I am 0.5M SP newbie, who has been training learning. A 3 week trip with bad laptop means I have some more training time but then I really want to leave the hangar. I have read what I could find, but would appreciate some advice on ship(s).
I originally thought about pure carebear - invention/manufacturing. But I would really like to sample PVE high-sec - missions, hauling, mining. In particular, it might turn out that I want to do some missioning for income and to do something different ( I am a bit bewildered about invention; it will take me quite a while to figure out what I could profitablely manufacture and few people describe mining as excessively exciting.) My guess was my horrible videogame/FPS skills would best be served by a Caldari ship with missiles.
So I could get a Kestrel and do level 1 missions, then get destroyer then Caracal. or Kestrel -> Caracal. or start with Caracal. I can afford a few Caracal (need to be realistic) but not dozens. My hope is the Caracal would cost more but make doing the intro missions / tutorials easier than using the starter ship or a Kestrel. OTOH, I have concerns: are the tutorials / level 1 missions assuming you are in a starter ship / frigate and there are tasks ( mining, salvage) that the Caracal can't do or do well? In particular, will the cruiser be able to successfully deal with smaller ships / objects - the target radius issue? Is my hope that a missile cruiser would have an easier time with targeting smaller ships true? I guess an assumption here is that in this range of PVE, one ship is enough. Or do I need several flavors?
TIA for suggestions, analysis or links,

The Caracal will suit you nicely. You have the option of fitting heavy assault launchers, heavy launchers, or assault launchers, for best killing large/medium/small ships respectively. A Caracal also has 2(?) turret hardpoints, I think, so you could mine in it for a mission if desperate. Eventually you'll be in a Caracal, one way or another.

If you insure your ship you don't have to buy dozens of them... and both the Caracal and the Kestrel are, to my meagre experience, good missions boats for level 1. You'd probably be able to do most level 2s in the Caracal as well.

The "normal" way to go with missioning Caldari Ships is :
Level 1 Mission = Kestrel Level 2 Mission = Caracal Level 3 Mission = Drake Level 4 Mission = Raven

Yes, the caracal is the most efficient cruiser for lvl1 and 2 missions, as with an assault missile setup it just slaps frigates left and right, unless any other cruiser, who will be forced to use cruiser sized weapons, which reduce their effectivity over the caracal.
And here's the setup my trader alt was using:
[Caracal, LightMissileBuffer] Ballistic Control System II Ballistic Control System II
Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners Large F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction Large F-S9 Regolith Shield Induction Viscoelastic EM Ward Salubrity I Additional Thermal Barrier Emitter I
'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile 'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile 'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile 'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile 'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile

where, with the skills and OT-experience, you can do L2 with a Kestrel, L3 with a Caracal, L4 in a Drake.

I have a few suggestings/comments I hope you will find helpful.
1) The Kestrel and the Cormorant are excellent L1 boats. The nice thing about a Cormorant is that you can also fit it with a tractor and salvager and still have plenty of high slots for weapons for L1 missions. 2) The caracal is a super boat for L2 missions. 3) If you get your relavent skills up to rank 3 you should not have to worry about having multiple Kestrels and Caracals for L1 and L2 missions. 4) Consider using a Cormorant as a dedicated salvage ship. With L2 and higher missions the wreck count will start to mount and a Cormorant with 4 tractors, 4 salavagers, a Micro Warp Drive, and two Cargo Expansion modules in the lows makes for quick clean up (I still use mine to clean up after L4 and L5 missions).
Have fun!

There's little more to say.
Just one question: Is that your first character? Your comprehension of the game in this littme time and your general attitude show you will be a good pilot.
I wish you luck with PVE, but don't give PVP the cold shoulder because you don't think you'll be up to the task.
Fly safe!

Oh, and one more thing... If you plan on doing any mining, the Osprey, is the finest mining cruiser in the game, bar none.

This, basically. This is still my basic L2 fit when I'm grinding standings (albeit all T2 at this point) and it does a fine job. Pulse the AB, keep the hardeners going the whole time. Oh, and remember to swap them out based on mission-specific damage.
When you're up for it, slap two Hogboglins in the drone bay for even more anti-frig damage.

I'd be really surprised if it was. I've recently got my calamari guy into a Drake and despite lower paper DPS than my turret boat of choice it actually works out a fair bit quicker because I don't have to move half the time. Lower DPS - travel time = same or higher DPM.
OP, yes. Caracal is a great choice. Work it so you won't be flat broke and shipless if you lose it (keep your kestrel), but yes. It's terrific for L1 and L2 missions.
There are a handful of missions that have gates that won't let a cruiser in (I think Worlds Collide is an unpleasant surprise for a lot of people) but the Kestrel doesn't have a hard time doing em with an afterburner.

I think it really comes down to training. Back in the day, I was much more heavily trained in guns than missiles. (mostly because when I started, the Merlin was the coolest looking ship to me, so i trained that way). Also loved the Harpy back in the days before speed tanking. This brought me to the Moa, Ferox, and Vulture. Just have a thing for rails I think. Of course, I've come full circle, and now occasionally use my vulture for mining.. go figure...

drakes have massive tanks but missiles still have the issues of flight time, low rate of fire, and explosion signature issues (most lvl3s are still loaded with frigs). 250mm rails touch everything in range for lvl 3's and have better ROF. since dictating range is vital in anything in eve. the ability to snipe a large number of targets at range means less time wasted waiting for small things to go pop and less work for your drones since insta-popping frigs are range reduces the amount of targets that your drones have to go through, saving overall time.
and range = tank. so the drakes massive tank is only useful for close range encounters, which is few and far between for lvl3s.
