Edited by: Sahga7 on 24/03/2009 12:02:23 So I was theorizing about what would be most profitable.
Say you fly in a Marauder (golem in my case). Mission running is a steady income and goes pretty decent.(edit, lvl 4's in high sec)
But exploration (in High sec) can yield sites (no clue about their profitability and how many you find)
And then there is the new and shiny wormholes, very nice and adaptable sleepers who yield nice salvage and stuff.
But what if I just wanne make the most money? Which one is most profitable?

The problem is exploration is very much down to competition from other players and luck. If you hang out in Amarr space you may do ok but Caldari space has too many players, so forget it. Too much competition for the good sites. Plus when you find stuff it is luck what good loot drops you get. You may make very little ISK for days and then hit the jackpot.
If you mission it's steady guaranteed income.
Dunno enough about WH stuff. But I expect the risk will wipe out a good chunk of profit.

Missioning in high sec. Hands down. No doubt. No contest.
High sec exploration for sites gives you a horrible return with the possible exception of mining kernite/omber in gravimetric sites in regions where those ores are needed for storyline missions and can't usually be mined.
Sure, it's possible to get a decent drop that makes it worthwhile, I haven't seen one since Apoc went live though and I've done a lot of high sec scanning. You'll also need some new ships because your Golem wont fit into many high sec unknown acceleration gates. Most sites are so easy to find that the lucrative ones (radar) get pushed into low sec space where hardly anyone does them in comparison to the competition in high sec so you almost never see them. Even if you can get to them the drops seem absolutely dismal compared to low sec radars. Talking of horrible drops, high sec magnetometrics are cringe worthy. I bet you get more salvage in less time running a level 4 mission than salvaging a magnetometric site. Let alone the bounties, reward and LP.
The sleeper salvage market is currently horrible. Everything that I've found is worth less than decent T1 salvage (e.g. armor plates or alloyed tritanium bars). This may change as T3 manufacturing gets underway, but currently it sucks.
Easy wormhole magnetometric sites are hard to solo and will despawn if you warp out during the fighting after a certain number of waves. You can end up fighting a wave of three frigates, three cruisers and a battleship. Perhaps you can do that in your golem, I haven't yet in my dominix. If you can't hack the cans then you're looking at maybe 5-6 million/hour not counting scan time. With scan time it's probably closer to 1-2 million or less. Not sure what the returns are if you can hack the cans.
No comment on wormhole radars, haven't found one yet, and I've spent many hours looking.
Supposedly wormhole anomalies are easier but I haven't tried them.

You're forgetting the part where almost any WH hacking or archeology loot is worth hundreds of millions, just a few days ago 4 of us went out and within 3 hours made over 500 mill. Sure that income isn't consistent but sleeper salvage is not bad, you just don't sell it to sell orders because they are lowballing it right out of the park. If you play your cards right you can expect to make an average of 8 mill or so an hour, plus the jackpots worth 500 Mill.

...and how long did it take you to find that site? 4 people making 500 mil over 3 hours is about 42 mil ISK/hour, so you're already into L4 mission territory. Add to that the time you spend looking for that WH, and I bet you're down into mining income territory (~7 mil ISK/hour).

My impression was that the OP was asking about what he could expect to earn from exploring in his Golem from high sec. Can you complete 25% of 500 million flying solo in three hours? I couldn't solo a perimeter mag site (although I got a lot closer the second time).
I've also spent dozens of hours searching wormholes and haven't found a radar and when you're searching you're earning 0 (zero) isk/hour.
If you're playing at the weekend then your odds of finding an unattended wormhole in high sec appear to be exceedingly low. Thus you can spend a lot of time earning nothing just trying to find a wormhole which you can then spend a lot of time discovering that it doesn't have a site that you're interested in. The paydays have to be pretty huge to bring the average up to something worthwhile.

Well, one thing is clear. In high sec exploration (non WH) is not very profitable. WH exploration has potential but you have to find one and then find some sites in that as well. And I have the strange feeling that they are quite high risk =)
Ill stick to L4's atm, and maybe try some WH stuff in the future. Could be interesting to do.

If you want to stay in high sec, lvl4's are the way to go. If you are willing to lose the occasional ship and pod, then many options that are far more profitable open up. First off, low sec lvl4's away from low/high sec border systems are a good place. LP and mission rewards are more or less double that of 0.8 sec system agents. It's also pretty safe, just get to know the locals.
Exploration in low sec can also be profitable, find a good 7/10 plex or up and you will make an awful lot of isk in an hour or two. You will probably need a wingman or two however. High sec exploration is trash for the most part. Mining is also trash. Null sec ratting is typically considered the most profitable and I will agree. However it is also the second most boring thing to do in eve (mining is #1 for that) and anyone who can put up with more than 10 minutes of it seriously needs to have their head examined.
WH's are very profitable atm but are also very risky. The good ones are also small gang territory. You cannot solo them, even if you bring a carrier. Blobbing them will also give bad results as you will lose many ships. However a 5-6 man gang can take on the toughest of them and even with the loot split 5-6 ways, it's still amazingly profitable if you can get your ships and loot out intact.

Good thread.
With the changes to DSP, i've decided to hold off on training Astro 5 and codebreaker. Although my careful analysis of the market tells me there's still value out there, until i am ready to get into lowsec exploration it doesn't seem worth it. I am too new and with the DSP nerf even highsec seems unreasonable (for now).

The income from exploration have dropped considerable since the first and 2nd week of WH space. And the way the market works I reckon it will keep dropping for a few more weeks. I think they have overseeded explore sites and even some of the goodies (I have had some huge hauls in low sec sites). I would guess they want to jump-start the T3 ship market, so supply has got to be high.
My expectation is that explore sites will eventually become less common, or spawn at more "normal" rate, and thus more profitable when you can find them.
I agree that many new explorers will not stick with it.
