets like we have on the ships but again, this would all take time away from gameplay programming etc etc. I'm sure they will redo them at a later date.
Caldari ships look a lot better now then they did back in the classic client. I do agree that some of the caldari ship designs are a little out in left field compared to others. However, having played almost every race in Eve, I can tell you each race has a few ships whose designs are a little strange. That is why I think Eve has done so well. The artistic direction in CCP is top notch and if you think you can do a better job designing ships, do so and let CCP have a look, otherwise, let the artists do their job.
DX10 isn't needed as of yet as not everyone has updated to vista etc etc. Having programmed several game engines in the past I can tell you its VERY difficult programming a game engine that supports both DX9 and DX10 and automatically selects the right version to use with your current setup. I don't expect a dx10 version of Trinity Engine out anytime soon. Maybe by late 2010 or 2011 we will have dx10/11 support but dx10 doesn't make a game look any better, only helps developers on what they can achieve through the pipeline (example, vertex data stream results).
When they add the ability to walk around in stations etc you may see other aspects of eve updated as well. Just keep your fingers crossed and enjoy Eve. If having a few graphic artifacts in the backgrounds throw you off of Eve, then might I suggest the unsubscribe feature of the account management section.

dx10 is a myth.
Even games which say they are DX10, arnt really, they only use a small part of its capabilities. Most of the time its just lighting effects ontop of older existing stuff.
How long has dx10 been out now?.. its even a struggle to find games which make use of dx9! Age of Conan was supposed to have it on release and as far as Im aware still doesnt have it.
I dont expect to see dx10 fully implemented into any current mmo. not while so many people are still on XP.

I kind of like the look of eve, besides its good for its age (although I think its had 5 new heads and 7 new handles if you know what I mean).
Besides sometimes I think half the people would be happy enough to play it as a text game in things like fleet battles

As for the textures for planets, skyboxes etc, they do need improving, as do some ship textures and models which are very low quality and some don't even fit together properly (domi) BECAUSE OF FALCON. Guide to forum posting |

Okay wow is terrible graphics, but in general making graphics which look good is very easy for a space game like eve. Much easier than trying to make a natural environment with grass and trees look good.

Actually AOC does now support DX10. It was introduced in a patch about a month or so back, they still call their DX10 a test but it's now a Public Test Option on the live servers.

you can force AA through your Nvidia or ATI Control panel. You have to turn of HDR to have it work though. There is a way to get both HDR and AA to work together though but there are other threads covering that, just use Eve-Search.

Originally they were working on a DX10 Client as well as a DX9 for the trinity upgrade, but dx10 was scrapped because of too much work for too little gain basically.(Not enough people that are dx10 capable to make it worthwhile) It was hinted though that it could still be a possiblity in the future, though i highly doubt that now with dx11 about to come out.

I know about that.
1. This doesn't work for everyone. 2. Should not have to use external applications for this. 3. Lack of dev support means possible glitches, poor performance when using external tools. 4. The devs ought to have the expertise required. 5. What games don't support AA these days?

I wonder how hard it would be to remove the skybox alltogether?
Would it be possible to have galaxies and clouds static at certain locations in the EVE universe that is seen from all systems (that are close enough)?
That would give a feeling about where you are as a cloud seen to the right in amarr space for example could be to the left in minmatar space
No more need to mess around with semi transparent skyboxes with low res textures that renders on the wrong level.

You don't need to turn HDR off with ATI HDxxxx cards and Catalyst 9.4 (I think it is) and above, AA + HDR work nicely together.

DX10 is Vista only. Vista didn't sell. Companies don't develop stuff for non-existing customers. Windows 7 will be shipping with DX11. It's extremely unlikely a DX10 EVE client will be released.

Edited by: Messoroz on 16/08/2009 02:19:47 There is no point in EVE using DX10, a few new shader tricks but that would probably require them redoing the shaders which they already did not long ago. Not to mention a major overhaul of their graphics core yet again.

Your argument is lacking in content.
While gameplay is more important than graphics, ideally, both would be excellent. While Eve mostly looks good, there is still plenty of room for improved graphics and will be until photorealism is achieved.

Read the whole article, XP sold 17 million units first month in a market half the size. Vista should have sold 34 million to get the same popularity. Second, 12 to 15 million of those sales were included with hardware. It's well known a lot of those sales are downgraded to XP. Especially in corporations. So while Vista may have sold 20 million units in the first month, the actual number of Vista systems still running from that month will be much lower.
Anyway, the numbers speak for themselves, ~24% vista vs ~64% XP. As a developer, what you develop for XP/DX9 will give you 88% potential market. What you develop for DX10 a 24% potential market. It really is a no-brainer. Given that PC's are usually written off in 3 years and Vista is nearing it's third birthday, the numbers really should have been reversed. At least, if you want to say it sold.

Planets will be updated during the planetary interaction update.
The videos devs use is a special client running at 5000x res something and shrunk down to fit our screens, a cheaters way of antiaisling similar to what the xbox 360 does where as the ps3 tries to do it the hard way and still has jaggies. Also there is apperanlty another engine in work to make eve look what we saw in the last 10 seconds of emperyan age trailer, we may not see this for a while but they are showcasing it every chance they get, every fan fest dvd and allaince tornament is littered with these ultra cool scenes.

I for one like Caldari designs, tho I am not fond of the Amarr/Gallente ones (they are good, mind you, tho they just don't do it for me) :P.
But some do not appreciate the niceness of functionality, and the fact that this is space (no friction here, so no need for aerodynamic designes), so why bother with eye candy designes on your machine of death? :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Read this again and think about what this statement tells us about you. I'm not joking or jesting here, you are seriously saying that because you don't like the style of certain ships and stations that the designer, freakishly talented designer, should be shot.
ugh totally missed his point, however obvious he made it.
game definitely needs an upgrade. And for those saying a lot of people don't have the required hardware, that's fine, that's why they let people choose low medium and high.

He was being unfair, really they are quite nice, it's just the caldari cruisers that are all ugly, even the caracal could've done with being tweaked, feels too thin and spindly.
I don't know why he thinks the textures are fine though, caldari paintjobs are crap except for Kaalakiota.

You probably want to correct those links, unless you really want everyone to be able to scroll through all your uploaded photos. Some fairly funny BRUCE photo's.

No, the cruisers are fine, I like the designs a lot. Caracal may seem fragile, but its a shiled tanker, no need for lots of armor plates ;). Moa/Blackbird got pretty sweet designs as well.
As for "paint jobs", the regular blue is ok, the ishukone is ok (tho why use camo in space?), the black one is nice.
I think the textures on the raven needs more details tho. But Rokh is very nice.
I really do not get why some dislike Caldari designs. Really, I don't. :S

They introduced a by-law in 2003 in Yorkshire that states that "Any person, may shoot, with intent to kill or to cripple, any graphics artist who considers that he knows more than another person on any subject, and conveys that notion verbally instead of doing as he's ****ing told."
Actually I made that up. But if I was on Jury Service, and a guy killed a graphics artist on my watch, I'd definitely be in the Not Guilty camp at the beginning of the trial. But then again I've only met 8, and they have all been absolute ****s. Maybe I just need to meet more of them.
One of them is STILL on a popular internet dating site after SIX years, and you only need to read her profile to figure out why. Christ.... they're such awful people.

Originally by: Daedalus II I wonder how hard it would be to remove the skybox alltogether?
Would it be possible to have galaxies and clouds static at certain locations in the EVE universe that is seen from all systems (that are close enough)?
That would give a feeling about where you are as a cloud seen to the right in amarr space for example could be to the left in minmatar space
No more need to mess around with semi transparent skyboxes with low res textures that renders on the wrong level.
Take a moment and think about what you just said. _____ ^ That is a sig line. It should be there without me having to put one in.

Personally, I've always wondered why all the stars twinkle. That's an illusion to us here on Earth caused by atmospheric distortion. They don't twinkle when you're in space.

I would really like them to update the space graphics myself.
I think as the ships, stations, asteroids and planets get updated graphics and enhancements, the quality (or lack of... it is starting to look dated) of the backgrounds gets further and further away from the rest of the game.

1. Players insist on running on old or crappy graphics cards. CCP did a poll to see what players wanted. That limits heavily what CCP can do.
2. Also that means HDR will not run with AA and be officially supported which has to happen or CCP gets in trouble as players accuse them of breaking their cards. The older graphic card manufactures cut corners so you cant have both on older cards so blame them.
3. Other graphic elements cannot be undated for the same reason.
So blame the players.

Originally by: gabereiser as a game developer I can tell you a few things about what's going on under the hood.
This is a 'game dev' who i think might actually be a game dev.
